I've been meaning to put this one together for a while, but I knew it was going to be a long one. Yet today is a 3-way detailed comparison of some of the best premium field watches you can get. The Hamilton Khaki King, Seiko Alpinist, and Orient Star Outdoor. Which one will win? Which one is your favorite?
Note: Some of the links above are affiliate links, I am an Amazon, Armilla, Aliexpress, Spinnaker, eBay and Phoibos affiliate so I would earn a small commission on qualified purchases. But most of the time Amazon is just the best source to link something just to get a look. I always encourage you to shop around and find the best price.

Good job Shane, I’ve got 2 observations; 1. You resemble Chevy Chase. 2. With the gloves you remind me of when. Clark Griswold was in the attic reminiscing over old Christmas movies while wearing purple gloves. 😂😂😂 My favorite Watch by the way is the Orient Outdoor. Take care!

This was a great comparison, though I can't agree the OrientStar is unique in any way. The reason is simple, Rolex's 2nd or 3rd most popular watch is the *Rolex Explorer* which famously made it to the top of Everest. It's one of the most versatile watches there is, though there's a lot more steel on it versus the Orient, and of course the price tag and quality that comes with it. As such, I cannot bring myself to consider the Outdoors unique. The most unique is easily the Alpinist - I am surprised that no-one has copied this design since the Red Alpinist in 1995. Not even homages. And for that it is an easy win.

Such a professional voice, useful and logical information, outdoor and indoor shots, strap changes, and video editing. Very impressive video! It was a joy to watch, thank you! I have a Khaki King, but now I really want an Orient Outdoor because of the power reserve indicator which for me would be sedative :) I wish it has a domed sapphire, not the flat one.

At the spec sheet, in the beginning, the Alpinist Lug Width is not 22mm, it's 20mm. 2. When I mention my next review will be the Traska Summiter, I meant my next Field Watch review. I haven't even gotten it yet. 3. This was a suggestion by Tom Cantu on how to improve the Hamiton Strap: "I finally found a method to make the Hamilton leather strap comfortable for me. It is twice as thick near the lugs as it is at the buckle. That upper portion just refuses to flex easily and I think that it what makes it uncomfortable to wear. I applied some Obenaufs LP to both sides of the bands and then took a few minutes to flex it the entire length of the band bending it in both directions. Now the band conforms to my wrist and I almost forget that I am wearing it. It did make the band just a bit darker in color but it still looks great! If you have new Hamilton bands sitting in a drawer because you find them uncomfortable you might give this a try. Adding some waterproofing to a nice leather band is a plus as well."

Interesting review. Orient is a fantastic brand, but the Orient Star really is a cut above the normal Orients so it doesn't surprise me it won this. Having said that I'd personally probably go for the Hamilton as its looks appeal to me more, and is more versatile. Which I think despite everyone's obsession with specs, are more important categories than people admit to

Can't ever go wrong with a Hammy...I have several models and they're all great watches. Thanks for the review. Great stuff. I really like the alpinist, but to be honest the all polished is not for me because I cant stand scratches on a polished case. It's my biggest complaint with my Oris Aquis. Within a day, I started picking up scratches on the polished band sections.

I guess I'm screw down crown agnostic. I just can't see that factoring in my watch decisions. I don't dive. I go to the pool, I go to the beach, I swim, I get caught in the rain. 100m of water resistance is fine by me. 50m is fine for most situations, actually, and I don't perceive a higher quality of watch just because the crown threads into the case. Matter of fact, it's an inconvenience every time I want to wind the watch or set the time. Anyhow, more great content from Relative Time! You picked 3 very nice pieces to compare. The Alpinist, far and away, is the looker of the group. It is simply a gorgeous watch in white and silver. I think it's tops in uniqueness too. The only other watch that looks like an Alpinist is another Alpinist. The relative value and the thickness are the things that will ultimately keep me from buying it, though.

I think for a field watch you should expect it to get dings and scratches. You don’t want to have to worry about it getting messed up because it just will. I think it’s more about reliability and durability. The orient is pretty nice and easy to read but the Hamilton seems to be the easiest to read. I’m not sure about the Orient but the Hamilton’s tend to get complaints about condensation forming under the glass. That power reserve on the orient is nice... I like Hamilton’s black face white number dial version... If you had to keep one it would have to be the Orient as you can always pick up the other two but need to eBay the Orient.

I would order them as Hamilton, Alpinist, and then Orient Star. Until now, Orient Star was unknown to me. I just can't enjoy the looks of the Orient Star, as much as the other two and thus my rating. The fact that the Alpinist is twice the cost of the Hamilton should be called out. My budget wouldn't allow a $500 plus spend, and the Hamilton was $396 with tax and shipping. A great review, as analytical as one could get!

