Ferrari Roma review. It's very pretty but what's it like on a 600 mile trip to Cornwall?

I had the Ferrari Roma in to review a few months ago but the weather was horrible at the time and it really compromised the review. What I really wanted to do was to take it on a road-trip and, fortunately, Ferrari said yes so we set off for the Idle Rocks Hotel in St. Mawes in Cornwall, to see what the Roma is like on a proper road-trip. idlerocks.com/

It's a clever strategy by ferrari though, they know that the potential owner looking on KZbin is likely to be a bit like uncle Harry, so will therefore value his opinion more than say a schmee who won't be on the normal 45 to 70 year olds (the demographic who can afford such a car!) Radar

I agree with Harry's assessment that a high-revving NA v8 is better suited to the car, even if it ends up being slower. The infotainment is ridiculous in this day and age. They should be collaborating with google on basically a ferrari style reskin of their new automotive platform, while ensuring their hardware is sleek and with small bezels. I also agree that the controls on the steering wheel are stupid, theyre usually available on cheap cars because they don't want to develop/manufacture proper switchgear, it also complicates assembly. In short I fully agree with Harry's assessment, the car in terms of performance is an amazing feat of engineering, however, it isn't what I would expect/want from a ferrari grand tourer, while the body screams elegant grand tourer more than any of ferrari's grand touring design for decades imo

Liked the comment re: St Mawes back lane: 'You can't get a car down there' When I lived in Cornwall (stone's-throw from King Harry Ferry 79 -82) I had a '72 Clan Crusader bought from Roseland Motors, St Just in Roseland (St Mawes). So that St Mawes town back lane was just made for it - (Clan's wheel track is probably around 5 foot). Still have a Clan today but it's a bit more tweaked now with a full race engine, 9000rpm, providing a modest 190 bhp per ton through a close ratio tranny. Perfect for all Cornish roads within the legal limit (plus Swaledale where I currently live), in that you don't have to pull over for on-coming SUVs. That said, it's not going to be as relaxing as your Roma on the Motorway given 5500 rpm in top @ 70 mph. And I guess the Clan wouldn't be your cup of tea anyway Harry, given it's a tad ugly and the cabin is optimised for those around Colin Chapman's height - although 'tis true one or two 6+ footers have owned them, and still do. Love everyone of you videos!

I thought you might have touched on the rear seat capacity given you have grandkids, and they are selling point for this Ferrari. Also would like to hear how you rate it against Db11 / DBS / Conti GT. Otherwise your usual great review, thanks.

Great video! Interesting trip, I took a holiday in Cornwall recently, really lovely place but I also gasped at the price of entering Lands End. Liked Tate St Ives but would have liked some classical art in there as well as modern. Good that you made the point on the boot access and rain, as I was also going to ask if the relatively thin boot access (about 60% f the width of the car?) meant it was restricted to just soft luggage? Re the exhaust, do you think modern cars are compromised by every road tester wanting something "loud" that can be made even louder when you open the valves? I like your point that a Ferrari sound should be lovely and sing, not be a TVR clone with a badge. Before your test I would have said that I liked the Roma (gorgeous design). But with a base price of £250K and loaded close to £300k, it's twice the price of a Porsche 911 Turbo S. Post this test, I know I made the right decision to stick with the Porsche - Good Luck!

The sound has no way to be like the old Ferraris with the new rules! The engine is amazing but the sound if you want more , just put a Novitec exhaust! I absolutely love the Roma! I did a test drive few months ago, i really want this car in the near future!

Interesting on the Fuel Consumption at 20mpg, I was hoping for more. My 1988 Ferrari Mondial 3.2 2+2 Coupe averages 19mpg on a mixed fast/slow trip, not so fast as the Roma, but not hanging about either! The Mondial was designed to take 2 adults & 2 children or more luggage across a continent, and on long drives works very well! No traction control worries. Maybe a little noisier sometimes but ok, no power steering but it lightens up at speed, & it’s a manual gearshift which makes it a better choice! I recently drove the Portofino M from Graypaul & found it almost too easy to drive in an uninvolving way. My Mondial has a working sunroof so for an open top experience is similar to the Portofino, which felt cramped! I can’t see any particular improvement over my car, except maybe long-term reliability although my car has managed 1350 miles in 2 months with no issues. Cost would impact my buying decision with the Roma or Portofino M costing circa say £280,000 with some options. My car cost £31,000 & is now worth a little more at £35,000. I think I’ll stick to mine for now!

Very good point from Harry about having too much torque and power. Not so long ago 500bhp was seen as an insane amout of power, and now it seems almost routine. I have 590lb/ft or 800nm in my tuned soft top Merc, and it arrives at ~2000rpm, due to the pair of small turbos kicking in at low revs. Just a little too much throttle, and the rear wheels spin. Undriveable in the wet. Fitting Mich PS4s helped...

It sounds like a very gruff large capacity 4-cylinder engine with the flat plane crank, I think a crossplane would suit this type of car better tbh. Great review as always though.

Yes, never really liked Ferrari V8s with their flat cranks, they just sound like two 4-bangers fighting for who is the loudest (which is what they are really). But it's different strokes for different folks isn't it. Good engineering reasons to use flat plane of course. But a less ordinary sound would be nice.
