Enzo Ferrari told the story of the prancing horse logo just once: The horse was painted on the fuselage of the fighter plane of Francesco Baracca - a heroic airman of the first world war. In '23, I met count Enrico Baracca, the hero's father, and then his mother, countess Paulina, who said to me one day, 'Ferrari, put my son's prancing horse on your cars. It will bring you good luck'. The horse was, and still is, black, and I added the canary yellow background which is the colour of Modena.

It’s actually the same horse! The reason it was painted on the plane in the first place was because that pilot shot down a German plane from Stuttgart in World War One. He took the prancing horse from the plane he shot down as a souvenir.
@asensibleyoungman29784 жыл бұрын
This isn't true. The symbol isn't actually a horse, it's a mule. This is because Enzo Ferrari's favourite game was Buckaroo. So much so that he put a silhouette of the mule on his badge. The early versions had buckets and spades being kicked off by the mike but it was dropped as the badge had to be a foot long in order to accommodate all the equipment.

I have a 1989 Porsche 930 Turbo and owned a 1985 308 GTS QV for 10 years. Both cars look stunning and are a blast to drive. In my case the 930 drives circles around the 308 but this is not about going fast. For me it was about the driving experience, maintaining and working on them myself. The Ferrari 308GTSi was a much better driving car then the Porsche but being a little heavier then the Porsche not a s quick. well I used to own a 911 SC... and it was not cheap to maintain- cheaper than a Ferrari? probably yes- but not actually cheap. The problem is not the cars construction though- it is the parts and the workshops (at least in Germany). And in the last 10 years classic Porsches have become so overpriced that nobody is actually driving their car and they are mostly kept in storage and that is the only thing they are not good at...

From Wikipedia: The Prancing Horse used as part of Ferrari and Scuderia Ferrari logos and Ferrari symbol. Count Francesco Baracca (9 May 1888 - 19 June 1918) was Italy's top fighter ace of World War I. He was credited with 34 aerial victories. The emblem he wore side by side on his plane of a black horse prancing on its two rear hooves inspired Enzo Ferrari to use it on his racing car and later in his automotive company. Francesco Baracca's parents, who told Ferrari that their son used to paint a prancing horse on his airplane and suggested that if Ferrari applied the horse on his cars, he would have good luck. Now we know how Ferrari won so many races.

Great video. And as the former owner of a 308, I agree with the specialness of it...and still a stunningly beautiful car all these years later. Ironically, the only time my 308 broke down it was also the clutch cable. At the time the car was 14 years old and it was the original cable with just over 90,000 miles on it. I had organized my support system of mechanics ahead of time, so even though it broke at 5 pm on a Friday afternoon, I was back on the road by 11:30 am Saturday morning. Never had another issue with the car in the 3 years and 36,000 miles I owned/drove it. Having to be more frugal with my money these days, I recently bought the true sports car bargain of today, a 2001 Porsche 996 C4. 82,000 miles with a good service history, it is a pleasure to drive, and it gives me a wonderful analog experience. But if I could get back into a 308, I would. Preferably for me, a Dino 308 gt4...I love the little back seat as a catch all. Truly enjoying all your videos. Thanks.

I took the "long route", south to the Louisiana gulf coat then through the desert along the Mexican border all the way to the Pacific and then up Highway One to San Francisco. The car didn't skip a beat during the entire trip (i just lost the fuel filler cap somewhere in Alabama for which I then picked up a replacement at a classic Porsche specialist in Texas ). I don't think I would have attempted the same trip in a 308 since changing a clutch cable on a Ferrari in the middle of the night in the Arizona desert does not sound like an advisable thing to do.

Comparing a Ferrari 308 with a 911 is like eating a delicious Italian meal vs. a boring schwaebian noodlebroth. My 308, meticulously maintained, never let me down on any of my tours. Driven properly, warming it up over 30 minutes or 30 km, and not using it for picking up a loaf of bread 2 minutes away fro the house, has made it an absolute joy to drive. Knowing the 911 G Models very well, this is no comparison of style and emotion, it is comparing a thoroughbred with a mass production car. Any 308 maintained well, today is better than whetting left the factory, that also adds to the experience and reliability.

Having owned a few Ferrari's and a couple of 911's - Porsche all day, every day thanks. Ferrari is too fragile, attracts the wrong sort of attention (mid life crisis etc) and the old 911's are very classy now IMO. The Ferrari thing is for many a lifelong automotive dream but the journey to owning one is better than the arrival. After you get acclimatised to ownership, the liability that they are with huge parts costs and outside of enthusiasts, the cars unfortunately draw a very negative reaction from most unless they are 12 year old lads. That said, the Prancing Horse will always hold a special place in many petrolheads hearts (including mine) but take away the sound......and they're just not that good.

