In a shaded rainforest understory gully, Patrick Blanc shows different aspects of the life traits and adaptations of the iconic Amborella trichopoda which is considered as the sister plant of all the other flowering plants or Angiosperms. Amborella shares many adaptive characters with other primitive groups such as the basal repetition of stems leading progressively to a single trunk, the vegetative propagation through natural stem cuttings and the indentated leaf margin with each tooth ending in a hydathode, a kind of glandular structure allowing absorption of water by the roots in this humidity saturated and non windy environment as well as excretion of waste minerals and organic molecules like the kidney of animals.

Merci.

Thanks and don't forget the talentuous work by Pascal. We are so happy to do this while visiting many places sometimes of quite difficult access (but sometimes easy...). Always good to show the most humble parts of the plants which are responsible of their growth and survival.

Thanks. Yes, I think it is good to try to understand the growth habits of these species surviving since many million years.

thank you for this video! It is amazing to see how variable the leaf margin is along with other interesting features. I am curious if you were able to see the incredible Parasitaxus usta? Another New Caledonian oddity. best regards.

Thanks ! Yes, the marginal hydathodes were probably a very important innovation, together with the wide leaf, in primitive Angiosperms in order to face the low light intensity, high humidity and absence of wind in this rainforest environment where they most probably appeared. The ability to produce new basal shoots with a vigor adjusted to light intensity is also probably essential concerning the potential immortality of the individual plant. No, unfortunately, we did not meet Parasitaxus since it is mostly living in forests at quite high altitude which are under control of local people or needing long time to get authorizations to visit the areas but maybe one day...

@@creaturefree oh yes I see maybe one day! And yes the hydathodes are very interesting, I was not aware of their function before. I learned something new today :)

Merci beaucoup.

Thanks. We have been in the forests of Seram and Ambon in last April. So beautiful plants, especially among Alpinias, Begonias, Medinillas, Cyrtandra and so on.
