Hello Hagerty My dad bought one of those corvairs in 1970 .It had the rear seats removed and some cabinets placed in it to make it usable as a camper . It had a fresh home rebuilt motor , Dad put about 200 miles on it and it sucked a valve . When they did the motor work they failed to remove the o rings that are between the heads and barrels . One bank had 1 rings on one head and the other barrel had two . Made a good vacuum leak to over heat a valve and send it through a piston . Sat in a garage and became a storage unit until 2017 . MY 9O year old mom sold it for $ 800 . It was red and white with a standard trans .

Very happy to see the Atlas Allied. There were only about 50 bodies built (they could fit on a period MG). Bill Bourke, the father of the Lakester dry lakes car (WW2 aircraft surplus fuel tank), did the original splash mold when Petersen's Cisitalia needed a respray after being driven across the country by race car driver Bill Pollack. This was done at the Barris Brothers' bodyshop (owned by George and his brother). Legend has it that Petersen was pretty upset that his ad manager (Bourke) had done this, since there was still plaster of paris dust in the door jams. Bourke created a chassis along with Mickey Thompson to set a category record at Bonneville, which it did. They then set about (with Kinch handling the day to day work) building bodies for sale to support their racing efforts. By the way, Bourke's car was powered by a flathead. After the Chrysler Hemi came out, they widened the body to fit that engine.

I had a '64 Greenbrier in the early '70s. It was a super deluxe version in very good condition. They're cool vehicles! If Kyle could find an old Offenhauser engine from a 1950s or earlier Indy car, that's virtually half of a Duesenberg engine. Personally, I would prefer that to a flathead Ford and it will be much lighter. Certainly better than butchering an actual Dusey.

Cisitalia won its class in the Mille Miglia in 1947. I don't believe it ever competed at le Mans which was not held after 1939 until 1949. The company went broke rather quickly despite the high level of talent involved in the project - Dusio, Savonuzzi, Nuvolari, Taruffi, F. Porsche- it did set the standard for post-war cars.

I would say they made the body bigger when they made the initial mold. Cisitalias are tiny cars. The earlier racers were based on Fiat topolino components. This body design was achieved using aerodynamic principles so it probably has a very tight aerodynamic quotient.
@bfester15 жыл бұрын
Actually I don't think it was expanded. I have one of the bodies and while not particularly small, I was in NYC and visited MOMA where they have the original version displayed. It is really the same size.

That "Cisitalia" needs a proper period correct engine like a 40's Riley Big Four (2,5Liter 106hp) twin cam to emulate the half Dusie engine that should have been under the hood ! It's a shame to put a Ford Flathead in it. In France it was done in the 50's with the Ford Comète and Monte-Carlo... all show and no go.
@kevintucker33545 жыл бұрын
I think it would be great to get an early Offenhauser engine for this car. Finding a half Dusie block would be difficult and if someone takes a good 8 cylinder block and cuts it now?!? Shame on them!
