Even though I'm not a hunter...(I don't even eat meat, lol) I really appreciate these videos, and seeing these working dogs doing what they were bred to do. I see so many "family dogs" who unfortunately have issues because they aren't provided enough of an outlet for their energy - particularly the dogs who would rather have a job. I have a working type retriever mix. Despite having low drive and zero prey drive, he's happiest outside in the bush, running, retrieving and swimming.

So happy for an Irish Setter vid! Great video
@Janeway12696 жыл бұрын
Zeke you are making me swoon with these videos. THAT is a "red setter." I have to laugh when I look at Irish Setters in Westminster and I hear the announcer talk about what the dogs do or did, as if the conformation I'm seeing in the ring lends itself to any of that. Here we see the curtain hair, domed heads and giraffe necks and other exxagerated features serve no purpose but human whimsies that seem to appease the eye of a tiny circle of people. This field dog, looks like a DOG, and one that is happy doing something active and engaging to his instincts. This setter Reminds me of the books about Big Red that I used to read as a child, in Pennsylvania, the Pocono Mountains. I'm a NYC girl but my Oma and Opa retired there. Spent great summers and holidays there, and there were loads of Germanic hunters there. GSPs were actually the dog of the area. It seemed like every other person had them, including German imported Deutsche Kurzhaars, black dogs. Keep it up Zeke!

Great video, love seeing the dogs do what they are bred to do and what makes them happy. Only small correction is at 4:29: Irish Setters are not a continental breed (continental meaning that they come from mainland Europe, like GSPs). Instead Reds are part of FCI Pointer Group, Section 2: British and Irish. Super small differentiation but just in case anyone wanted to know how the breeds are divided.

Fantastic video and those are two beautiful dogs. My ex wife has a GSHP and I sometimes take her out shooting and the amount of ground she can cover is impressive - and she does it with such grace - even over quite rough terrain. Definitely a proper working dog. Never worked with an Irish Setter but one point to note - they are not a 'continental breed' as they come from the British Isles rather than the continent of Europe.

I am so excited for August, I am getting a border collie puppy from an amazing breeder, on his mother’s side his grandmother is a champion, his grandfather is an import champion in fact the majority of his mother’s ancestors are champions. On his fathers side his father became a champion before he was even two years old. And every ancestor on his fathers side was a Champion going back 5 generations I don’t just mean show champion either they all have their CGCS titles and many other titles like dock diving, agility, herding, lure cursing, etc. Both the mother and father have all health testing done like hips, collie eye, bear and many more. The mother has good hips and the father has excellent hips and his grandparents on both sides have good to excellent hips as well. I am so excited, this will be my first show/sport dog!

Border collies are an amazing breed! High energy and so very smart. Who are you getting your puppy from? Where do you live?
@balancedpoweryinyang89846 жыл бұрын
Tim Hutchins I live in Ohio and I would be getting a puppy from Sterling Bridge Border Collies though is not to sure I still want a Border Collie, I have fallen in love with Saint Bernards and they fit my lifestyle perfectly
@timhutchins56996 жыл бұрын
Good for you - pick a breed that suits you and your lifestyle. My best friend has Saints and they are amazing. Lots of hair and drool though. Hahaha We show Schipperkes and live in ND. . I would highly recommend that if you show, find yourself a mentor. Though I grew up showing Dobermans, the breeder of my first show schipperke became my mentor, her guidance and information was invaluable. That was almost 20 years ago, how time flies!

Tim Hutchins thank you, I have found a few Saint Bernard breeders in Ohio but sadly a lot of them either don’t show or health test their dogs but I will keep looking. I already have a 1 year old SB that I took from someone who could no longer have him. Now I am just looking to get a puppy from a good reputable breeder that will mentor and guide me. But I’m in no hurry to get a puppy I am having fun experiencing the breed with my male he might not come from champion lines but he is still an amazing dog and he is teaching me so much about his breed

My friends Saints are not show dogs. She has bought from both show breeder and local farm breeder. Each and every one of them had/have hip dysplasia and the two she got from the show breeder also had mega esophagus, very sad. I wish people would put the Heath of the dogs first. To me, the best show dogs are family pets first and foremost.

