I don’t believe you. You say that you found this song “recently,” 3 yrs ago when you were 66. Let say you were born around 1955. You would have been about 20 when this song was first released - when Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel went to the top of the charts. So don’t give us any rubbish that you don’t remember the song when it was first released. You were 20 yrs old then, not 20 months.

Saw him in '02 at a free festival as an angsty 16 year old, dressed in baggy jeans with a big chain and spikey nu-metal hair. I was just passing through, but he was playing Make Me Smile (a favourite in Dad's car when I was a little 'un) and did the same sort of crowd work. I wasn't angsty at that moment, it was fucking wonderful. I can't possibly ever feel bored of this song.

RIP Steve Harley. What a great song this was in the early 1970s. Truly wonderful. But what I didn’t know then, although have since learned, was that Steve Harley didn’t exactly have the best of relationships with the other members of Cockney Rebel. Oh well, Steve has now gone and one must not speak ill of the dead.
@briansewart58853 ай бұрын
When you spend so much time with others, and the creative differences start, money is involved, other people are involved, gruelling schedules, illness, spotlight on everything publicly said... it is a melting pot for issues. many bands have had this problem. Some of my best friends were also assholes at times. some good still comes though, like this song. I read this song was kind of about Steve saying "well if it is so good out there, then go out there and prove it" anyway the song Rocks, and has an awesome solo.

@@DougieL I agree that version is truer to the recording (and probably better on technical aspects including his singing, his voice is much smoother there), and those backing singers are lovely. That guitar solo is great as well. But this has touches of magic I can't explain, the pacing, that organ in the climax, this guitar solo is flawed, but man does it climax beautifully.
