The "white trunk" is due to a white latex paint application used to prevent overheating of the bark or trunk blistering due to intense sun hitting the tree (usually in the Summer months). Once the tree grows broader, like most citrus, the need for painted trunks decreases. Best regards

Hello John, Instead of using chemical latex paint, in this video we used IV Organic 3-in-1 Plant Guard. The white formulation is now Registered Material For Use In Organic Agriculture. The brown and green color choices are still pending. Latex paint would never qualify for organic agriculture. You are correct, the larger the tree grows and establishes a canopy to cool the lower branches and tree trunks, the less risk the plant has to sunburn stress. You can use a weaker solution and then feed every time. Split the dose amongst all the waterings. Weaker can be better for nutrients, since water with a lot of dissolved solids can inhibit nutrient uptake.

I have a small 2 foot tall Washington naval organ.that's been out side since I've gotten it from homedope. I repotted it in a new potting mix.because the mix it was in at the store was water logged bad.and the soil smelled bad.ive recently noticed that a large majority of the leaves have start to drop off the tree.i have not been over watering.ive been letting it dry out between watering.its in a mix of spagum peat moss coconut coir pearllite and vermiculite and lava rock.

Hello I have a question. I inherited a couple of citrus trees with the new home I purchased last year. I was fortunate to enjoy some mandarins and tangerines back in November but unfortunately the recent winter storm froze all my grapefruit and now am wondering what do I do with the 80 or so left on the tree..I looked online and it said to juice but there are so many! Charles, The nursery that I bought my apple and plum trees told me to never fertilize after July because the tree needs to sleep for the winter. I do live in Missouri so that may be a reason. However, you are saying to do it in the fall, is that like October or November.

Hello Maryann Larsen, Thank you for the compliment! :-) Your semi dwarf citrus should grow about 6-12 feet, less in a pot than in-ground. The size of the pot depends on whether or not you have to bring the plant in for the winter; if you have freezing winter nights below 30 degrees F. A quality organic fertilizer should correct the yellowing... simply find one with a higher 1st number, which represents Nitrogen for greener leaves and more growth. For example, 5-4-3, for 5% nitrogen, 4% phosphorus (supports flowers and fruit), 3% potassium (for strong root system and disease resistance). Worm castings are great... or consider adding a few earthworms from your garden that will consume the organics you add and create a natural daily dose of worm castings! :-) Keep me posted on your growing successes! Thx i will try this combination of fertilizers. Been having issues with my orange trees. Last batch they dimpled up and I think the one before they were splitting open on the bottom! I live in between downtown L.A. and Ontario, Ca. Been about 92-95 avg summer temps so far with that one day at 117 here. Sweltering hot summer this year! I'm trying to fertilize a bit more due to the amount of watering. I normally water once a week in summer and with this heat wave they are doing ok, but I'm watering one day early instead of waiting for the 7 days so every 6 days and I think they are doing ok. At first I was watering too much, but now Im saturating very deep and less frequently. So far the green young oranges are looking perfect so far.

Hello Nina, Thank you for the compliment! :) Regarding getting rid of the ants, and because you are only going to use the product for a season, the few months your citrus are in bloom, I would recommend that you use a product such as Tanglefoot. You would have to create a dry bandage around the tree using something like burlap for a few inches around the tree trunk. You would then secure a few inches of plastic on top of the burlap. Then coat the plastic with Tanglefoot product. Nothing will be able to walk over the Tanglefoot product without getting stuck... hence no more ants in your citrus flowers. The reason I do not advise keeping the Tanglefoot bandage on the tree is that it can be constrictive as the tree trunk expands and grows wider... hence, remove the bandage with Tanglefoot every 3-4 months and repeat the process if necessary. Hello Alfred Sarkisyan, The best time for moving a tree is early spring and mid-fall (September/ October) to avoid the hottest months with the risk of transplant shock. I have many times moved trees around as I determine the best location for each tree as some tolerate full sun better than others.... and other tolerate more shade better than others. Most of the certified organic fertilizer on the market is derived from factory farmed Roundup Ready corn/soy/alfalfa fed livestock products such as, bone meal, blood meal, and feather meal, and manure. They also often use soy and alfalfa meal derived from Roundup ready soy and alfalfa. I would recommend blending your own fertilizer by buying Crab meal, Fish Bone Meal, Kelp Meal, bat guano, worm castings, and insect frass. Also, adding a couple inches of homemade compost around the tree is great too. Another Tip...Never buy liquid fertilizer. It is for suckers. You can buy the same thing in dry form and mix it with water and it will be a lot cheaper, last longer, and less chance it will go bad.

