Ferry an 1946 Aeronca Champ from Spanish Fork Utah to Mount Pleasant Texas. This is day 2 of a 3 days journey. I started at the Monticello airport ( U64) to the Kickapoo Downtown Airport in Wichita Falls Texas. This was a long day but I had a good time. #taildragger, #crosscountryflight #learntofly #lightsportaircraft #aviator

Thanks for taking us along on your flight. Scenery is amazing and I really enjoy the instruction you provide along with the great video. We miss not having our Champ anymore but flying along with you helps us reminisce about the good ole days.

So cool. When you came in on final, you flew right over my mom and dad’s house. They lived right off of Southwest Parkway near the airport. Show him enjoying this video.

My ol' stompin' grounds! OH. HOW I MISS NEW MEXICO. Aztec, Santa Fe, (it's always windy there) Tucumcari (That's NM too). The roadsigns on Route 66 said... Tucumcari Tonight. The "Land of Enchantment" is gorgeous! Hope your enjoying this great flight.

Dewey I love your ferry flight video's especially when the aeroplane you are delivering to its new owner is something challenging on sheer distances,I like your sensible always alert to changes planning,I could sense that crosswind pushing your airplane sideways ! the sheer vastness of your beautiful country with such stunning scenery as well,remote no tower airfields with only traffic radio,the little Champ looks lost on some of those wide runways. You certainly earn your money on these ferry flights no doubt about that,ferrying is not for everyone it needs the experience and knowledge that you have and the determination to succeed. As you were flying over those remote areas I was wondering how many crop dusters were down there at work ? and also remote airstrips too with some vintage airplanes in old barns and hangars. Thank you so much for allowing us the privalige of sharing your flight with us it is always a great honour sir.

Dewey, I landed at Tucumcari when bringing my Champ from Charlotte, NC to Carson City, NV a couple years ago. Windy in that area. It was gusting to 30 when I landed at Hereford, TX., the highest surface winds on my 24 fuel stops. Lucky for me, Hereford has a grass cross runway. Your skills are way beyond mine. I could barely Taxi it those winds at Hereford. I love watching your videos. You have an extra hour range over my stock 1946 7AC. I bet your useful load is lower than my 459 with that O200. Nice to have the extra power I bet.

@DeweyDavenport

That's a good question. Flying around in a champ doesn't allow much gear to be carried but for me I had a couple things that would hold me over for a couple hours. A couple layers of clothes, ski pants, heated coat and gloves, a couple bags of hand foods, fruits and veggies. Lighter, hand warmers, etc Then the normal Elt, com radio and cell phone which worked perfectly at 9000 feet. A number of folks knowing my flight path is also a advantage. What do you carry in your champ

In an airplane like the champ, what is your personal limit for crosswind on a landing?
@DeweyDavenport
@DeweyDavenport 3 жыл бұрын
Hmmm. I don't know.. I have landed in 20 plus knot crosswinds in a champ a time or two. I wouldn't recommend it. I would say a good X wind limit would be 10 knots or less. I have been flying Champs for over 25 years and I have done a lot of ride hauling in my biplanes over the years, so I keep pretty proficient.

How difficult is it to plan your cross countries having to stay away from class B and C air space since you don’t have a transponder? Very impressed
@DeweyDavenport
@DeweyDavenport 3 жыл бұрын
Matthew it hasn't been to difficult to plan around those airspaces. I haven't had to deal with a lot of complex airspace on my ferry flights. The good thing about the Champ is that it doesn't have a electric system in it so it does not require a transponder. Aircraft that are originally without electric systems can operate without a transponder and they can still operate under B,C airspace. That's another plus for a aircraft with no electric

Three tanks! What is the max gross weight of this bird? It's definitely not the 1220 lbs. of a standard 7AC...
@DeweyDavenport
@DeweyDavenport 3 жыл бұрын
The standard gross weight for a 7AC is 1320. That is what this Champ is. The useful load isn't that good but if your solo it doesn't matter to much.
@MemphisBBQ640
@MemphisBBQ640 3 жыл бұрын
@@DeweyDavenport I was under the impression that a Champ grossed out at 1220, but I'll defer to your knowledge of the subject. Thank you and safe flying!

Just curious, what was the cross wind component on those landing? I would be a bit twitchy flying in that kind of wind.
@DeweyDavenport
@DeweyDavenport 3 жыл бұрын
Im not sure what the cross component was on the landings. When I was doing the shorter legs I was planning on airport's that had runways favoring the winds.
