Except that, based on that last T20 rule, it's absolute bollocks! Talk about your ambiguous ruling. Far too strongest a penalty for a no ball, far too subjective a call, and a completely subtle call by the umpire that no fielder with his eye on the ball is going to notice. Complete balderdash!

LBW isn't *too* hard to explain in general terms - it's essentially analogous to an intentional hit by pitch in baseball. Just need to cover off that you don't have to run after hitting the ball, Which allows for defensive shots, and that's it in a nutshell.

The word 'wicket' can mean several things in cricket. 1. When one of the batsmen gets out, it is recorded as a 'wicket' for the bowling team. 2. The central length of turf on which the batting and bowling takes place is often called 'the pitch' but it can also be called 'the wicket'. 3. The wooden sticks at either end of the pitch can also be called 'the wicket/s'. Props to Jomboy and everyone from non-cricket nations for showing some interest in our funny little game.

Another great video by jomboy, hope people get into t20 cricket, it's a great format for starters, son caveats though: 1. If the fielder had touched the boundary while in contact with the ball, it would have 6 runs not 4 since, the ball didn't bounce, in this case it would have 7( since it was a no ball). 2. No ball above waist height is given only if the ball doesn't bounce, if the ball bounces then it is not a no ball(although there are few caveats here as well but that should be good enough for now). 3. The reason why run outs are permitted on free hit and no balls is because otherwise batters would just keep on running till they get tired, making that ball way more important than it should be. I can help anyone who wants to learn about this game just ask:)

I know this was months ago, but maybe you'll still see it. I thought the bowler MUST bounce the ball in, and that it was illegal for the ball not to bounce. It looked like the bowler deliberately threw a non-bouncing ball. Why? Also thank you, your caveats helped explain no balls really well!

@@schuckdaddy1318 hey, luckily I was still on KZbin, the bouncing part is not a rule is just that bouncing is encouraging as the surface provides variation and unpredictability. If the fielder's foot had touched the rope, it would actually have been a six because the ball did not come in contact with the ground. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWbMe52obN6hetU The beginning of this video shows an example.

It's an interesting discussion. I believe it would be 4 in this case as he already grounded his other foot inside the boundary line.
@richjhart
@richjhart 2 жыл бұрын
@@RamsBereit Definitely six - it doesn't matter whether the fielder touched inside the boundary or not, the ball didn't. It's covered clearly in 19.4-19.7: 19.4 Ball grounded beyond the boundary 19.4.1 The ball in play is grounded beyond the boundary if it touches - the boundary or any part of an object used to mark the boundary; - the ground beyond the boundary; - any object that is grounded beyond the boundary. 19.4.2 The ball in play is to be regarded as being grounded beyond the boundary if - a fielder, grounded beyond the boundary as in 19.5, touches the ball; - a fielder, after catching the ball within the boundary, becomes grounded beyond the boundary while in contact with the ball, before completing the catch. 19.5 Fielder grounded beyond the boundary 19.5.1 A fielder is grounded beyond the boundary if some part of his/her person is in contact with any of the following: - the boundary or any part of an object used to mark the boundary; - the ground beyond the boundary; - any object that is in contact with the ground beyond the boundary; - another fielder who is grounded beyond the boundary, if the umpire considers that it was the intention of either fielder that the contact should assist in the fielding of the ball. 19.5.2 A fielder who is not in contact with the ground is considered to be grounded beyond the boundary if his/her final contact with the ground, before his/her first contact with the ball after it has been delivered by the bowler, was not entirely within the boundary. ... 19.7 Runs scored from boundaries 19.7.1 A Boundary 6 will be scored if and only if the ball has been struck by the bat and is first grounded beyond the boundary without having been in contact with the ground within the field of play. This shall apply even if the ball has previously touched a fielder. 19.7.2 A Boundary 4 will be scored when a ball that is grounded beyond the boundary - whether struck by the bat or not, was first grounded within the boundary, or - has not been struck by the bat. So in this case, the following would apply: "The ball in play is to be regarded as being grounded beyond the boundary if ... a fielder, after catching the ball within the boundary, becomes grounded beyond the boundary while in contact with the ball, before completing the catch." "A Boundary 6 will be scored if and only if the ball has been struck by the bat and is first grounded beyond the boundary without having been in contact with the ground within the field of play. This shall apply even if the ball has previously touched a fielder."

