My wife's Fiat 500 is due for MOT soon
Sadly the number plate light on the OS stopped working, at first ... we thought it was the bulb - but after closer inspection, it turned out to be an issue with the holder
Sadly ... this is all one unit, built into the boot handle
Fiat wants £200 for a brand-new one
We weren't going to be defeated, Dad came to the rescue ... but how did he fix it?

Thnx Jon. I think I may have to do this. Bought a used Fiat, noticed clips missing, plate light warning on dash. Im hoping its just a light replacement and nit a soder patch like you had to do. I'll find out in a few days when my light arrives.

I once swapped out a reg plate bulb on a van, and the socket was so finnicky to fit in that if I could have charged £200 for the job I would have. That car has the pink tax band.

Are you certain the bunch of wires that flex every time the hatch opens & closes is in perfect order?

Yes :) - I am aware that is a 'weak spot' we did check those out but I didn't film that process

What model is the fiat 500 is it a 500 c or what? Also was u able to just get the bulb out with out taking off the trim. Fiat is telling me you have to replace the whole thing.

This it the Fiat 500 - standard metal roof and glass top - 2010. Fiat are right - you do normally have to replace the whole thing. We took it carefully to pieces as shown and fixed it ourselves for 15p instead of nearly £200

Does the earth go via the boot switch, so if it's gunky in the switch it stops the earth for the numberplate lights too?

I'd assume it was all connected yes

I have this exact same problem with my Fiat 500, boot, wiper and plate light are all not working properly😢

That would indicate to me that the wiring loom that enters the tailgate is faulty - if you open the tailgate and look you may see physical damage

@@gbshinex I genuinely believe it will be the wiring through to the boot from the hinge side :)

@@gbshinex Hi, yes my number plate light, boot lock and back windscreen wiper, were not working. The mechanic looked at the wiring somewhere near the inside of the boot and said the wiring to all three things was broken. He stripped the wires back and now its working perfectly. Hope this helps!!!😀
