Ferret Health : Choosing a GOOD Vet

The first regular vet I went to didn't recognize adrenal disease and had never heard of the implant used to treat it, I found an exotic vet an hour away because there are none in my city, I recommend to always go to an exotic vet never a regular vet.

This has been a massive stopping point for me; I live in the North west of England and I’ve wanted ferrets for years, but the moment I mentioned them at my regular vets, I new I couldn’t take them there because she said “We don’t really get a lot of ferrets here, I guess they don’t need a lot of treatment” and I was just floored. I want to look for vets who know what they’re doing, but given that and my extended family’s disinterest in caring for them when we’re away has left me feeling that no matter what I want, I just am not in a position to own ferrets right now.

I recommend going to the same vet as guinea pigs go to since they are classed as exotic pets. I have the same problem but in the UK since we only have private breeders and rescues our ferrets don't have nearly as much health problems as Marshals due to their incorrect breeding. At a ferret rescue I know some of the ferrets haven't even been to the vets in their life. Ferrets are precious, I hope this helped.

@@poppyMia-rl8bl thank you, that does help a lot. I might discuss my options with my vets and see if they might either know of other places (they’ve helped us with emergency and specialist clinics) or if they’d be willing to learn how to treat ferrets.

I traveled with my ferrets and have found some great ones (and some not so great ones). Two of the top ones in the US are Avian & Exotic Animal Clinic, Indianapolis, IN and Carolina Veterinary Specialists, Huntersville, NC. Other vets go there to train with the ferret specialists at these. Other ones I have found are knowledgable and good with ferrets around the US are: 1）ACCESS Specialty Animal Hospital, Culver City, CA, 2) Texas Avian & Exotic Hospital, Grapevine, TX, 3) Summertree Animal & Bird Clinic, Dallas, TX, 4) Animal Medical Center of the Village, Houston, TX

Hey there, I agree one hundred percent about finding an emergency vet in advance, I learned from personal experience when my cockatiel got bitten by my dog. Thank goodness an emergency vet was nearby, and they were awesome, but sadly Geronimo had to be put down due to the wound very unlikely to heal. You're an awesome person Haley, keep up the good work!

Haley thank you from all your videos I've learned so much,I'm always doing research because I want the best for my 6 ferrets .still haven't found a ferret vet good enough or knowledgeable here in lake county Florida there vet they used to go to in Orlando and that's about 40 miles away now. But still I'm searching for that right vet.and thanks for talking about the ox bow ferret food .I'm slowly taking them off mazuri ferret food and starting them on ox bow.your so amazing.

Video idea: If you haven’t already you should make a video explaining ferret vision and the colors they can see!! The reason I’m bringing this up is because I got my ferret a yellow squeaky duck toy and she acts so confused on what’s making the sound, with her pink hedgehog toy she pounces on it and plays with it but the yellow one confuses her. (I hope that makes sense it’s hard to explain) Google says they see grey tones and like red the best. My ferrets cage bedding is mostly pink so i hope she can see it.

I just got my first Ferret kit myself, tried to find ones that were out on adoption here (Belgium) but no luck, so i bought one. As long as she get spayed before her first period, you should be fine with implants, but implants will cost you more in the long run. Here it's a mandatory thing to do when you keep ferrets and don't want to breed them. So i'd personally go for spaying. Hope this helps.

Hi there! Those are great channels to check out. As far as odor elimination goes, I'd recommend focusing on feeding a healthier diet and creating a good cage cleaning routine.