@@RamsBereit No. if a fielder touches the boundary (or goes beyond it) while trying to catch its always 6 runs. Jomboy messed up by saying its 4 runs instead of 6. Some background on why this was a no-ball. In all forms of cricket, if the bowler's front foot is in front of the crease (line) when it comes down, it is an automatic no-ball. In T20, extra rules apply. If the ball reaches the batsman without bouncing (called a full toss) and is above waist height, this is a no-ball. Similarly, if a ball does bounce but reaches the batter above shoulder height (called a bouncer), this is also a no-ball. In this case, the ball is clearly a full toss above waist height, and so is called a no-ball. The reason for these variations in T20 is to stop bowlers bowling physically unhittable balls if the game is close.
@richardeldridge1604
@richardeldridge1604 2 жыл бұрын
OK, close but losing points for conflating wides (balls delivered otherwise legally but which can't be hit with a normal cricket shot) and no balls. Bouncers over shoulder height might be allowed in T20 depending on specific playing conditions of the competition. Bouncers over head height are always wides. Full tosses above waist height are always no balls, not just in T20. Wait until Jomboy has to explain the back foot no ball, that one confuses everyone 🤣

@richjhart

A couple of things: - The reason for throwing the ball in the air is because of an old law (changed in my lifetime), that a catch was not complete until the player performed a controlled release of the ball. Throwing it in the air was actually the "end" of the catch (and very visible). Look up Hershelle Gibbs for a famous example of failing to release the ball properly... - They would have got 6 if he touched the boundary with the ball, because the ball had not hit the ground. That would have also been the case if his throw had gone over the boundary on the full (and that would have been on top of any runs they "ran", because it was deliberate and been counted as "overthrows" - normally you only get either the boundary or the runs you run, but there are circumstances where you can get both). - It is not just T20 cricket where the modes of dismissal are limited on a no ball. It is fundamental to the laws of cricket. The "free hit" rule is the part that is specific to limited overs. - There are other ways to be dismissed on a no ball. You can also be out "hit twice" or "obstructing the field". The first is vanishingly rare, the second does happen every now and again.

"a catch was not complete until the player performed a controlled release of the ball" … This is not quite correct. The law introduced in 1980 says that it's a fair catch if (among other scenarios) the fielder "retains complete control over the further disposal of the ball". This has never meant that the catcher has to throw the ball to complete the catch, he can just hold onto it. But it does mean that if the fielder immediately throws the ball, it must be with complete control. Herschelle Gibbs's dropped catch is a perfect example of a player trying to throw the ball before he had the "complete control" mentioned in the law. If he just holds it, at any time in the game's history, that's out.

Small corrections; if his foot hit the rope it's 6 runs not 4 (since the ball "hit the rope" without hitting the ground), and also it's only a no ball above the waist on a bowl that doesn't bounce on the pitch (a "full toss"). If the ball hits the wicket it can bounce above the waist - BUT if it bounces above the batter's *head* it is a no ball.
@anthonycarey7641

Just a technical point. When the ball gets to the batsman above the waist, it is only a no ball (not allowed) if it hasn't bounced first (as is the case with this breakdown). If the ball bounces before it reaches the batsman, it is allowed to rise above the waist but then becomes a no ball if it rises above the batsman's shoulders or head (I forget which and it may vary depending on the competetion)

At 1:40, in ALL formats of cricket, a batsman cannot get dismissed on a no-ball unless they are different. In One Day and T20 cricket however, following a no-ball is a freehit, which is another ball in which you cannot get out unless you get run out. In test cricket (the best format btw), there is no freehit following a no-ball...
@ofs82
@ofs82 2 жыл бұрын
I agree that test is the best format, but we must also remember that these videos are geared to a novice audience reared on baseball. Using T20 and ODI cricket as a base to explain the sport is the way to go. There are far more subtleties and nuances in test cricket, and the craftsmanship of manipulating the shine on the red ball and working away on a plan for several overs at a time is a beautiful art when you see it done properly, but also test cricket is the reason cricket gets perceived as slow and antiquated, because the length and pace of the game is off-putting to novice fans who are lost in a fog of terms and concepts that they are struggling to understand - T20 gives a faster paced hook by which to understand the concepts of the sport, the scoring system, the ways of getting out and so on, and those who are interested can then move on to trying out the more traditional styles and learn the nuances and differences between white ball and red ball bowling (and indeed batting) and hopefully stand a better chance of being drawn in by test cricket than had they gone in on that first.

