As you are so much into German medieval metal, there is one band that is a „must“: In Extremo In Extremo (Latin for At the Edge; abbreviated InEx or IE) is a German Medieval metal band originating from Berlin. The band's musical style combines metal with Medieval traditional songs, blending the sound of the standard rock/metal instruments with historical instruments (such as bagpipes, harp, hurdy-gurdy and shawm). Versions of well-known traditional/Medieval ballads make up the main part of their repertoire, but the band has written an increasing share of original material in recent years. Their own material is written in German, whilst the traditional songs and cover songs are in a variety of languages. Here are some noteworthy songs by Feuerschwanz: "Ding", which is a cover of a song by a German Reggae/Dancehall band Sseeed, featuring the amazing Melissa Bonny from Ad Infinitum, "Das Elfte Gebot", the title track of the last album, and the cover of Sabaton's "Gott Mit Uns" and Rammstein's "Engel". Some of their older "classics" are "Metnotstand im Märchenland", "Auf Wiedersehen" (a gut wrenching farewell song to someone who passed away), and "Schubsetanz". Of this, they have recently released a black metal version, where they go all Dimmu Borgir on you. If you want to know more about Hans the guitarist, check out his channel, he's got an awesome solo album, did three covers of GoT music, and tons of other stuff like playthroughs where you can nerd out about all his gear. More bands to have a look at: Tanzwut, Corvus Corax, Schandmaul, Subway to Sally.

Man, you have got to come to wacken. A couple of years ago they integrated ther own "medieval metal village" wich is called the "Wackinger Village (obviously a pun on Wacken and Vikings)" in the festival, with street food, highland games, axe throwing, bow shooting and god knows what and of cours the "Wackinger Stage" where they usually have the smaller folk and medieval metal bands that did not make it onto the big stage.. and I can assure you, there are a ton. I guess you could spend the whole festival just there. As you probably might know, Germany has a very vibrant medieval market scene with a couple of traveling medieval markets. The evolved into medieval metal festivals, and they have a big crowd following them around. One of the bigger ones is the MPS (Mittelalterlich phantasie Spectaculum = medieval fantasy spectacle), the events where Saltatio Mortis grew big. So if you ever come to Germany (if not Wacken) check if there is something going on near by.

I'm echoing others here: Schubsetanz (maybe normal + black metal version as a double), Meister der Minne, Das Elfte Gebot, Malleus Maleficarum, Metfest... I'm glad you found them - and when it comes to "we not telling you", imagine spoiling all the fun!

I haven't checked more than a like a few dozen comments down whether someone mentioned it, but on the offchance it hasn't been - first YAY Tank, I'm so thrilled your learning German, you're going to love it, I'm sure, but also this song has another meaning from the title that is idiomatic and therefore not immediately obvious - Kampfzwerg doesn't only mean 'Battle Dwarf' which is the literal translation of course, but as an expression, we call someone a 'Kampfzwerg' whose bravado is bigger than their size, but usually they can also back it up. Like, a short guy who would have got knocked around on the playground, so he's learned how to use bigger people's weaknesses against them and fights dirty :) It can be used both affectionately and derogatory and I think it gives a whole nother layer to the song. Just leaving this here!

A Feuerschwanz song you could check out is "Schubsetanz". It is by no means one of their best, and it sounds a lot like a Saltatio Mortis song, BUT they also made a black metal version of this song, that they premiered on that live stream concert seen in the "Kampfzwerg" video, and that version is kick ass. As for other German folk/medieval bands, you cannot go wrong with In Extremo. I don't know many of their songs, as I only lately got into them, but they showed up in a German RPG called Gothic with their song "Herr Mannelig". And then there's Mr. Hurley und die Pulveraffen, but they sound like Alestorm without e-guitars and with German lyrics. Mr. Hurley are wild, their shows are amazing.