Hamilton by a mile, most attractive, most tuned in movement (seikos and orient certainly more hit or miss), thinnest and will have least depreciation. The only downside is 50m, if that's not an issue for you it's it's an easy pick IMO

I've got the Khaki King & the 017 Alpinist, & for me the Seiko is better quality (tho the Hamilton is lovely) & better value (there's much more work gone into it) so I can only guess that the new Alpinists are even better...Not had an Orient so couldn't comment from experience. Thanks for the video, great job 👌 I have gone for the 'Ghost' Alpinist, suits my needs more than the Khaki with 200m WR, cream dial and arguably equal history of the watch. I think at some point I may pick up a black dial Khaki however my next watch will be a dress Chrono then the collection will be on hold for a while. I agree that Seiko could have easily made the 2020 Alpinist tje best field watch ever but missed the mark by including the cyclops, increasing the thickness and removing the signed crown however IMO the Seiko is still the better watch even at £100 more.......the price of an evening out which I am saving due to lock down😉👍

I agree with you, the finishing of the OS case is pretty good for the price. The Seiko Alpinist is the prettiest of the three you've shown, but if I were to choose a simple field watch I will not be afraid of banging around, the OS Outdoor takes my vote :)

I think another category of comparison could be the ease and cost of maintenance.... I think Seiko here would be the winner as it usually easier to find someone to regulate or repair the watch at a lower cost. Hamilton would probably need an authorized dealer/watchsmith. I am not sure about the Orient one as it is not as common as the other two. Of course it all depends on where you are...USA, Europe, etc

I have owned multiple Seikos with this movement and they are really hit and miss and can be out by as much as 16 seconds a day. I have a Sarb 035 and a Sarb 033 and one is out by 5 seconds and one is a mile out and needs a service. On which note Seiko are not cheap when it comes to authorised servicing. I own two Hamilton's, I own the black Khaki King and I own the Pilot, otherwise known as the Interstellar watch as worn by Mathew McConaughey. The two Hamiltons are near cosc - I mean they dont ever drop more than 3 seconds a day. They are seriously good ETA movements. So as much as I love Seiko (and I do) there is absolutely no comparison here when it comes to movements. Hamilton's ETA wipes the floor with the 6R15. Also I could not disagree more re the watch straps. The Hamilton watch strap is seriously good quality. It costs £75 for someone looking to replace it. The Seiko Alpinist has been infamous fir having nasty cheap as shit, chuck it straight in the bin straps, Orient is not much better. The materials, the signed buckle, the stitching etc. The Hamilton strap is light years ahead. The issue you can have with the Khaki King is the polished bezel which can attract dings. I would say the Orient looks far better in that regard being brushed. The Alpinist is also renown for having chapter ring issues where it slips and doesn't line up properly. P.S My grail watch is a Seiko and I own more Seikos than any other watch...It just so happens that the Alpinist is not a particularly good Seiko (adding the cyclops made it even more derivative) and nowhere near as good as Hamilton's Khaki King. Seiko offers killer value elsewhere.
@iosifprogoulakis296
@iosifprogoulakis296 4 жыл бұрын
@@christophercoey7804 my experience with Seikos is that you can have them serviced or regulated by non-Seiko authorized watchsmiths at a relative low cost. Reason for this is that the Seiko engines are built to be simple, robust and easily maintained with an abundance of spares available. For the ETA movements you need an authorized dealer/watchsmith and that would be more expensive.
@christophercoey7804
@christophercoey7804 4 жыл бұрын
@@iosifprogoulakis296 - either compare authorized repairers or don't, you can't have it both ways! Also It's not just my experience, but the experience of many other people that I have spoken to who have also had multiple 6R15s. The 6R15 is just much, much more likely to be off and require a service than the ETA. So how you can turn this into a win for Seiko is beyond me. It is 8.04 am here and I am wearing a Sarb035 with a genuine green croc strap - it rocks! The key to the Sarbs unequivocally is NOT the quality of the movement, it is the quality of the cases and the dials and the design - they're gorgeous. When I go to my Seiko SKX the key is how robust it is and again how amazing the dial and design is (not a 6R15, but again, the point being is, it aint about accuracy of movement). But.anyway these Seiko 6R15 movements are just patchy as hell and nowhere near as accurate as the Hamilton ETAs. You talk about IF they go wrong, they don't tend to lol. The Seikos are often wrong out the box! And It is also ridiculous to compare an authorised repairer against Billy Bob the watchman, who can sort your watch out. The Hamilton movement is more accurate and less likely to fail and need the service and I see nothing that tells me it is cheaper even then to service the Seiko as I have seen the cost of Seiko servicing and it aint cheap. Getting some watch shop to knock a watch into shape is a whole different kettle of mistakes lol.

