Hi All, How do these two iconic 80's sportscars stack up against each other? Which would you have?? Let us know in the comments section!

It's that sound, right? But I really like the 3.2 sound too. The looks and styling are great on the Ferrari too... It really is an amazing car :)

The Porsche (for me) sounds a little similar to my BMW's I used to drive hard. I now have an 86 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce, modified a bit, and a 74 TR6. I totally get what you are saying about the 308 vs the Porsche, but with a twist. The TR6 has a great sound, but muted compared to the Alfa. The Alfa is like a go cart due to the chassis stiffener and Koni's, and is way easier to drive in normal traffic. *Read constant road construction in Oregeon* Now, my input is...buy both! If you can. If not, the Ferrari will be the win. You need to love and be involved at a deeper level for the 308, which will bring more satisfaction.

Tough choice! I longed after both cars as a young boy in the 80's. My fathers friend had a late 80's 328 GTB which was super cool. A mentor friend of mine has a very unique red 400i with all the cats removed. It is awesome grand touring car with amazingly comfortable, deep, thick leather seats and the interior of that car smells like Heaven! Amazing sounds come from that car. I am forever "Porsche 911" at heart, however I have quite a few other F cars I LOVE.... 288 GTO, 250 GTB, Dino GT, 575 M, 599 GTO. I love both of your cars and cannot make a choice either way, so if forced to choose, I would have to take both! The 308 QV is the classic icon of the era next to the Testarossa, and ANY Classic Carrera (especially in white) is just the perfect all around package!
@HeidiandFranny6 жыл бұрын
The thing about the 308 is that they made so many of them (a drop in the bucket compared to the 911 though), but if they had only made 1000, or 500 it would be worth so much more. It has everything to be a true classic. But,... that 3.2 Carrera, huh? f

I love both but I have to go with the Porsche. Porsche has a very special place in my heart. It all started with seeing a 930 turbo that was completely black. I was 5yrs then and I still remember the excitement of seeing the car race past my parents Land Rover. Ever since that day I promised I would have one

Having owned both cars you reviewed, for me the 308 was a far more exciting car. It was slow....but it felt fast. One thing you didn't mention was the beautiful noise the gearbox makes when you shift the gear. I always loved the gearbox whine in my 308s . When I went to the Testarossa, I was disappointed that it was gone.

It would be the Ferrari for me hands down. I don't have 308 as I couldn't find a good one at the time, so I settled for a 1989 382GTS. Fantastic car. I've had it now for 12 years and it hasn't missed a beat even though I thrash it every time I get in it. As for timing belts every five years, I think that's a myth. I have ten years on mine and am about to change them now. As long as you keep an eye on them that they don't get oil on them, they are all good. ( also besides time, it a distance thing too ). I just laugh when people say they are unreliable when they have never owned one let alone ever driven one. Great video. But for me, it's the Ferrari every time.

Hey A superb review on my two fave 80s cars. 308 (Magnum pi) is so sexy, and even the 328. I would never want to own one though, just drive one. As for the 911, well, you summed up the 915 perfectly. The only reason why so many have lost their 2nd gear syncro mesh is because those folk think they can change gear in the same way they would in their VW Golf. For me it has to be the 'No man's land' Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera, and the 915 series too. Love your very informative channel

That 0-60 on the Ferrari is off by 1.2 seconds. It's 5.5 seconds. One way you know your specs are wrong is looking at the power to weight ratio. If two cars have nearly identical weight and torque, the one with the higher hp will always be faster.

Great review of the cars that I wanted when I was in high school and college. I drove a '85 911 and it's a different beast than my 997 and 911. I suspect that my modern 911s drove closer to the 308. I love that you point out that your Porsche "drivers weird" in high speed corning, most people don't understand this about the older 911s. I've seen a mid-80s 911 race car spin off a track on a high speed turn. I didn't fully understand why it went off the track until I drove my 997 on the same track. It was the scariest turn on the track, #10 on Summit Point Circuit track, but the most rewarding when you do it correctly. Thanks again for the review!!

I was in London during the 80s and the 911 was the choice of the city stockbroker boys. For me the, Ferrari was for the enthusiasts. Just sitting in one makes me feel like Marcello Mastrianni. Sadly I never had Monica Vitti as a passenger.

Anyone else feel like there was something so beautiful about the simplicity about the 80's? It was that perfect time period where cars looked like beautiful mechanical machines. They were simple as in they weren't decked out with too much technology, but also not something built out of the 1940's where most cars didn't have great shape and design. The 80's cars are amazing and give off a cool/independent vibe. Just a man, his car, and the road. No technology, not gimmicky gadgets or widgets, just his car, maybe a cassette player, and that's it.

There's one big difference between a Porsche and a Ferrari (I've owned several examples of both): the Porsche is actually a car! It will run reliably in practically any conditions, it won't need constant maintenance and it will reward you with good performance anytime you ask it to do so. With a Ferrari, even a modern one, there is ALWAYS something broken, something that doesn't work and even the fundamentals are always marginal (a/c, seat adjustment, etc.). A Porsche is like a ball peen hammer when it comes to reliability. Ferraris have that wonderful time - when they're actually running correctly. Otherwise, and most of the time, they're like Italian women: fun at times, but almost always a big pain in the neck.

The stereo in the Ferrari isn't aftermarket. What Ferrari used to do was they would wire everything and then let you pick the head unit as you bought it so you can pick different head units and that would be the factory stereo but they would wire all at Ferrari for you.