Hi Tank, Not sure if you'll ever do this, but heck I'll give it a shot. Couple years back Feuerschanz made a catchy little folky tune called Schubsetanz. It's basically about moshpitting, but disguising it as a "knight sport". And in 2021 they covered this song (yes, they covered their own song), but in BLACK METAL style (which is totally not something you'd expect from this band), including a new/another music video for it. :D It's really hilarious, and since you sometimes do double reactions, this is a great opportunity, I think. Whether you do the reaction or not, just keep doing what you do Tank. I love you :)

I absolutely love seeing you reacting to this kind of bands, it's simply great to see them getting some recognition from abroad. Kind of a shame that you can't understand the lyrics though, especially those from Feuerschwanz tend to be really funny... Since a lot of people are telling you react to more Saltatio Mortis, but don't seem to actually recomend any songs I thought i'd drop a few suggestions. Prometheus, Idol and Rattenfänger are all really cool and you can actually get live versions of these from Wacken 2017 (although the "live aus der Großen Freiheit" version of Idol is slightly better I'd say). This is a Band one absolutely has to see live, they simply thrive on interacting with their audience. I personally would really like to see you reacting to Totus Floreo ( also live versions from Wacken available), and see what you think of that... It is a bit outside of what you normally do, but since you enjoy the folky suff so much I think you could really like it.

that particular similarity to Rammstein you pointed out might have been because of the sentence 'Ich bin...' The Ich was pronounced very strongly and Rammstein has several songs that start phrases with 'ich' (meaning 'I' always followed by a verb), such as 'Ich will...' and many more.

Just watched the original and now your reaction, didn't know Kampfzwerg was your first Feuerschwanz reaction. For some reason the intro to this song made it sound a lot like Rammstein's "Deutschland" to me 😅 Thanks for sending me down this rabbit hole, man! idk if you saw my extended comment on the "Feuerschwanz - Ding" reaction video, I edited it right after you saw it and gave it a ❤️, but my recent dive into this genre is for a big part thanks to you, and it's so fun to see your reactions to these songs as I discover them as well 😁 I don't know if you've seen or heard Feuerschwanz's "Sex is Muss" song/video yet, it's very silly. I hope you kept working at your Duolingo German studies, so you understand more of these songs, especially the goofier ones 😁 And finally, I can recommend the band dArtagnan, the more serious, renaissance-themed other band of Feuerschwanz singer and bagpipe player Ben Metzner, their song "Farewell" featuring the beautiful Patty Gurdy has been stuck in my head for the past few days. Alternatively look for dArtagnan and Patty Gurdy's "Meine Liebste, Jolie", which is a mixture of live performance and music video, just like this Feuerschwanz video right here.

To add to the insanity here are the translations of their stage names Tank included in the Tank facts: Prinz R. Hodenherz III = Prince R. Testicleheart III Johanna von der Vögelweide is a play on Walter von der Vogelweide a medieval German poet whose name basically translates to "Walter from the bird field". Vögeln is a slang term for intercourse so her name translates to Johanna from the f**k field. Jarne Hodinsson plays on Scandinavian naming traditions where you might get Odinsson = son of Odin, but he of course is Hodinsson which again draws from Hoden, testicles. And Sir Lanzeflott is of course a take on Sir Lancelot, with flott meaning fast or swift and Lanze meaning lance and by now we all know what kind of swift lance they have had in mind with that...

Even though I'm German, I have to admit that I unfortunately can't say that much about bands like 'Feuerschwanz' and some of the ones already mentioned by others. It's not the kind of music I can listen to permanently. But since I work in retail and we still have a record department that likes to play this music, the songs of Feuerschwanz are not unfamiliar to me and have already made their way into my ears a few times. 'Kampfzwerg' is one of them and I kind of like the song. I also think the video is really well done. 🤘🏻 As far as Rammstein is concerned, I'm sure I'll make a lot of enemies with the following. But for me, Rammstein may have worked in their early days because they presented something new, put on a good show and acted cleverly in the media. Moreover, they have been successful worldwide, as you mentioned. Today people are used to it and it's not really fresh anymore. And with titles like 'Ich hasse Kinder' you might cause a short outcry in the media, but that doesn't have a long-term effect either. I'm not one of their fans and I don't know much about them, so maybe I'm not in a position to judge, but that's how I see it from a distance. 【 'Our rock never dies ever. Forever!' - Band-Maid 】🕊️

"Hodenherz" and Lanzeflott"! lol! song is about drinking lots of beer, going to battle and forge a lot of metal. I think you guessed it already. thank you for your reaction.

