I got a new Dork in the Road video, I got a Mr. Puff Puff, I got a brewed hot beverage, and I’m sitting on the back porch in the Appalachians listening to it rain. I have a ride on my DRZ planned in the Nantahala National Forest tomorrow. Life is pretty dang sweet right now.
@BrianDoherty-e8s7 ай бұрын
Sounds like you are enjoying the true spirit of the Dork, enjoying a hot beverage on the back porch listening to it rain. Right on! The thing about us Americans, we work so hard and sometimes do not stop to enjoy the fruits of our labor. Like you plan, time to get out on the moto rig and have some fun. Keep 'er between the ditches, my friend!

This was one giant ad for Motocamping Nerd, but it was so authentic. Nice touch to bring up wisdom your father taught you. That nugget about leaving the door open for opportunity was dead on. The chickens will always come home to roast -- if you do good things, good things will return! I really liked how you kicked back to enjoy a good cigar and a Coors Light; without some personal enjoyment we become like Church Lady from SNL -- cold and efficient and dead to the world. Life is for living! As far as firewood goes, I find it more convenient and free to carry a small folding bow saw. In a few minutes you can have a night's worth of firewood from surrounding dead wood within a few hundred feet and at the same time removing some fuel load from the forest. That is a good two-fer. Nice video, Dork!

Yeah you're not allowed to harvest around campgrounds in these parts. Which makes sense because if everyone did it there would be no woods to enjoy. Appreciate the view and the compliments!

The way that your sleeping bag connects with the pad is a feature that I did not know that I needed, or that it existed, before this video. Last year I splurged on a high-end bag, but now think it is lacking. Watching your videos is now costing me money, but I can't stop watching them now. I'll send you the invoice at the end of the quarter.

You know Ben.. You recommend the MSR Explorer Riding Gear several months ago and based on your recommendation I purchased a set for myself. It didn’t work out well for me because it fit poorly so I returned it but.. you are still wearing your MSR gear and that tells me you are a man of your word and your recommendation have meaning! Thanks for your honesty..

Man did you nail it with talking yourself out of it, nit picking the ‘minimal’ work involved and being negative. That is so me! Then you do it and you’re yelling to yourself under your helmet ‘This is awesome! I should’ve left yesterday! Next weekend for sure!’ But then it seems to be the same old fight with myself. Yes I’m an odd duck, with major depressive disorder. Not fun, but just get off your azz and do it, and it really is a lot of fun. Bonus, totally legit reason to buy a bike. 🤣 I know I’m preaching to the choir here, but that hit me like a ton of bricks. Also, that waterfall was amazing! Like something you see in the movies from another country or something. Very cool videos sir. Can’t wait for my 2024 KLX 230 to come in Cheers, Mike.

Hey mate. Very much enjoyed your video and took a lot away from your philosophical outlook. I've followed you for some time from my home in Newcastle, New South Wales Australia and have just bought a himalayan and have been setting it up and getting some dirt time to feel comfortable on the bike. I'm a reasonably fit 57yo and your video blogs have certainly helped to calm my own anxieties of the "unknowns". Keep up the good work and the openness of your experiences. 👍👌

When I worked construction I'd start drinking Coors light at seven in the morning and finish up around ten at night. That and two packs of Marlborough a day took its toll though. Last time I had a cigar I thought it would kill me. Heart was racing like crazy. I'm 55 now, run 3-5 miles a day, don't drink or smoke anymore. Honestly, I feel better now than I felt in my twenties.

18:45 These kinds of hobbies are so helpful because they're meditative in at least two fashions. 1. Challenging riding keeps you in the zone of proximal development (very rewarding by itself), where your brain is forced to only be "in the moment." 2. Quiet time in nature allows your mind to wander and reflect opening up room for both serendipity and introspection. Long story short: Go outside. 😁

I know you probably won't read this, Dork in the road, but for anyone else that does. Dehydrated meals prep instructions are only good up to like 4,000 feet. and you should double the time for every 4,000 feet added. However, from my experience, if you are at 6,000 feet then you should add an extra 5ish minutes to the cook time. You won't get the dry stuff in your meal when you do this. I hope this helps anyone that reads it!