The reasoning behind it for it to be considered a 4 the ball has to touch the area inside boundary which doesnt happen if fielder touches the rope in motion of catching the ball.

Please keep doing cricket videos. Just like you did with baseball, you're getting me back into cricket, and it's awesome. Tough to watch games here in the US though, even if you can find a (usually illegal) stream, it's at some insane time like 2 AM. Though, that's why I got into cricket in the first place, when I was in college I pulled a lot of late nights and all nighters finishing big assignments and there was always cricket on the sketchy russian streaming sites I used, even when nothing else was.

I think that even if it had not been a No Ball the catch would still not have counted. If you look at what the fielder does as he is checking to see where his foot is (time 0:28) he has the ball in his hand, but his hand is pointed downwards. The ball is clearly touching the ground at this point and (in my opinion) he has not yet completed the catch. Law 33.3 "The act of making a catch shall start from the time when the ball first comes into contact with a fielder’s person and shall end when a fielder obtains complete control over both the ball and his/her own movement."

There are over 10 ways that the pitcher(bowler) can be called for a no-ball in cricket. The most common are : 1. The one in the video 2. Pitchers foot ahead for the line while pitching 3. Pitch lands more than once on the clay before reaching batsman 4. Failing to bowl with proper action (no submarine pitches) 5. Bouncing the ball higher than the batsman’s shoulder 6. Hitting the pitcher’s side of stump while pitching Plenty more no-ball rules in the rule book

the umpire yells "no-ball" and sticks their arm out sideways (same as you saw before the circles in the air) as soon as they judge a no-ball whether it's the front foot over the line or ball too high (or other things we won't go into for now), they also do the signals as you saw after the play is over (in cricket terms when "the ball is dead"), the original ball is pretty much a free hit but it's not really something you take into account as a batsman because it's too quick to react to the umpire's call and think to play a risky shot so you just play your shot normally (as normally as you can) but knowing that it's a no-ball just after you hit it you can start running even if you know the ball is going to be caught in the outfield, love your work

So many questions! If the fielder touches the boundary when catching a free hit, does it still count as 4 runs? Is this in addition to the 1 run penalty? (So 5 total?) Does it matter if the runners actually attempt to run or not? Can they still get run out if the boundary is touched and 4 run penalty applies or does that kill the play?

It's not only in t20 . It is applicable in all three format of cricket (one day, test, t20). A batsman can't be dismissed in no ball unless it's a run out Moreover it wouldn't also be out if it's a fair delivery because when the fielder checked his feet , he unintentionally touched the ball with the ground (from what I saw) . So it won't be out

I'm a cricket player and the umpires used to shout out "No ball" when it happened in the old days. This was to give the batter a chance to hit the ball and to alert the fielders as well. They don't do that anymore. The fielder has his eye on the ball, not on the umpire's arms. The keeper should have been shouting at him.

Still loving the cricket stuff. Jomboy out here doing Lord's work. 😉 A few rule clarifications for the uninitiated: 1) A waist-high "pitch" is a no-ball only if it was a full toss, i.e it reached the batsman before bouncing. Side note, waist-high pitches are ruled as no-balls because they are deemed unsafe for the batsmen. Sort of like high and inside pitches in baseball. Side side note, if a bowler does this a second time, they get "ejected" from the game, in that they cannot pitch anymore. 2) A batsman can't be out on a no-ball (except run out) in all three formats of the game, not just in T20.
@jrwntctv8091
@jrwntctv8091 2 жыл бұрын
They are not allowed to bowl again in the innings. This does not mean they are "ejected from the game" as they can still field (and bat, if their side fields first).
