Awesome discussion - I wish this channel had more views. We need general awareness around the work being done by evangelical/fundamentalist Christians to desecularize our schools. The news seems scared to really cover it, and I find more moderate/liberal Christians are unaware of the problem.

Thanks. I lived in Utah for 25 years. I love the Mormons. I was treated fairly for the most part even though I was of another faith and like their missionaries went door to door in this case trying to "cull" some of the from the flock. Thankful for my awakening. Religion is indeed as one of my former religious leader claimed in a 1935 convention key note speech, "A snare and a racket". :)

"How to Defeat Religion in 10 Easy Steps" is such a great book title! Intriguing indeed, and the steps outlined indeed will minimize religious impact on our society. The book title should have been the video title also, IMO.

8:00 That's it! I realized that what kept me from embracing religion-although I dabbled in it-was always my deep conviction that the world's inner workings are DISCOVERABLE. I could not think in terms or of entities that are not material, because such entities just wouldn't fit into reality the way I conceived of it. Thanks Prof. Cragun for making it so crystal-clear.

If it were not for the internet and quick access to information and access to remote large groups in smart phone forums, the deconstruction away from religion would very likely not happen or be very slow in growth. Access to information is the nemesis to religion.

Humanity is elevating past superstitions, mythology, fables that might feel comfortable, and past a tendency to other, of feeling threatened by difference.

In Ryan Cragun's FFRF interview, he said he doesn't believe in any deity/deities. It appears there are six possibilities as to who Jesus (Yeshua) of Nazareth of the first century CE/AD was/is: 1. Myth: He never existed. 2. Legend: He existed, but stories about a first-century man became embellished with retellings over the years, turning him into the God-man of the New Testament. 3. Prophet: A prophet of God who performed miracles, but was not God's son. 4. Liar: A first-century man who was sane, but lied to others about being God’s son. 5. Lunatic: A first-century man who was deluded/insane; he really thought he was God's son. 6. The Lord: A first-century man but also God incarnate (1 Timothy 3:16) In the 2005 book “Bono: In Conversation with Michka Assayas,” Bono, U2’s frontman, commented: “So what you’re left with is: either Christ was who He said He was, the Messiah, or a complete nutcase. I mean, we’re talking nutcase on the level of Charles Manson. This man was like some of the people we’ve been talking about earlier. This man was strapping himself to a bomb, and had ‘King of the Jews’ on his head, and, as they were putting him up on the Cross, was going: ‘OK, martyrdom, here we go. Bring on the pain! I can take it.' I’m not joking here. The idea that the entire course of civilization for over half of the globe could have its fate changed and turned upside-down by a nutcase, for me, that’s farfetched.”

#1 or #2 is much more plausible. Religion was made up to explain the unexplainable by primitive people. It continued as a means to control people in the first millennium and remains so today. Nothing farfetched about that.

🗣️🧠 FREETHOUGHT MATTERS FREETHOUGHT MATTERS FREETHOUGHT MATTERS BECAUSE FREETHOUGHT MATTERS AND FREETHOUGHT MATTERS CAUSE IT MATTERS MATTERS MATTERS .. BUT IF ITS CRITICAL OF US .. ITS COMPLETELY DISREGARDED AND IRRELEVANT.. MAKE A NOTE OF THAT FOR FUTURE REFERENCE.. BY THE WAY - FREETHOUGHT MATTERS BECAUSE FREETHOUGHT MATTERS.. BUT IF YOUR NAME IS BEAU WE GO BY THE PHILOSOPHY OF MIND OVER MATTER .. WE DONT MIND CAUSE YOU DONT MATTER.. HAVE A NICE DAY AND REMEMBER... FREETHOUGHT MATTERS....

Re: his last point about "regulated capitalism" being a way to chip away at religion. Jerry Coyne claims that as countries become better at insuring a safe and comfortable existence for their citizens, the less need they have for religion, and that data shows that such countries have higher levels of secularism and atheism in their populations. This would show that a secular social democracy is potent weapon against religion. Note that current Christian nationalism is not a fan of democracy. This I think, is not a coincidence. While I agree with Jerry Coyne, I also think that his cause and effect logic is not complete. It was also a result of the enlightenment making society more secular that caused everything to get better, which then caused people to leave religion. There is a feedback loop with secularism. More secularism will make things better which will lead to more secularism.

I would argue that from a marketing perspective something like "rationalists" or "Independent thinkers" makes more sense. Religious apologists like to attack based on the idea that you are identified based on what you lack rather than what you have.
