Clark shot 38% during the 2021 tournament though. Sonia Citron should have been MVP she was far more efficient at that World Cup. Good news for Clark though is she's a lot better now. But she plays different with better players. At Iowa none of the players were really elite. Czinano was the closest and she wasn't that great.

To beat a man's record is one thing, but to beat Pistol Pete Maravich's record is a whole new level.
@guittadabe5214
@guittadabe5214 6 ай бұрын
She really didn't as the rules were completely different. 1) In those years Maravich was not allowed to join the varsity team. He averaged over 43 points a game on the Freshman team but all his points from the 1st year did not count, I believe. 2) 3 point line was not there in those days. A coach mapped out all of Pete's shots and because he took many shots from downtown, he determined that had the line been there, he would have averaged 55 points a game instead of his official 44 points a game for his last year in college.

Citron certainly played very well, she is a fantastic athlete. However mvp awards usually tends to favor offense, Clark has higher PPG that cancels out her lower FG%, she also has lower RPG than Citron but higher APG. Points and assists are both offense stats so that probably was the basis. She was also the captain and coach/leader on the floor. Her play style is not really usually seen in the women's game so the opponents won't be able to prepare much against her and that gives the USA team an area they can take advantage of if ever they run plays around her. Clark's very deep 3s can also demoralize opposing players especially those experiencing it for the first time, making it a boon for them to crush the competition. The committee usually gives the award to the player who they think had the most impact throughout the tournament. I would have no complaints if Citron won the award cuz I think either one of them deserves it.
@turtleislandlac1490
@turtleislandlac1490 4 ай бұрын
@@appreciatorofanythingbeaut7486 14.3 ppg to 13.7 ppg is not that big a difference considering Clark also played slightly more minutes. And Citron led the team in efficiency too. I think the committee just went with Clark based on reputation. I think next summer we'll see more what Sonia can do at the WNBA level. She doesn't always get the recognition she deserves.
@appreciatorofanythingbeaut7486
@appreciatorofanythingbeaut7486 4 ай бұрын
@@turtleislandlac1490 Yes I checked and Citron has the highest efficiency and +/-. I also think that MVP voting usually turns out to be a popularity contest but Clark was not nearly as popular as she is now back in 2021. The committee probably considered intangible effects of a player not seen in stat records. If you have Clark as your main PG, the team will be pulled into a faster pacing cuz she thrives in offense so the team will also have higher shot attempts than usual leading to higher total points. Another example is the spacing provided by her deep range that the team can work on to execute more play variations. As I said, incorporating her style of play gives the team a great advantage to catch the opponents off guard because they simply aren't used to that type of game. I mean, even other teams in D1 still finds it hard to handle her style, much less foreign teams. Well, those were just possible things they also considered for the award IMO. Back to Sonia, I look forward to her final season in college before she goes to the W. ND had a great run despite lack of players due to injuries. I hope things will be better for them next season so she can play her best bball on her final year in college and enter the W without regrets.