Hello Hamza Elarbi, The tree was installed about 1 year ago, and is approximately 4 years old. When I was taking a plant physiology course, part of the lab was to determine what happened when one of many essential element was left out of the distilled water we used for the hydroponic growth medium. The plants grew very well when all 15 were present. I don't think any of the compounds were organic according to many organic growers on youtube. Yet the plant grew with so much health even with trace amounts of elements. Is growing organic more of a fad or religion?

Hello Robert, I am glad that you have a science background... So you should understand this. Chemical products used for fertilizing, pest control, weed control, etc.... are synthetic man-made compounds that have half-lives that may remain in the soil for years, possibly decades, and are polluting your garden and our planet. Further, as the grower and consumer of your garden, you have a choice of growing your foods that are obtaining its nutrients from a chemical factory compared to a fish-based fertilizer (for example). Also, organic fertilizers are made from organic sources (living things) that are comprised of many (as much as 1/2) of the elements on the periodic table making more elements available to the soil biology and your plants.... Which leads to another point... Your feeding the soil biology which includes, but not limited to, earthworms, fungi, beneficial bacteria and nematodes that feed on the organics in the soil and return waste (manure from these small organisms) back into the soil to feed the plants.... that's something chemical fertilizers cannot do. I can go on for 10 more pages on this topic... But I hope you better understand that it's a lifestyle and health choice... Not a fad or religion. Charles :-)

Charles, I studied to be a scientist because I wanted to know what made things better. The soil is a very dynamic place. Did you know that the price of wheat has doubled in price in the last 70 years yet the price of other inputs like labor or fuel has increased 20 times. If farmers use you as an consultant, Wheat would be priced that much higher also. Most of the N and pesticides we apply to soil is half lived only in days or weeks and converted into other useful organic compounds, not in months, years, or even decades. You are just so lucky you have farmers that make it possible so you can express your standard of living.

I do not know what position you are referring to. Just look at the label on organic food at the store. It does not state that organic is better for health because there is truth in the advertising laws. It would be false to say so because organic is a preference not a safety issue as proven in countless scientific studies. I was reading a list with the half life of pesticides last week. I am sure you could find what it is. Most are short time because in the Modern world...long-term is not approved on the crop use label. There are many more human toxins exposure in a short walk in the woods than a walk through a corn field.

Hello Conrad Castillo, From the choices your presented, I would go with the 10-6-2 or 5-5-5... the other numbers are too high and lead me to believe that they are chemical-based, rather than organic. My recommendation would be to select and organic granular fertilizer (ingredients should be something like bone meal, kelp meal, feather meal, etc.) that will feed the soil biology and in turn product a more healthy and stable tree-- In contrast to the harmful effects of chemical-based fertilizers to the existing soil biology consisting of earthworms, beneficial bacteria, beneficial nematodes, beneficial fungi, etc.... all of which are consuming organics in the soil and returning more elements into the soil that benefit the plants and trees. Also, most avocado and citrus fertilizers have higher 1st and 3rd numbers, with lower middle numbers. You need to decide if the goal is growth or fruit? In the first year, I made sure my avocado had a lot of nitrogen (1st number) to encourage as much growth as possible in the first growing season. Now, I used a more balanced organic fertilizer. Thank you Charles, I had my avocados trees inside my greenhouse all winter, now I put them outside in a shaded area, next week I will move them to the full sun, then I will transplant to the ground. Hello Conrad Castillo, I generally feed my trees every first week of each month during the growing season... starting slow in the spring and fall... and most heavily in the summer (most active growing/ fruiting months). And I like to alternate with organic liquid feeds (such as fish and kelp) and organic granular feeds (which break down more slowly over 2-4 months). And I only apply 1/2-1/4 the recommended amounts so that I can keep feeding the plants each month as some are only applied every 3 months, and others every 2-3 weeks. In between I am mulching and composting and doing other things that continue offer elements the soil to benefit the soil biology which in turn benefit the trees! Keep me posted! Charles :-)

