Great job Brandon on the research and explaining. I equate this to electronics where the name brands have always been more expensive yet the lower known brands or less marketed brands are actually great products when you look at their specs and performance

So something like vigoro is made by Scott's it's the exact same product just in a different bag with a different price point all fertilizers are the same don't matter what the price is the only difference is if they have an added ingredient which normally makes the cost higher like maybe if it has iron in it or maybe like a methotriazone also known as tenacity. Which may be used for Pacific applications such as seeding. You normally will get a better result with a more expensive one but if you're just feeding your lawn do you really have to spend all that money to get pretty close to the same results. The cheapest place you'll find fertilizer is going to be Menards or Walmart and the best time of year to buy it is in August or later when it all goes on sale and you buy it for next year.

I have bought the triple 10's and 16's and 15's for years, its all from the same mines and plants as Scotts. Then get a sack of potassium sulfate and add that in for veggie fertilization as you see fit. No better way outside of buying it in a dump truck load. 8-10-40 would be my target for tomatoes and such. And some manure topping. When I go down that fertilizer aisle in home depot, I just about get overloaded from all the crazy mixtures and claims.

Great research. Can you confirm that I can spread agricultural fertilisers that farmers use on my lawn and that these fertilisers are the exact same as the big brand big store and highly marketed products like Scott’s..Nitrogen is nitrogen is it not, the only difference is the % of the nitrogen in the bag and the form it is present, ie soluble or slow release.. Sorry about the long..question…you are providing a very important service.
@TurfCulture
@TurfCulture 2 жыл бұрын
The ingredients are all the same. If you go to and agricultural co-op they will sell you the exact same product that is sold to growers. They will usually have these products already packaged in smaller quantities for homeowners.

Thank you for all this info especially this season! Quick question tho, I just bought YM double dark. My soil test indicated that I was very low on iron so I thought this product was a good choice. I’ve read that iron oxide is not available for plant uptake above a pH of 6. My soil test said my pH was 7.2. Did I just waste my money on the double dark fert? It says it’s iron oxide
@TurfCulture
@TurfCulture 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I wouldn’t be overly concerned about low iron on your soil test, you can easily increase the ppm of Fe over time by incorporating chelated iron into your program or by using a foliar product (spray). Unfortunately you are correct, iron oxide is not plant available even with a pH below 6 it takes a very long time to do so. Just my two cents, the double dark label on the YM fertilizer is a tad gimmicky.

Cheaper fertilizers might have stuff that acidifies soil or has higher salt content as its cheaper than the purer fertilizers like ammonium nitrate is better than ammoniun sulfate, and muriate of potash has a lot of salt and chlorine and can burn plants, potassium sulfate does not.

I watch ferts both granular/ Liquids and soil amendments all year round. I have landed outstanding deep discounts on brand names as well as generic stuff. It all works good, it's the time you put into the lawn that makes the biggest difference IMO. Is it spring yet? 🤔

@codysmith3271

yep, ingredients are mostly all the same.. Another point worth considering to help differentiate these products is the particle size. Scotts and other in-house brands tend to have lower SGN than the ultra cheap stuff and I personally find a few bucks of value in having the product spread like a dream. Looking forward to a season of content from you :)

Walmart bags says plant fert, but doesn't mention lawn. Also application is 15 lb/1000sqft so takes 5 times the material as a 3 lb/1000sqft bag. Not so cheap then.
