The Lancia Thema 8:32 was so named because it had a 3.0litre Ferrari V8 in its nose. It was also the car Enzo Ferrari chose to be chauffeured around in. After living with it for a few weeks, I can see why..

Harry, I had three Thema Turbos in the mid to late 90s. The last 2 were the later LS models which I believe were quicker to 60 than the 8.32. Amazing cars that I drove about 40,000 a year in. The turbo was all lag and then hold on for your life. One day I was working at Heinz in West London and what do I see in the guest parking lot but an Italian registered 8.32 so I parked next to it. When I came back to my car at the end of the day there was a business card with a 'nice car' note on it. It was the chair of Heinz Europe. Great cars.

Well to be fair, that V8 engine was Lancia's to start with. The Ferrari V8 in fact comes from the V8 that Vittorio Jano originally developed for Lancia F1 and sports cars back in the fifties. After Ascari's death, and Lancia subsequent withdrawal from all racing activities, all their stuff was passed to Ferrari, V8 included. Of course Ferrari upgraded and further developed the engine, but it wasn't theirs at its origin ;) so you could say that with the Thema it came back home

Cool bit of information. Thx for that. - The car reminds me my youth time. My friend Paulo bought one when he was 19 and just had his license for a few month. He scratched all of his money together (which was about 10.000 DM at that time - roughly 5000 Euros converted). It was a beautiful car and we all admired it - but unfortunatly just for 2 weeks. He needed to maintain the engine and some other stuff (Plugs, Filters, etc.) and as he was still broke after buying his car he needed to sell it to the repair shop it was getting fixed. - That was a sad day but I will always remember the time we had with that special and for us very expensive car.

I'm from 2004, and i know everything about lancia, I say that just to tell you that there are young people that are passionate about real cars manufacturers that are now petty much dead now, like lancia or alfa. My dad had an untegrale evo, my uncle an evo 2, while my other two uncles had a 155 silverstone and a quattroporte. They used to park them all together in front of their business and there was always a big crowd, trying to look inside the cabin through the windows

Not all younger people are all about Skylines and Supras! Currently looking at picking up a Sprint as there's a really tasty early one for sale nearby with a wonderful little boxer and one of my neighbours has a genuine Delta Integral. You just can't beat an Italian for that wonderful feel. Mine have been fairly modern cars, because I was young and couldn't afford to maintain an older example, but they're getting older now I'm more established at 25. A Lancia would be a dream, I'd love a Fulvia, but they're a little outside my budget and very hard to find in my country (we're almost completely Jap imports) but one day

Where i live is not a very nice area but...when i was a kid a guy up the road from me had one of these sitting in the corner of his garden, me being quite the car buff when i was younger knew instantly what it was because of the rectangular indentation on the bootlid...wasnt badged. I used to brag to my mates that it had a Ferrari engine but theyd give me stick telling me i didnt know what i was on about and being stupid, the only person who could confirm this was the owner but he wasnt easy to pin down to chat to. Anyway for months i used to brag about the guy up the road with the Ferrari engined Lancia and took the stick my mates dished out until one day the owner was in the garden and i was dared to confirm what i already knew, so myself and my mates went over and with some urging...i was a shy kid lol...i asked him about his car, too my relief he confirmed my much derided theory and delighted in showing us around it and starting it up to let us hear that beautiful engine sound. Sadly he left it to rot in the corner, i never saw it move, he knew what he had and didnt want to let it go. Unfortunately he died about 10yrs ago, his house and all his possesions were sold, i was there when it was put onto a low loader and carried away, part of my childhood disappeared that day and i'll never forget that car mostly because it helped me finally get one over my mates lol, thanks for finding and showing it Harry, brought back a lot of good memories😊👍

What happened to Lancia? Motoring journalists always slated them and always said why would anyone buy one when they could have a beemer or merc! I remember this car and remember all the Italian cars of the time. Because of motoring journalists they were almost worthless before they were even sold. Don’t get me wrong, they all enthused about how they drove but then came the caveats by the dozen and it scared people off, that of course and the rust issue which by the time this came out was more a myth than actual but it was only ten years previously that one could see Alfa Suds new with rust and people did not forget. Thankfully that left folks like me with great driving cheap cars which were so much more fun than anything else at the time! Great review of a great car Harry, this was a poster car for me back in the day.

Cars just don’t have the same cozy appeal of soft, comfortable relaxing luxury. Everyone is hell bent on sporty dynamics and far too much unnecessary tech. The 8.32 is totally under the drivers control with no nanny safety crap. Rather ironically I can also pretty much guarantee you wont see many current cars lasting as long as the Lancia as ruinous electrical failures will have long finished them off

Fantastic review from Harry; love the more obscure cars that you don't normally get to see. That rear spoiler is mad! The E38 BMW 7 Series had rear headrests (on higher specced models) that would automatically electrically raise when the respective seat belt was fastened, then lower again as soon as the belt was unbuckled.

Well said Sir! Superb choices but who would be brave enough to own the Mk 4 Maserati Four-Door? They look great though, even today. On the Alfa, have owned several smaller sallons but didn't take the chance to buy a 164 Q4 for 1500 quid in the mid 2000s...was low mileage too....think I had two 33s and a 145 (all Cloverleaf) at the time so passed on it. A friend of mine and his brother had 2 8.32s between them until 4-5 years ago when they sold them. I think they are worth quite a bit more now. Love that spoiler - it was operated by one of the switchgear arms.

The Thema was very rare in SA but I managed to own 2. First was the 8v non-turbo which was very under-powered. Then when I saw an I.E. 16v Turbo I jumped at it. The Turbo is not as special as the 8:32 but it is almost as quick, and a lot cheaper to run. One of the most exclusive cars I've owned, and a lot better than most critics seem to say it is. Fast cruiser and the ex used to moan about the speed until she used it one night and phoned to say she was doing 180 down the motorway and couldn't feel it.

I always had a fascination for this car. When I was a young lad I had a car magazine with the test drive of this model and I fell in love with it first time I saw it. Amazingly, they're super cheap to buy. Under 20 grand buys a great low mileage model. I imagine that maintaining one is the costliest part. Lancias aren't know for their reliability, especially having specific Ferrari parts.

No comparison at all, the 8.32 is a nice and pleasant car overall but when you try to push a little bit its limits come out very soon being really nose eavy: is just not done for that. While the Lotus Omega is much more balanced, way faster and overall just a better drivers car

Lovely car! What an effort to fit a cross plane crankshaft. Worth it for the noise alone, but also smoother than a flat plane. Looking forward to a video from that super saloon meet!
@DoctorDARKSIDE
@DoctorDARKSIDE 5 жыл бұрын
The V8 in the 8:32 doesn't have the characteristic high-pitched engine note of the 308/Mondial because the crankshaft was modified from flat-plane to 90-degree resulting in different firing order and a more muscle-car tone - legend says that this was done to differentiate the 8:32 from the typical Ferrari V8 sound, but some facts also point at a more refined engine balance and space constraints in the engine bay.
@juststeve5542
@juststeve5542 5 жыл бұрын
The engine was retuned from the original to have a more useful power curve for a family saloon. Hence it's more refined than Harry expected. You drive it round in a normal rev range, you don't need to ring its neck to get the most performance out of it. I don't think changing the crank timing will have much impact on the external size, the big ends are still going to go round in the same circle ;-)