My avocados have been dropping a lot and I read not to rake underneath the tree. We have grass all around and the yardman cuts the grass every two weeks. Could that be bothering the roots? Also, we bought some organic fertilizer at Home Depot last week and I wasn't sure if I could fertilize while there was/were small fruit on the tree or if I missed my time to fertilize. They're between golf ball size and maybe lemon size. The tree has never been fertilized. It is about 5 years old.

If possible, there should be a ring several feet around the tree free of any ground cover and/ or lawn. The leaves should be left to decay back into the soil around the tree and your should add your organic granular fertilizer around the tree in the spring, summer and fall (not in winter when the plant metabolism is slowest). And yes, you can and should feed your tree when fruiting. Just be careful to not disturb the surface roots when mixing the fertilizer into the top 1/4 inch of soil. Hello Dinarska Divizija, Send me a picture to [e-mail] Here are some general tips: (1) Feed your citrus 3x per year with a granular organic fertilizer: spring, summer and fall. (2) Soak the root ball area, and then allow the tree do nearly (not completely) dry out between watering. That could mean 1x per 7-15 days Spring and Fall, 1-2x per week summer... and very little water in the Winter. (3) Prune your tree by at least 5-20% of last years growth each year, preferably late winter or just as the last chance of frost has passed.This will ensure that the root structure is strong to support the less heavy trunk, branches, leaves... and hopefully soon, some fruit! I hope these tips will help get your tree to produce soon!!! :-) Charles

The misconception about the word “chemical” is mind blowing. Please go back to your basic chemistry book. Everything is a chemical no matter the source. You can’t make nitrogen in a lab. It is sourced from somewhere on earth. Just because it doesn’t come from something sexy like “feathers” it doesn’t mean that it’s cancerous. Here is a simple google search, but understand that this applies to any other chemical in the world: Nitrogen is produced commercially almost exclusively from air, most commonly by the fractional distillation of liquid air. In this process, air is first cooled to a temperature below that of the boiling points of its major components, a temperature somewhat less than - 328°F (-200°C). The liquid air is then allowed to warm up, allowing the lower-boiling-point nitrogen to evaporate from the mixture first. Nitrogen gas escaping from the liquid air is then captured, cooled, and then liquefied once more.

Oil and gaz are necessary though. So it is not durable. Producing 1T of NH3 leads to the emission of 2T of CO2 equivalent. Also, a lot of nitrogen is made using natural gaz, usually from fossil sources...

In one case, the energy is taken out of the ground where it was stored for millions of years, and we burn this fuel causing net emissions in the atmosphere. In the other case, the organic matter releases the CO2 it had stored in the previous year if it was an annual crop, or during the few decades of its life if it was a tree... Whilst breaking down the organicmatter will release CO2 but a part will be stored in the soil, so if you manage your forest or your crops in a correct way, there should be no net emissions. Tree breaks down, tree grows up Oil or gaz breaks down, do we put oil or gaz back in the ground? No. As to the nitrogen in the atmosphere, what has it got to do with what I said? You should think before you speak. If you are just a little bit interested in the subject you can find the carbon footprint of synthetic fertilizers pretty easily.

The CO2 resulted from the production of NH3 can be easily recovered and even used as a much safer and environmental friendly refrigeration gas . It's not all that bad as you try to make it look like.

Organic: 1.(of food or farming methods) produced or involving production without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or other artificial chemicals. 2. Relating to or derived from living matter. The soil in that store bought bag would be ecologically dead, no worms or bugs or fungus. it'd be a dry bark and dry dead soil. If he were doing it organically he'd be sourcing worm castings and worm juice and worms, wood chips and compost, food waste and manure. And most importantly mycelium to allow the roots to source the nutrients the plant requires. Instead of that, this plant will be reliant on constant supply of store bought amendments and in need of a constant feed of synthetic chemicals. Like a meth addict. I suspect this guy is getting a kick back to promote this "brand" of monsanto organics.
