Disguised as a prison guard, Leonore has just overheard a damning conversation: Her missing husband, an activist, is indeed in the clutches of the corrupt prison director Don Pizarro, and Pizarro is planning to silence him for good.
Now alone to ponder what she has heard, Leonore calls upon hope to guide her in the aria “Komm Hoffnung” or “Come, Hope."
The aria starts softly, as Leonore wonders if the light of her love will be extinguished forever - but by the time she reaches these lines, her mood has turned fiery. She knows the righteousness of her cause, and she will not be deterred.
“Ich folg' dem innern Triebe, Ich wanke nicht, Mich stärkt die Pflicht der treuen Gattenliebe,” she declares. “I follow my inner calling. I do not waver. The true love I have for my spouse gives me strength!”
