In a shaded rainforest understory gully, Patrick Blanc shows different aspects of the life traits and adaptations of the iconic Amborella trichopoda which is considered as the sister plant of all the other flowering plants or Angiosperms. Amborella shares many adaptive characters with other primitive groups such as the basal repetition of stems leading progressively to a single trunk, the vegetative propagation through natural stem cuttings and the indentated leaf margin with each tooth ending in a hydathode, a kind of glandular structure allowing absorption of water by the roots in this humidity saturated and non windy environment as well as excretion of waste minerals and organic molecules like the kidney of animals.