Este setter irlandés es como el que tuve yo hace varios años. Esa línea es la de los antiguos setter irlandés. Eran grandes cazadores y perros sanos. Los de ahora son sólo estética y con muchos problemas de salud. Que lastima.

Field bred Irish Setters are not a continental breed. They are smart, racy, amazing athletes and beautiful. I owned one. She was also a amazing swimmer.

This guy went from Bluetick Coonhounds, which have particularly beautiful voices, to dogs that fetch dead poultry?!? I just don't get that. Yeah, these bird dogs can be impressive in how stylishly they work a field and lock in on a point, but a good blue dog can run down a mountain lion or a bobcat in the big rocks. No comparison IMHO.
@salmonspooge2112 жыл бұрын
Comparing a hound to an upland bird dogs speed is literally comparing a dump truck to a sports car. Hounds aint catching no cougars man, get real. No hound could keep up with any breed of true upland dog. Bred for different purposes. No offense meant here, just facts.
@RowdyRory2 жыл бұрын
@@salmonspooge211 Now it's you who doesn't know what you're talking about. You're exaggerating. Hounds aren't "faster" than cougars (neither is a GSP) over a short distance, but hounds can run them down because they have better endurance over longer distances. How else do you think they manage to "tree" them? I know because I do it here in Colorado. But yeah, a pointer or a setter is generally much quicker than a hound, and if poultry is your quarry, they are fantastic. I'm just not interested in hunting poultry. Upland bird dogs are marginally faster and quicker than hounds, but the sports car/dump truck is a grotesque overstatement. But a mature mountain lion would have no touble catching one. Hell, a big cat can leap 20 feet or more in a single bound. They are like a huge house cat. A lion would make short work of a couple of bird dogs. They aren't tough enough either and while they could track one, I don’t think they could take the pounding of a long track in the mountains. You best keep them in a wheat field or a cornfield. They are pretty, too, I'll allow and the women and libtards think they're real, genuine "hunting dogs". And they can really handle those delicate game birds with that soft mouth they've got. A hound will just chew them up because they are bred to fight what they run to catch and that isn't some chicken.
@zsuzsuspetals2 жыл бұрын
@@RowdyRory Why are you bent on insulting gundogs? "women and libtards think they're real genuine hunting dogs" WTF? No women and libtards are all about their "pitties" these days. It's not a real dog unless it's a rescued pitbull for the SJW's to virtue signal about. Gun dogs like setters, retrievers, spaniels and pointers ARE hunting dogs. They are just dogs used to hunt bird. Scenthounds like coonhounds are used for different purposes. No one type of dog is better than another. They are all hunting dogs. It just depends on your game. No need to insult bird dogs or bird hunters. But if we want to get "real" and talk about the king of hounds? How about sighthounds like an Irish Wolfhound? Or a borzoi? Or a Scottish Deerhound? No guns needed. A wolfhound can knock a wolf off its feet and kill by itself.
@RowdyRory2 жыл бұрын
@@zsuzsuspetals You have a point, especially about the neurotics and their "rescues". I live in one of those "late" college towns, so I know all about that. That's why I said the THEIR idea of a "hunting dog" is...Again, if you just need a dog to fetch dead poultry.then that, of course, is right. And if you want a beautiful suburban dog for your daughter get one of those tri-color English Springers. Say what you want about coonhounds, but almost all of them are working dogs. BTW, most of those sighthounds are nothing like the dogs that originally went by those names. The historic Irish Wolfhounds went extinct and the current breed was re-invented. Guys that chase coyotes or hares use crossbreeds or lurchers so they're game enough. Most other breeds consist even what you call bird dogs mostly of show lines, except for some gundog or retriever strains. Even those are being displaced by "English" labs. I'm genuinely impressed when I see a pointing lab--they are few and far between. Face it: this guy probably shifted from coonhounds to bird dogs because there's a lot more money in it. My prejudice is that I don’t care to hunt colorful barnyard fowl.
