Great video and information. What if your OF-1400 template guide plate isn’t truly centered? Mine is off by 1/8”. There doesn’t seem to be a way to fix it.

I have the exact same problem and there is no adjustment according to Festool. My $100 Porter Cable is fully adjustable so I end up using it. How can I justify $1000 for a Domino now??

great video, to summarise at12:36 you are saying this centering pin is making the collet (the motor shaft) coaxial to the templite guide, so the 'designed in ' space is the same all over

my 1400 template guide is not centered, no way to adjust it.....all my other routers can be adjusted
@jeffdeluca1153 Жыл бұрын
See my comment above. Same problem here. How hard would it be to build a little adjustment in as their mfg is NOT accurate enough as this is a recurring problem on various threads and Festool seems not to care

Well almost. My OF1400, with the snap in guide and a set of Porter able bushings ARE NOT CENTERED. And there's no adjustment. Festool Corp customer service suggested I "gerry rig" it and offered no support. Something is out of concentricity on my $700 router and no support.🤔

What if you want to use a bottom bearing bit but don't have a vac sys? I'd love to have one but they don't appear to be available any more. Do you just have a sacrificial base?

Where is a good place to buy metric router bits in the US? They seem few and far between.

Sure wish they would come back with that Vac System. I know its a little costly but I would think its worth it.

Love it! Question though.. when do you use a template guide over using a template router bit. You know the ones with bearings on the top or bottom.. I usually use those with my of1400. But have never used a template guide.

The Pilot Bearing on the top or bottom of a router bit is designed to be used with a Template and or Pattern to guide the router bit along the template or pattern. These are independent of the Guide bushing aka Porter Cable Template Guide Bushings Two piece system that are also used to follow along or guide the router and bit around the template or pattern. Hence why Sedge goes over in His discussion of setting up a template at the 8:50 ish time frame. At 20:20 time mark Sedge talks about using a Pilot Bearing bit instead of a guide bushing. In essence Guide Bushings came first and as technology advanced Piloted bearings were installed directly to the router bit eliminating or reducing the usage of the two piece guide bushing system. In my opinion a piloted bearing router bit should never be used with a Guide bushing setup. There is a proper application of router bits to guide bushings and usage of piloted bearing router bits. I use both as I have jigs that are designed to use Template Guide Bushings and I would never for the safety of myself or anyone working with me use a piloted bearing router bit in that application. Just as you can use various sized of template guide bushings with router bits , you can also on some piloted bearing router bits change the piloted bearing to a larger or smaller bearing but only if the bit design allows it. I also own the OF 1400 and use both the PC style Guide Bushing system and the Piloted Bearing router bit to do various projects as the application calls for it. Be safe and have years of joyful wood working.

I always think of routing direction this way. If I’m standing at a router table using a fence, it’s right to left feed direction. If the router is inverted(hand held) it’s opposite, unless you are approaching grain that is facing toward you.. then lightly climb route the opposite way (R to L). And then finish the pass

What is your recommendation for a good source of metric router bits in the US? I know you guys of and on sell a few here, but I have been trying to buy metric slot cutters, etc. and can’t find much. I do everything I can in metric. And am even annoyed my depths on my festoons track saw are imperial because I bought it a few months too late for metric, but what is a good source I can order or pick up metric router bits in California?

You did not show the template guide adapter for US standard guides.

Bullshit. My of1400 is not centered to the collet, there’s a 1/16” offset. I had to go buy a Bosch 1617 to rout my dovetails. Festool doesn’t give any mechanism to make a centering adjustment on this router.

Do you recommend the 36mm hose on everything or just routers. I have the FT 1400 and I use it for cutting out bow ties, The problem for me is that the guide system I have has the guide Bush with the ring that you remove for one cut. My router bits keep breaking and I watch my path of travel. Do you guys have a recommendation for bits for this type of work?

It's a shame Festool sponsored an entire video on the worst feature of the OF 1400. Based on my recent experience with the OF 1400, the comment at 10:30 is absolutely false. Not only were the guide plates NOT centered, they could not be centered and moved around while attached to the router base. This might not be a problem for projects that don't need accuracy, but it was impossible for me to cut acceptable dovetails with my Leigh D4R dovetail jig because the guide bushing adapter plate moves. I had to use my OF 1010 to cut the dovetails. This has been a known problem with the OF 1400 for at least ten years, maybe more, with no fix in sight. Big fail.

I just discovered this problem on my OF1400. Tried to explain this at one of the Festool Days events and the guy said he'd never heard of the issue. Tried to blame it on clamping and setup issues. If I plunge the router, raise, rotate router 180 degrees and replunge, I get approximately 0.5mm error.

Great video folks. Festool needs to come out with a Bluetooth controller that plugs into the wall and works with the current Bluetooth hose switch and batteries. I have two Festool vacuums and one is newer with the Bluetooth adapter on the hose and one without. It would be nice to have the ability to use the Bluetooth controller with the old one!