Well done comparison these two cars can be so polarizing with some people that it draws out irrational hatered. I don’t know how you could hate or trash talk either one. I unfortunately cannot afford to own both so for me it was always the Ferrari going as far back as when I was a kid even before the 308 came out and I was smitten by the Dino and the Boxer. Eventually I was able to get a 308, one of the still affordable Ferraris to this day and have loved every moment of it. But I don’t knock Porsche owners, we all share a common passion.

Great job!

Will do! Those roads are easy enough to get to, but a bit more up the canyons would be more suiting - I agree. And, it isn't completely fair... I really should have paired the 308 with an SC - same displacement and same injection. Still, the two are different enough that they really do sit well in the same garage. Like I said, we couldn't pick between them either!

Gidday Franny (and Heidi). I've only just found your channel tonight during some Covid-19 "home time", which is actually normal for me, lol! I'm a '65 kid, so grew up with Magnum PI, and have always wanted a red 308GTS (just ask my parents!). But I've always loved the VW Beetle curved shape of the older 911, and just adore the throaty sound of the flat-6 air cooled engine. As a pilot, I also have experienced that same growl of a big flat-6 up front, So I've a real dilemma in choosing... Back in late 80s I had a red Alfa 33QV boxer as my 308 stand-in, so know all too much about the Italian narrow offset pedals, weird steering angle and low seats, not to mention the terrible electrics, high revving engine coupled to a close range unreliable 5 speed gearbox. It was a costly expensive car, but it won me a wife back then! So I'd probably go for the Porsche 911 for that classy growl and the more upright seating, now that I'm much older. Would still love the 308 for weekends as they're such a head turner with the Italian flare and the "need for speed"! I love your content, your super knowledgeable commentary, and very pragmatic conclusions. Cheers down in from NZL

Or, I should say, that the cold oil is acting LIKE an extra fast synchro, and is stopping the gear from spinning quicker than the synchro wheel would when warm. I was a pro driver for 40 years, and drove non-synchro gear boxes, where you learn to mesh the gears manually. Otherwise, you won't complete a shift! Anyways, I think your driving segments are really good. The ability to put into words, about the character of a car...ain't exactly easy, and you do it well. I hope you are a fan of Harry's Garage !

You couldn't have found two better 80's cars to compare. In the mid-late 80's my uncle was importing cars for his dealership and personnel collection. I was lucky enough to drive his 512BB in some club races and I drove a BBI on the streets a few times. I only got to drive a 308 a few times and I actually liked it better than the 512. The 512 was faster, no doubt but it's even harder at low speeds. No power assist in the steering. Great at higher speeds, pain in the butt in a parking lot. The 308 wasn't nearly as bad. You can also see out better. Like I mentioned, my experience in the 308 was limited to a few lunch runs. They were long lunch runs because I was the owner's niece but I never even came close to ringing it out. It was a nimble little car and seemed fast enough. It was a Fiat X19 that grew up. :) It wasn't a chore to drive in some traffic and I think it would be a blast on a medium/high speed twisty road. Once I got over the novelty, OMG I am driving a Ferrari, that 512 was a chore to drive in traffic. Wrestling with the steering in a parking lot doesn't keep up the glamour or driving a Ferrari. The 512 was the flagship of Ferrari back then but, investment considerations aside, I would take a 308 over a 512 for a regular driver. That said, I would take a 911 over a 308 for a regular driver. I grew up driving buggies so I got used to rear engine. You can make the lopsided barbell feel to the handling argument but once you get used it, you can throw a 911 around like nothing else. I don't know if the 911 really is more rugged than the 308 but they do have that reputation and they do cost less to fix so I am not reluctant to put a 911 through it's paces. I think I would want to baby a 308. If I had more money, I just might go for a 308 for a regular driver. I would have to drive one again. Over time we tend to recall the good things about a car and forget the bad. Back to real life, I can afford a 911. I don't currently own one but I have had one in the past and I loved it. Even setting budget issues aside, I think the 911 is one of the greatest overall sports cars. The fact that they are still affordable is just a bonus.

Awesome comparison. I am crazy for the Pininfarina design, and the sound of that engine in the 308. But I am sold on Porsche. I just love the way they drive, and they have their own beautiful sounds. Thank you for the side by side of these classics.

I prefer the 308 over the Carrera from that era. The Ferrari is more forgiving when you push it.

Enjoyed watching. I used to own a 1977 911s and I really enjoyed driving it. But I've always loved the lines of the 308 ! These days I'd prefer the Ferrari qv. Nice you have a euro spec car.

Great car collection. Any reason why you prefer convertibles?

"Driving it with authority" I think is what we used to call an Italian tune up, drive the shit out it and blow the carbon out. Some cars really like to be driven hard! I love the sound of a flat plane crank V8, nothing sounds better and I am a bit of a Porsche fan boy. I own a 1986 944 turbo, I am not much of a 911 fan I must say (engine is in the wrong place) The 308 and my personal favorite the 288 GTO are simply amazing cars!!

Franny would you care to comment in a future video about the silly low profile tires on modern sports cars? That alone saves me the trouble on deciding wich era would i buy from in the event that i win the lotto lol. Not to mention the enjoyment you get from driving a manual transmission etc. Thanks.

OpticRacer21 silly low profile tires?? Low profile tires on performance cars benefit the car’s handling. Not silly.

It used to be (and may still be somewhat) that the rubber sidewall was a bit lighter than the rim so the rubber actually lowered the polar moment of inertia and the unsprung mass - both great things. They obviously give quite a bit more than a metal rim. The bigger sidewall also is more forgiving on our terrible roads. HP is another consideration... The power of today's modern cars demand more rigidity and they have become a bit of a fashion point. Great thought for a video!