I was really supprised to see Feuerschwanz today since I just requested them the other day, great stuff, I love it :D I hope to see you react to three bands some day. The first is Grand Magus a swedish trio that evolved from Doom Metal to more Heavy Metal stuff and is really riff heavy and their guitarist and singer JB just has an amazing deep voice. Hammer of the North, Steel vs Steel or Frejas Choice would be the best videos to react to I think. Hammer of the North is the iconic song I discovered them through. They have a lot of nordic themes and it all feels very epic. The other one is The Sword, a band from texas, with a sound that I would describe as "old school". Maybe a little sabbath-y? A lot of great riffs too and just a good feeling. The Veil of Isis would be my go to video for them, Cloak of Feathers if it should be a little more mid-tempo. The last one is 3 Inches of Blood, a canadian band. High speed, dead notes, a singer in falsetto and screams packed in between, they are just packed with "oomph". Deadly Sinners should be the only songchoice here. Sadly, they disbanded by now. I would love to see you enjoy those three bands since they're a little lesser known (at least I think so) and kind of a hidden gem in my opinion. :)

Kampfzwerg is also used (at least by my colleagues) to describe a fiesty person of limited vertical expansion. As for the vocals in this song, it's much more In Extremo than Rammstein :D Oh, and just so you know, this band is one enormous double entendre

You could also like the band "Varg". German Band, Viking Metal with Black and Death Metal influences. Songs you could give a try: "Fara til Ranar" "793" "Dunkelheit" "Götterdämmerung" "Wolfszeit (2019 is a rerecorded version with better mixing and other lineup, they changed both guitarists, but vocalist and drummer stayed the same, 2007 is the original) Great video as always! also was my first time listening to Feuerschwanz, hyped for the coming reactions!

Love that riff! damn its catchy! The overall guitar tone is so freaking good! don't know what it is about it, but it fits so well with the folk instruments. You gotta check out their cover song "Ding" featuring Melissa Bonny. its so funny and awesome! :D Very underrated band in general! :)

You might also enjoy this German folk-rock group called dArtagnan. They sing in German with a very similar performance to this, and their most recent album has gone to a hard rock sound. I recommend "C'est la vie" and "Feuer & Flamme", plus "Farewell" has Patty Gurdy as a guest.

Check out Wolfheart, The Hunt. The singer plays all instruments and has also fronted a few other Finnish bands. You'll dig it man.

First off, LOVE the Beard Cable. It looked HR Geiger-esque... until I put my glasses on. Next : as my daughter taught me when she was in middle school orchestra, the main physical difference between a Fiddle and the Violin is the arc of the bridge... the violin tends to high a smaller radius (think 'neck') while the fiddle bridge is flatter, making it easier to grab three strings with the bow if you want. We only had one violin in our house, and my daughter would get PISSED if I left my fiddle bridge on it after the weekend... she'd open up the case at school, see it, and have to swap it out before her instructor caught on ! btw, Jan (who knits like a maniac and helps raise our Shetland Sheep) just leaned over my shoulder/pointed to your beard and said"Hei, I know that cable.... it's a 'Lots-a-Furs-Twist'.... just thought you should know. Your beard has a name, around here.

I`ve seen Feuerschwanz live twice and they rock. from the first time i just remembered "Mono Inc" was on stage right after them and so i recommend have a listen to them (mono inc - children of the dark) the sond Children of the dark turned into a bit of the theme of the dark scene (metal emo everything) here in germany

I really enjoyed your reaction and I was sure you would like Feuerschwanz. Sorry, that we weren´t more articulate of why we suggested them for such a long time. But I at least didn´t want to spoil the surprise. :-) One of my favourite releases last year! There are also a lot of really cool playthrough videos on the Napalm channel from them, and also a cool Guitar/Violin one for this song. (There is also a lot of cool gear to check out)

German medival metal bands huh ... *inhale* Feuerschwanz, Corvus Corax, Harpiye, Finterforst, In Extremo, Vogelfrey, Haggefugg, Leaves Eyes, Equlilibrium (the old stuff), Subway to Sally, Nachtgeschrei, Schandmaul, dArtangan, Versengold ... and many more. I'm just out of breath. There are a lot. Great reaction. Wish you lots of fun learning german. Btw. In this songs were alternate names for beer such as amber nectar and hop smoothie 😁
@Delta24143 жыл бұрын
Okay, In Extremo should be right up your alley then! Some of my personal favourites are songs like Frei zu sein, Sängerkrieg, Feuertaufe, Palästinalied, or Herr Mannelig.

