I thought it was way cooler than our 1956 Desoto station wagon that my dad complained about the gas mileage so much his next car was a 1962 Plymouth with the 225 slant 6. And yeah the Desoto had a hemi in it.

Looked like that Pontiac had an automatic transmission. I worked on a 48 Pontiac when I was a late teen-ager, (many moons ago. . .,) and it too had an automatic, A buddy of mine from high school inherited it after his grandfather died, and we managed to get it running. From what i understand, it was the first year for Pontiac, (or maybe GM in total,) to have the automatic. I remember to fill it with fluid, there was a gigantic bung-plug in the interior transmission hump that had to be pried loose. The sheet metal on that car was, I swear, a 1/4 inch thick. You couldn't dent that thing hitting it with a ball-peen hammer!!!

I also had a Pontiac straight 8 ,a 49. That one in the shed still has it's original style battery. I'm not sure you could buy one of those skinny things today.