I took this analysis one step further and applied weighting to your results. For example movement durability dial lume and value got a 1 for me. Case got a .8 while versatility and PQ rated .7. Unique and strap .5. Then I multiplied your score results. Still very close but the Hammy edged the Orient by .5 and the Seiko landed again in third. It was a fun exercise to tailor your results to my preferences. These are the silly things we do when we can’t afford to buy all three. With Covid-19 around we all certainly have some free time on our hands.

I missed this one...Great comparison… The only thing that stops me from saying the khaki King wins hands down is the water resistance rating… I want to see 100 m on any watch that’s not a dress watch…And before somebody makes the comment let me point out that 50 m Water resist means if you fall in the water and immediately get back out, you are probably ok... Because of that I’ll go with the Alpinist. I have to mention that great camerawork again as well! Watch companies should hire you to match their watches with NATO’s, bracelets, And leather straps. Like Bill Clinton said “It’s the strap stupid”....Something like that anyway... I’m gonna stop trying, because When I copy what you have done it always looks better! Many thanks to you and your channel for making my hobby more ‘enjoyable’...

These are all great IMHO. I never fell for the original Alpinist (olive green metallic dial and gold stuff on top, way too garish for me, didn't get the hype), but this white one is way more sophisticated and more to my taste. Clearly, they're all great quality watches and they all have goods and bads which make them similar in quality to me. I would be happy with anyone of these. However, since I'm both shallow and a sucker for silver burst dials, I'd go for the Hamilton here lol. Considering knowing that Orient Star is premium level for not really premium money, I'm kinda sad saying the above. But for me Orient Star shines most with their more dressy watches. And just for the record, I'm also a Seiko fan lol. Another great video from you which I highly enjoyed. Keep up the great work!

I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Easily one of your best. I found this to be very timely information. I've been thinking about the new Alpinist. After seeing it compared to the champagne Khaki King which I own as well as the Orient Outdoor I've decided to hold off until the price comes down and hopefully Seiko refines it a bit more. The Outdoor has its strengths but the 21mm lug size and the unadorned dial leave me wanting more. I'd love to see a sunburst dial on it like the Kamasu. The Khaki King is an amazing watch that I think I’ll never part with. Imagine if it had a screw down crown? You gave a fair breakdown for each watch and they are all winners.

I just watched 3 of your videos on field watches in a row. Damn, they are good. Thorough, insightful, genuine. Rock on. I subbed last week and look forward to catching up on your work. BTW: I would choose the Hamilton- but ideally the 28800 ETA movement version. Swiss made, genuine military history, dress/casual and just classy. Cheers, Phil

Solid review/comparison. I like the orient best of the 3. Somehow I don't trust the 6r15. I don't care for the fact that the eta can't be regulated. And I never hear of problems with orient movements. So I'd go with the orient. Now if the Hamilton had a normal eta 2824, then I'd lean that way.

I have a Khaki King black dial, but after seeing the champagne dial for some time now I think I might have made an error in my color choice. The strap that came with it made me realize that I should have gotten the factory bracelet instead because they cost a fortune to get from Hamilton after the fact, hopefully strapcode will come up with something at some point. Your review was spot on and I liked the format. Good stuff as usual.

Hopefully strap code eventually comes out with one. I'd buy it in a second. Someone emailed me recently that they used leather conditioner on their stock Hammy strap. Supposedly it really turned it around and made it nice and flexible. I ordered some to give it a try.

Well done. I would have picked the Hammy, since it is a more well known brand than Orient and the Orient’s design is way less interesting to me.

I would choose the Hamiton. The Day/Date is very important when you are camping or boating for a few days. You will be surprise how you loose track of the day or date in those situations...Trust me on this one!

For me the Hamilton is my favorite. It's a kind of a curse to have the 80 H PR because all other watches feel like not having enough juice once you've experienced the extended PR. I got the champagne dial version too and it's just so classy IMO. I also got the SARB017 which I prefer over the new version. I might be able to forgive the Prospex "X" on the dial and the cyclop if it wasn't for the misalignment on the compass ring (same with my SARB017). For me there's too much "Flieger" on the Orient. It's like it's sitting between two chairs in this category.