Never liked Porsche but i understand why people love them. I just dont like the shapes and they are not aggressive. Porsche is made by engineers and Ferrari and lambo are made by artists.
@jasonbungard74844 жыл бұрын
Porsche had great engineers, to be sure, but had great artistry as well. Porsche styled their own cars, never made a practice of farming out the coachwork to outside designers as Ferrari and Lamborghini did.

"It is just a clutch cable..." My experience with Ferrari is that it is always "just something." Though an intoxicating experience when all is well, my prediction is after a few more years you will be slowly worn down and want a reliable driver with very few real surprises. I'm sticking with my '88 911. Thanks for another great cars and coffee morning in my living room!

I'm on my third Ferrari. Started with a Mondial > F355 > 360. The Mondial was 23 when I bought it and it did have a useless fuse box. Sure the F355 had a few small issues but nothing to hold it back. 360 had been perfect. With cars now it is more how previous owners have kept them.

The 308 is pretty, but like most pretty things it'll leave you wanting more often than the stodgy looking SC. If you have to get somewhere, the SC would be the dependable choice. The SC is put together so well, it's like a tank. The 308 like many Ferrari's back in the day is not nearly as robust a chassis - pretty skin but quite ugly underneath.

My dream garage has one of each of those - each is the iconic shape of its marque. They evoke stronger emotion visually than their modern descendants.

i think the 930 3.3 turbo is prob the iconic shape of 911dom and the GTS will forever be the Magnum car, and better for it - as well as owning a couple of SCs I have driven a couple of 308s - one of them being GRP - the Ferrari makes you feel even more special - having said that, I had the 911s in my 20s and felt very proud looking back at the parked 911 (black with 3.3 turbo tail) - the door fit, feel and sound on closing is pretty special just by itself :) - GTS with Quad sports Ansa, panel out...just dribbling around town with that glorious over-run burble made you feel like a film star....errr, Magnum :)

One of my favourites has always been the Porsche 959 ,i remember Daily Thompson bought one back in the 80s,i just love how the suspension can bea adjusted and it goes over 190mph which is mental,and it looks beautiful,red or silver I'm not fussy.

This is so much more interesting, because it's coming from a car enthusiast and not a professional car reviewer. Not a single word felt biased in any way. It was your own personal views and truly honest opinions about these cars and I really appreciate that, as I'm sure a lot of your subscribers do also. And I also appreciate the fact that you don't beg for more subscriptions to get more views, although you deserve a lot more. As for the clutch cable breaking, that could as easily have happened on the Porsche. My personal preference between the two? The Influenzo, or course. More charm, better sound, better looks. All Porsches look alike to me. Thanks again for sharing this fine video.

Im loving the 308 now, it sounds great, you seem to be enjoying it more, and frankly nothing would be able to stop me choosing the 308 over the SC any day......So the clutch cable broke? Meh big deal.......it doesn't change what the 308 represents. Yes I have spent time in an SC, I drove around in a 1982 SC targa for a year, and its a good car, but it just does not offer the same driving experience the Ferrari does, don't get me wrong, the SC does a lot of things right, but it just doesn't do it for me......But hey you know people like different things and thats all good!! Great video, I love your candid approach to your experiences.

Great video and thoroughly enjoyed the comparison. Out if the two, my choice would be the 308. Its a little sexier than the SC. It think it grabs the eye better. I also enjoyed the sound from the 308. I'm an ex-pat living in Melbourne and have recently bought a Mazda RX8 as a toy. I really enjoy driving it and it puts a smile on my face every time I get behind the wheel. You did a great job with your video and thanks for posting!

You can easily modify the gearshift on a 915 Porsche gearbox with an aftermarket short-shift kit. It’s only a couple of hours’ easy DIY and transforms the gearshift completely. Cost of parts: around €150.

The Prancing Horse on the Ferrari was given to Enzo by Contessa Baracca in loving memory of her deceased son, a WW1 Pilot/Hero. The Baracca family has its roots in Stuttgart. These are the same horses. However, it’s Enzo that made the tail of the horse point upwards in stead of the original pointing downwards.

When I was about 12, my older sister's then husband had a Targa SC, in red, with the whale tail and tan leather interior. For a schoolboy in 1980 suburban Perth (W.Australia), it was like something from Mars. I can still smell that interior to this day.
