In 2020, the Panda turned 40, and to mark the occasion, we look back at its intriguing past to see how the design changed through time.
Giorgetto Giugiaro created the first generation Panda I for Italdesign, which was released in 1980. The Roman goddess and patroness of travelers, Empanda, was honored with the name Panda.
The initial model had a four-cylinder, 903cc engine that produced 45 horsepower and a four-speed manual gearbox to transmit the power to the front wheels.
The Panda I cost GBP 2,860 in the UK upon launch. Four years later, Fiat unveiled the Panda 44 with a larger 965cc engine that produced three more horsepower, a 5-speed transmission, and a crawler function that was unique in the globe.

I kinda feel they will ruin it by making it overly complicated… My brother-in-law has a 2nd gen Panda 4x4 with literally no technology besides a very basic FM stereo and a CITY mode for super light steering. It's cheap, reliable, light and small, yet very practical. For a few kilometers through the city you really don't need any technology, maybe only central locking and electricly operated driver's window would be nice to have. It's also the perfect car to go XC skiing about 10 km from home, which we do very often. The 1.2 liter petrol engine takes very little time to warm up, but a BEV would be even better in that regard. I really wish there was an EV with (perhaps optional) 4x4 drivetrain, no unnecessary tech, something like 20 kWh battery and max. 100 hp (you really don't need more for this kind of car), dimesions about the same as the Panda II and a price tag for a new car of about €15,000. I would be among the first ones on the waiting list. The new electric Panda might in theory be one of few cars coming close to my requirements, but I think they'll put too much tech (you really don't need five driving modes, adaptive cruise control with auto-steering or even an infotainment screen with sat-nav, if the main purpose of the car is to get you 3 km to a shop and back), too powerful motor and too big a battery, that they won't be able to go low enough with the price.

With a Panda you go everywhere. Panda has never been comfortable or beautiful but extremely useful. - they say, I don't know if it's true, that it's the most stolen car. I hope for a bright future. 😜

Not impressed. I was looking for "cheap" and "simple" aka the first generation. Small ... but its not going to happen. Back to the 500e
