A tip for making a stronger and potentially longer lasting fiberglass part. Don't wait until the base material resin (in this case your grill cloth) to fully cure before adding a second layer/fiberglass mat. Fresh resin on completely cured resin doesn't have nearly the same bonding strength as it does when combining them before the previous layer is fully cured. The previous layer should still be a bit tacky, but not dry to the touch. I've also found that using fleece makes for a stronger part right off the hop and needs less reinforcement with additional materials. I also like the fact that the resin doesn't always seep all the way through and when you add a bit of resin to the inside of the part, and potentially more mat, this creates another mechanical and chemical bond further improving the strength.

2 points i would like to add yes tack layer first and do not let dry because good bass will cause cracks in dried layers because of not bonding correctly and fleece helps a a resonance dampener due to its thickness and maintaining a cushion of air with dense fiber inside that are still mobile

Really enjoying this series. I have done a number of a-pillar installs, because (in the right car with the right speakers) it really works for imaging and staging high in the car. I've used a number of techniques you use, but you always bring something I haven't seen before (e.g., the slurry of kitty hair filler and resin inside). Good stuff!

That's an interesting technique, mixing the resin and filler. I've used both many times before but never actually tried mixing the two into one batch.

Lachlan Jordan that works on all types of plastic especially door panels but when I do it on something heavier I'll actually put chopped mat over the resin leaking through on the back side it'll secure it really good

Hey I’m subscribed 👌 good demonstration.. There are so so many fine details and facts about fiber glass building when it comes to auto interiors that we learn the most from our mistakes. I encourage any one watching this to take that chance and try something simple on their car because it’s very gratifying and when ppl see your car, their alllll going to want it, they just don’t want to pay lol but the real reward is the reaction on ppls face weather it’s your car their looking at or something you did for them. Although I'm by no means a pro, I've got some legit experience working at bodyshops thru my mid 20s and the most important thing I learned is every project requires 85% prep and 15% alterations... it's a good guideline to learn quickly

When i build larger things like a box or doors i use thin fleece mdf staples and glue. Fleece need more ressin but it gets realy strong from the start

Cloth mat would be perfect here. Ive used it so many times on small things like these pod pillars and even kicks. The cloth is smooth already and soaks up the resin perfect. I would then add another layer while still tacky and remove air bubbles. After dried I would sand and mix up a "milkshake" of resin and filler. It thins out the bondo making application and sanding 90 percent easier. Also I use the chop mat in a mixture of liquid resin. I chop up the mat into bits and mix them together. I add the MEKP to it and use a popsicle stick to smear it on the inside of the pod or door pod or kick, strengthening from the inside thus cutting down on 6 hours of sanding to the outer surface which will have a pokey surface. Working from the inside to strengthen cuts down on hours of labor. Ive made complete kicks in a day.

when making new places for speakers, ie in doors, pillars etc, do you need to consider the volume inside the new area like you would with a subwoofer box? i figure with tweeters and small coaxials it may not matter but what about larger speakers for your door?

I was building up strength on mine by adding fiberglass layers, after applying 2 layers I didnt add too much hardener on the last 3rd layer and it didnt cure, its sticky and soft to the touch. Should I mix some resin with more hardener and add it on top, or cut the soft fiberglass out? And start over again.

What are you going to wrap them with? I've been trying to figure out that special vinyl guys use to match the factory dash.

To match an exact factory vinyl you need to match it up with a Detroit book. If it is a common vinyl you can sometimes find it cheaper off a sample card. First you match the grain or pattern, then the color. I use Miami rubber as a supplier, they do sell online direct to anyone.

you added Fiberglas resin to short strand body filler to thin it down and allow it to creep inside the panel, what did you use to cure them as I believe the Fiberglas resin uses a liquid and the body filler uses a cream and the two activators are not interchangeable with the two products as far as i know.

I'm actually shocked that you're using poly resin and not epoxy resin. Poly resin shrinks like crazy during curing, stinks like mad, and isn't that much cheaper. I've been using US Composites epoxy resin for 15+ years and highly recommend you try it on your next fiber project.

Tweeter and Mid are perfectly aligned removing the need for time alignment between the speakers and phase will remain perfect. Also have the ability to connect to each speaker individually rather than being forced to tune both through one connection as most coaxials have a built in passive crossover.

The speakers you used on that project are incredibly expensive. Like nearly $1000/pair! Are there other small coincident coax’s out there in the world? I’m not finding them, which may explain the price, more about scarcity than quality perhaps? I don’t mind paying for quality, but you can’t convince me there’s that kind of value in a small mid and tweeter combination.
