I agree with all the comments below and would like to add one more bit of praise. This is, for me, how a quartet should be filmed. One camera , in the middle, so we can see all the players, all the time. I find it exasperating when the camera work is given to someone who thinks it's their job to make it more visually exciting, with about seven cameras and a change of angle every 10 seconds or so.

That's because they're too used to filming pop bands whose teenage audience has the attention span of hamsters.

Most composers would have milked this section for all it was worth. Beethoven just builds the tension and then leaves you wishing it had lasted longer. But he had shown his mastery, so he moved on.

@@johnvanalstine9645One of 262+ reasons why Beethoven is the greatest composer of all time. Most (romantic) composers when they stumble across a beautiful passage they composed would just make use of it to soothe their pride by repeating it 47 times to show that "look, this bs, i mean, this section you've just heard is composed by me me me and no one else". Beethoven is higher than that.

I love the balance. No one plus three or two plus two here. Exciting foursome and the fast tempos in the last movement particularly solved a lot of problems.

Just watched ten performances of the "harp" ending of the first movement with the concertante first violin passage work, and this is the best. So effortless, exacting, and exciting! Superb performance.

This is by far the best recording of op 74 available on KZbin, the performance everything on might wish. It is reminiscent in several ways of a recording by the Australian quartet many years ago. I have now listened to it several times.

In general, the recordings of a generation ago don't measure up to the standards of today's best players. But for me there's one exception -- the Guarneri Quartet's middle Beethoven, recorded in 1968, is still definitive for me. The playing is flawless, there's a great balance of crispness and lushness, and the tempos were just right -- lightning speed when Beethoven wanted it, but patient when the music calls for it. I think the first movement here is just a little too impatient -- they're going at 167 beats per minute and, though they articulate very well, some clarity is lost at that tempo. Right tempo is around 158. And they rush the rests. These are some of the greatest quarter rests Beethoven ever wrote and they need to be appreciated, not rushed. This is a really nice performance, the Danish are incredible technically, they are one of the great quartets in the world. But this performance is a little bit glib for my taste.

A bit too fast and too loud. They're playing for a big room, when the piece was written for a small room. At times they skim, not technically, but musically. Always remember that Beethoven is about reconciliation.