Thanks for the good review. A while ago, I couldnt really see myself wearing a field watch, but now I think I'm ready. I like the Orient very much, except the power reserve indicator. I respect the complication, and they have placed it in the middle, but still. I'd rather have a date window at 6 and move the writing to the place of the PR indicator. The old Alpinist never really grew on me, stainless case and golden hands have always been a no go for me. This new one is more tasteful I think. I think the Hamilton will be my winner. For an everyday watch I need the date at my hand, and the weekday is a nice feature; "day-date-style". I love the Rolex Explorer 1 too (not keen on the 2) but can I do without the date? Hmm. BTW, I cant understand that you dont have more subscribers, you have been doing a very good job for the past couple of years that I have been following you.

To me a field watch doesn't need 200m water resistance. If it goes half that deep then I've fallen out of the canoe and drowned. My first choice would be Khaki King. I just like a field watch to have ledgable numbers and the 24 hr as well. The Hamilton just has all that and the style that suits me. Black dial of coarse.

I just received my Traska Summiteer with black dial and silver/white hands. I also own a green dial Alpinist, and used to have a Hamilton. IMO, the Summiteer leaves these others behind in every category except for brand recognition. Definitely do a review on yours when you get it. Great Channel.

Thanks! I got it yesterday. Got a gorgeous blue with a red hand. instagram.com/p/B_yDZ9IHpTu/ A little concerned about the bracelet, some of the screws were not wanting to cooperate, but otherwise very impressed. It's so thin, and so comfortable.

@@RelativeTime -- I have 7.5" wrists and had to remove one link. Had the same issue. I took my time. I think they might have used "lock tight" on the threads during assembly. It went back in fine for me after. But if you do not have the correct sized screwdriver I can see some folks stripping it. Otherwise I am very happy. My friends Rolex Explorer 39mm did not look any better IMO, on wrist. In fact I think the Traska case is nicer dimensioned. The Rolex bracelet was nicer. edges were finished better, but otherwise I am very happy. This is the poor-man's Rolex Explorer.

the orient star is excellent for a control freak like me. i absolutely need to know how much juice there is left in the watch or i'm going nuts. that's why i only have owned solar quartz (never run out of juice) and mechanical watches with power indicator.

I've been deciding between the Orient Star Outdoor and the Hamilton Khaki Field Auto 40 mm (not the Khaki King). I think I'm leaning toward Hamilton, but then I can't decide on which color I like--green, old paper, or brown. The old paper Khaki Field Auto's band is ugly but it's irrelevant since I'd be switching it out.

Yes it is. I didn't notice that mistake in the beginning until you mentioned it. I even watched it twice looking for mistakes, but I was more listening then watching. O well. Although I know I mention that it's 20mm in the strap section. So at least it's just the beginning thats off.

Relative Time True, you had it mentioned correctly on the strap part. 2020 Alpinist would’ve been much better received if it had been released at around $500 max retail. Also think the thicker see through caseback was a misstep IMHO. Lastly, would it kill them to print “Alpinist” on the dial (maybe in red again)?! Really enjoyed the comps!

Alpinist, would be my choice if we were talking about the older version which I believe is thinner then the new ones. I don't like the cyclopes window on the new ones either. I just think it's a overall nicer looking and more interesting watch, scratches or not. You must be really hard on your watches, because mine looks like it did when I brought it, no noticeable scratches at all, and I've worn it to work on many occasions (Physically active, hands on hospital worker. Not a desk jockey) as well as multiple other activities. I also prefer the 200m water resistance, lume, and the cathedral hands. My second choice would be the Hamilton. It's a classic. Not impressed with the Orient. Thanks for a great video!

I find value in something that HOLDS its value, not one that nose dives as soon as you walk out of the shop. In this case the Seiko should win that one IMO. However I thin the Hamilton 40mm auto H70595593 beats all of these hands down. Great review.

Normally I think you'd be right on the resale value. Although in this case if I sold all 3 it would be the one I'd loose the most on. But that's my fault for buying it at full retail. Meanwhile I bought the hammy at such a good price I wouldn't loose anything.

What about a “re-sale value” factor? Taking into consideration the popularity and desirability of the Hamilton and the Alpinist, I think these models would be much easier to re-sell at a good price than the Orient Star. Of course, for many buyers, this point would not be a consideration, but for those inveterate flippers who like to “sell and change”, it is an issue.
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 4 жыл бұрын
That would be an interesting category. Makes sense. Personally I usually check what something is going for on eBay before I buy it new. Just to see how much I might loose if I don't like it. Have to think about that one...

I think the "Swiss" heritage of the Hamilton would probably bring this to first place comparing to the other two. The Seiko Alpinist is overpriced for what it offers. The Orient is not as versatile with the 21mm lug width.

definition of unique:being the only one of its kind; unlike anything else it's hard for me to call the orient "unique" when even the person making the video calls it a "explorient" the Alpinist is Iconic, and there are no other watches out there like it, which is why it is more unique.
