I work in a prison. The drug problem in this country is everywhere, but very much in rural, economically depressed communities. Please be careful in those alleyways! Carry some pepper spray at a minimum. I'm also a chaplain/pastor. Your spiritual analysis of evil is spot on! Keep the faith!

There is something special about every boat and yours has its advantages for sure. The shallow draft, low fuel consumption, etc. But you're gonna definitely need to watch the weather when you hit the gulf, the atlantic, the Pamlico, Chesapeake and Great Lakes. But im here rooting for ya!

I'm gonna' try to meet him in the Chesapeake. I've got a LOT of boat work to do to make that happen and I'm fighting a couple of disabilities. But I sure want to meet up with him when he hits the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay then travels up to the C&D canal. (My great-great grandfather was one of the German emigres that dug the canal, his son became one of the pioneer (hard hat and canvas suit) divers and he was employed by the U.S. Government to work on the locks. I'm hoping Brenton will let me 'guide' him on that leg of his trip. I've accumulated a LOT of information about the Delaware and Chesapeake bays.

Going under bridges in my sailboats is is always 'weird' for me. The bridge span may be more than 150-feet over the water, but I'll be looking at the masts and thinking all along that we're gonna' hit the bottom of the bridge. (Part of is is my poor depth perception.)

Burlington and other towns like it must have thrived in the steamboat era and in the 20th century when towns like that might have had manufacturing plants, or many of them. That bridge that you were so worried to go under is the most famous railroad crossing of the Mississippi. It is a "swing" bridge. It pivots on its center so that barges can pass. It carries the BNSF Transcon line (Chicago to LA). And if you look closely you will notice that it has trains on the bottom and cars on the upper level.

two lines with carabiners on the end work great for the locks. they can hold you to the wall at bow and stern but slide with the elevation change. And with a fender clipped to them they will stay right at the waterline between wall and vessel.

Been looking for a pontoon boat that i could deconstruct then reconstruct as a catfish rig. But after watching, you have given me the shanty river boat bug and i don't believe this can be cured without building a shanty boat and starting on some great adventures. And let's be honest i can scratch the catfish fishing itch on a shanty boat while on adventures! Thank you for such insigful and heartfelt videos. Your love of this country and our great history and desire for our future to greatly improve is contagious. I believe with all my heart that if we want our communities, our states and our nation to turn around, it takes individuals to make the changes in their own lives showing others how its done by example. @backwatersandbackroads Rising Sun is most well know now for its casino, at least for the moment until it eventually closes and because we are in the smallest county in Indiana. Won't upset me when the casino closes it was bound to happen and never a long term solution for the tow . Used to be a farming town more than anything until the destruction of the tobacco market here in the US and most of your small farmers like us were forced out of small hill farms. But the town is amazing and I appreciate it more now than I did growing up.

A few years ago, I did the lesser Loop in a 13' rowing/sailing dingy. After drifting and rowing down the lower Mississippi R. starting at Caruthersville, MO, I did the Gulf ICW, Atlantic ICW, the Hudson R., the Erie Canal to Lake Erie and then a shorter route by portaging over to the Alleghany R. and then down the Ohio R. to where I started on the Mississippi R. I spent 9 months on the trip and camped on the river bank all but about 7 nights when I couldn't find a spot and slept in the boat instead. I was able to sail about 50% the route and rowed and drifted the other 50%

Nice section of river. I checked the Quimby's Cruising Guide. I was surprised that Fort Madison didn't have any kind of facilities for travelling recreational boats to dock. It's a significant sized town. It's a famous railroad town. Keokuk has several places for boaters to stop. The Keokuk Lock is the largest one on the Upper Mississippi and it's got a huge hydroelectric plant as part of the lock and damn complex. They have a 24 hour Web cam that has many regular followers and fans. Burlington looks kind of hollowed out. Its always kind of sad to see places like that when its obvious that at one time it had to be a prosperous and bustling town.

@@backwatersandbackroads I think it comes down to making contact that people want to see. It’s hard to capture the attention of people with so much to choose from. If you were a hot 20 year old girl I’m sure that would help. I guess that’s Wavy’s job.

Howdy! I'm always thrilled to hear from folks outside the US. I did a study aboard down there about 20 years ago now. Geelong, but I mostly just tooled around Tasmania in an old van. I got almost straight Fs! Lol ;)

I wonder if those Gangster Wannabe's were cooking meth. That can be a big problem is some small towns. I spent a lot of time in a small town with my grandparents as a kid and that is all that town is now. I'm glad you are thinking about posting two videos a week. I am digging this trip!

Wondering where the line "time out of mind" came from, I looked. The same poet who coined the phrase "burning the candle at both ends" I like it. Keep up the good work partner. You're making me think.

I borrowed it from Bob Dylan. I've always felt our perceptions of time make or break us. There's a book called "The Power of Now" that talks about this very difficult and fundamental topic. This world wants us never to alow down and contemplate why we're even here. Thanks for finding our little channel.

@@backwatersandbackroads In case you're interested, that phrase came from a poem called Dirge Without Music by Edna St Vincent Millay. It's kind of a depressing poem, I'm certain Bob Dylan used it in a more upbeat fashion. I noticed you mentioned time change day, I thought you'd be further along by now and you are. I'll be watching, still looking for another boat. Have fun.

Hi Daniel, I did an interview with a real lock master over on my back up channel. It's linked in the descriptions of my videos. The way the locks work is very interesting. Gravity. Engineering that is nothing short of genius. I would also consider living in the desert hell. Come to the midwest, we have plenty of room for now. Filling up with invaders fast

I think those concrete plants are grain silos, or at least the one by the train. Keokuk is pronounced keo-cut. At least when I lived in IA thats the way we said it lol. That abandoned house looks like a STS camp 🤣 I keep forgetting your videos are about a month behind the real weather date. It was warm then in Nov. Here in MO it is pretty warm to for December, still in the 50's . I don't get bored watching the river scenes i grew up on water activities and camped on a boat for weeks at a time on a lake and river. The sounds of waves and water splashing against boat is so relaxing. Merry CHRISTmas and can't wait to see next adventure. 👍♥️✌🇺🇸🙏🚤🛵
