@@ffxivarchived at times I wish we would have same level of production for cutscenes in current XIV... But then I remember how it ran on contemporary hardware... (like... 1-2 fps on leviathan cutscene on a really good spec PC) and how game was designed... At least we get significant improvements nowadays.

1.0 looked good, real good, it was too good looking, at the time the game ran like shite because the graphics were too good (and the game was horribly optimized) but it was a real thing that the game had way too high graphics at the time so average PC couldnt run the game back then

It's so interesting to watch the evolution of the benchmarks. Especially the HS one?? The amount of spoilers was kind of insane haha. Its also nice to see they start having some "benchmark traditions" like showcasing the new jobs as your wol, the little crafter/gather get together, flying across the zones, and the pose at the end.

I was thinking the same thing about the HW benchmark! So much was included, compared to Dawntrail, we have nothing except two zones and a few mobs.

@@archaemily I was thinking about the EW one, notice how it's pretty much spoiling the whole Garlamald arc. When EW started you kind of assumed Imperials were going to be the big bad under Zenos, but in the benchmark we're fighting with them?!

OMG, I never saw the 1.0 benchmark so I never realised the opening cutscene on the boat in Endwalker is basically the opening of the first ever game benchmark. That is such a full circle beautiful touch.

The amount of custom animations done for the player character and translated into every different race must have been a lot of work for the devs! I had a blast imagining my fem midlander in place of yours. The fight with Zenos was crazy.

Wayback Machine can find you downloads for all except ARR and HW. Googling the arr benchmark can find you some reddit threads that have links to downloads to ARR and HW. Tried commenting this on another account but seems directly posting a link got me auto removed and blacklisted from commenting lol

Fascinating to see the 1.0 benchmark again after the DT one. You can tell how badly they dialed down the graphical fidelity in ARR and onward, how much they really wanted to have that cinematic MMO experience, it almost seems like a return to it with the new DT assets and shaders.

For ARR, there were in fact two benchmarks. The "Exploration" as seen in the video. And a separate "Character creation" benchmark. Both feature the same scenes, but the latter lets you create your character for said scenes, just like the later Benchmarks would. The Exploration benchmark meanwhile only features the default cat-boy Paladin. (this was before they made Derplander the default) Now for the luxury of having that character creator, the file-size of the ARR benchmark went up from 500 megs to a full 3 gigs.

I had no idea there were two versions, but thanks to you I now have a Comet version of the ARR bench. Thanks so much! Yoshi-P has announced that they are going to release a second version of the DT bench to address some issues, so when that happens I'll make an updated version of this video that includes the ARR bench with Comet as well as the new DT bench.

Wait am I tripping or is the 1.0 cutscene not the same as the scene from Endwalker on the boat to Old Sharlayan? Even the animation walking up the stairs to see that one special character (avoiding spoilers) looks very similar to me.

Having not played 1.0, seeing the benchmark made me realize just how far back they went for references in EW, and just how much of a parallel they were drawing between the beginning and end of the WoL’s journey. Amazing stuff

Ok... no wonder Heavensward was an award winner... the benchmark alone was BONKERS! (compared to ARR) Stormblood was VERY nice and cinematic too, but it probably made people expect a bit too much... hm... although, benchmarks are more like simulations of what a pc should be able to endure when there are plenty of players around. (I wished we had more lively towns though...) But god damn... Dark Knight getting 2 badass intros in 2 expansions. xDD And still no clue what omega was doing in the Endwalker benchmark... huh. (also how I missed that benchmark I do not know, must have had a mental blackout or so, but at least you can show me the pleasure of Zenos kicking Alisaie... she got him back later with a psychological screening that stripped him but well well...)

That wasnt Omega, that was Chi. It's a super rare boss fate that spawns in Ultima Thule. Beating it gets you the Level Checker mount (the TV thing)

it is, Endwalker had used this scene as a reference( i think) . Another curiosity, the rain of stars that appears in pos- shadowbringers happened in 1.0, but as vision of WoL instead of a public event( kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXWXZpirgLyCZ7c 1min13sec)

Just for show. 1.0 will never come back and there will never be a "WoW Classic" copy of it. Yoshi already answered such question with "Nightmare"^^

Unlike WoW, no one is nostalgic for 1.0 in the sense of "that was a good game, I wish I relive that again". At most you would have people taking a look for a while out of curiosity and returning to the modern version, not staying long term.There is maybe some of that nostalgia for Stormblood and Shadowbringers, but not 1.0.

I mean, technically, they could create it in todays ffxiv graphics if they wanted to. The choice not to has a lot to do with money.

@@Ameion Graphically, 1.0 actually looked pretty good. Too good, because that ended up contributing to poor performance and they wouldn't be able to maintain current cadence of updates while keeping that quality. I think they ended up optimizing it a bit later, and we have more powerful machines today as well.

@@miweneia Less generic and more archetype. Some of the earliest hyur designs are of Comet, and she was created as the female embodiment of the WoL alongside the original Meteor. So yeah, a lot of hyur designs are based off her. Go figure.

I can think of some much worse things they've added than flying. Flying is a mercy with how awful zones like Sea of Clouds were without it.

@farlado5459 Sea of clouds wouldn't be bad with bridges, I had a feeling someone wouldn't comment back with that zone. Flying eliminates the dangers and annoyance of aggro, which leads to the devs creating zones that dont have to be explored, which makes dungeons only viable through duty finder. Instead of cave, you can happen upon, etc, etc. Yoshi P said he played WoW and other MMO that have great elements exploration and dungeon crawling, and yet instead of focusing on adding like those he put in flying, he made the whole zone useless.

@@Ameion I honestly don't think that I would blame flying for zones not being worth exploring. XIV simply hasn't created good *open-world* content, and that would be the case regardless of whether flying was or wasn't implemented. It would be wonderful to have more stuff in the open world, so that there isn't as much incentive to fly past everything in each zone, but just dropping flying and forcing everyone to walk through the empty expanses won't necessarily help anyone.
