Sorry about the long delay. Was lazy during the holidays. Part 6 is already being worked on so it won't take nearly as long :)

Please explain how to use ZOCs to your advantage and how to know if your unit is safe from a flank charge or not; how to know if you will be able to charge an enemy unit or not, when a ZOC behind a unit prevents it moving forwards, just generally all the weird ways of ZOCs. Also when a unit will evade and when it won't, there doesn't seem to be any rule about that even though there is supposed to be a reason why they will or won't evade; also how to catch a light cavalry unit

This is what it says in the FOG 2 manual "12.12.2. Effect of enemy ZOCs on Permitted Charges An enemy unit which is directly facing a square has a primary ZOC (Zone of Control) into that square. A unit that is in the primary ZOC of an enemy unit (marked in red) cannot charge a different enemy unit unless it is also in the primary ZOC of that unit. In the screenshot, the cavalry cannot charge the cohort directly to their front because they are in the primary ZOC of the other cohort. This restriction also applies if the charge path passes through a (primary) ZOCd square. Non-light troops ignore the ZOC of enemy light troops. Sometimes, when the default charge path chosen by the program passes through a ZOCd square, the charge may still be possible by moving the unit to a different intermediate square first. ZOC restrictions apply equally to player and AI units." Then in Page 129, it says: "A unit exerts a zone of control on the three tiles in front of it. Units that enter these tiles must stop." So there is no explanation of what the effects on charging of the secondary ZOC squares are, except that you have to stop movement there.

PoA's are mainly common sense plus the old rock - paper -scissors: swords beat spears, spears beats cavalry, cavalry beats swords, bows are likely to beat cavalry, everything beats bows. Only difference in FoG 2 is that nothing beats a Roman legionary, and cavalry do nothing to close formation foot.

Christopher Webber The idea behind this series is to give a brand new players the tools which will allow them to play in an intelligent fashion and win or lose based on the vision of the strategy they are trying to employ rather than stumbling around in the dark being at the mercy of interactions that they may not be aware of. For example swords do not typically beat spears as should be obvious from the series.

stumbling around in the dark is how I feel about ZOCs; so you would rather have a hoplite unit than a legionary unit? I don't think so. When I say "spears" I don't include pikes necessarily: you have to have superior warband to have any real chance to beat pikes, for instance