On a side note ... "Kampfzwerg" is also a colloquial term for a small person who's pretty direct and outspoken and who do not shy away from confrontation with people way larger then them - mostly used for small women and most of the time meant in a teasing yet friendly way.
@robertdeelen66853 жыл бұрын
Kampfzwerg is also a german slang term, meaning a person on the smaller side (not necessarily people with dwarfism but just smaller than average) thats physically strong or has a fairly agressive character (not necessarily in a negativ way). It can be meant in an endearing AND/OR derogatory way. In this case, they are singing about actual dwarves and mining and drinking and stuff.

You should take a look at Feuerschwanz - Das Elfte Gebot (the title song from the current album). It combines really awesome music with a spectacular music video. Also check out Feuerschwanz - Ding (also from the current album). It's a cover from the 2006 version of this song from Seeed (another german band) and it features Melissa Bonny. The music video was shot at Bogenwald, a german LARP village.

It has been said a thousand times before, and it will be said a thousand times again: If you are into Medival Metal, there's NO way to ignore the German Big Two! In Extremo and Subway To Sally! Tank, go for it! Oh uuuhm Tank, I still want my WITHERFALL reaction!!!!!!

You could also try Dartagnan .. the lead singer is the gitarrist of Feuerschwanz .. songs like Farewell and Cèst la vie are quite new!

Good reaction, Tank! Digging it =) Thinking of the band Korpiklaani and their song "Wooden Pints" for a next step in your journey when it comes to folk rock/metal discovery: Korpiklaani "Wooden Pints" - fun song! Again, pounding on: Parasite Inc. "Once And For All" - melo-death band from Germany , and I know you love your melo-death ;) Warbringer "Silhouettes" - In my mind the best of the newer thrash metal bands out there Vreid - "Wild North West" - melodic black metal, Norwegian landscapes, great music and you get a look at their instruments too! =)

I jumped into the German language Metal Rabbit hole a few years ago. And Still falling and love the hell out of it. Feuerschwanz has landed in my all time top 20 bands, and i got 40 + years in. lol Hans Platz is a gifted guitarist. And the whole band is talented and creative as hell. Others have beat me to listing other bands, but I have not seen Nachtblut mentioned, And Schandmaul is great and has recorded with Tarja. As for other songs one of the really awesome things about Feuerschwanz is if they sing it, they will throw a creative video at it. Like 20 and up times, there whole career is documented. Enjoy!

There was once a German Band called Schweisser. Their Style was Like a Lot of Band in this time "NDH neue deutsche Härte". But there lead melody Instrument was a Saxophone instead a Guitar. They where Like Rammstein or Oomph but with Sax. One of my favourite Songs "immer im Kreis" or "willkommen im Club"
@kriegstenicht35023 жыл бұрын

Feuerschwanz moved more and more towards metal with recent albums. They wanted to keep it fresh and in an interview said "then we noticed Hans can actually play the guitar." or something along those lines. So they fully embraced the metal route.

I fucking love Feuerschwanz. Thank you for checking them out! They don't get a lot of attention, even in Germany since they make less serious/party music compared to other bands from the medieval/folk genre (Eluveitie, In Extremo, Saltatio Mortis and so on), but they are still great :) If you want to hear some more of their stuff, "Wir lieben Dudelsack" and "Metnotstand im Märchenland" are some of my favourite classics ;)

That kind of metal has a really, really long tradition in Germany, the first ones were Subway to Sally and In Extremo, both bands I listened to over 20 years ago. Did you already check out BardoMagno? It is very medieval and it is the other band of Nanowar of Steel's guitarrist Mohammed Abdul.

I knew Feuerschwanz from around 9 years ago, saw them a ton on a medival festival series called MPS and i found them funny although a little bit plump lyricwise back then. But it was also probably because I heard them perform multiple times a day. Now with the last 2 albums i really got back into their stuff, they sound more mature and heavier, and I really dig them. As for another song to review: please do the song that started in the outro: im Bauch des Wals. I probably could recommend every song on the new album tho😁

7:39 Those cauldrons had actual fires in them. Hauptmann just told that in a recent video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/q57RppiPbtB3gLs). He also said that even in the huge room they were in (Gebläsehalle Neunkirchen, part of a former ironworks) the smoke slowly filled the air and made breathing somewhat difficult ;-)
