Our best ever stand-up in my view. Wrote nearly all his own stuff. Clever, urbane and a nice man too.

This great comic would not be allowed on TV today. Someone further down on comments said this was sleazy and another said it was dated and cringing. I suspect these people belong to the easily offended brigade and are under the age of 25. Every comic bowed down to the genius of Mr Monkhouse who not only wrote thousands of jokes but had perfect timing. Never anything malicious in his performance and everyone in that audience knew they were in for a treat when Bob walked on stage. Thanks for uploading, I enjoyed every single joke.

I saw Bob in 1980 at a working men's club in the north east, he was so funny, but god how time and attitudes have change. The man was a comedy genius.

He was absolutely brilliant. Every joke is funny. The prawn balls joke is hilarious. Only Jackie Mason has the gift of writing brilliant material and delivering it with perfect timing. He would spend months perfecting his jokes. All of the great songwriters like Jerome Kern would write about 800 songs, all of great quality. Bob had that remarkable gift in comedy. The slick game show host was only a version of himself. Privately he was a nice and generous man who could not understand why many people disliked him. Tommy Cooper and Frankie Howard were naturally funny men, but were not clever like Bob. He came from the smart American style of comedy. As much as I love Frankie and Ken Dodd, whom I have seen live, I have to admire Bob's brilliance. I have Bob's and Jackie's DVDs.

I agree! But he wouldn't get away with a quarter of it nowadays!!! I do miss these old comedians! It's all too PC now I'm not saying that you have to be racist, or crude or swear for it to be funny but the greatest comedians are the ones that can be funny with and without it but comedians just can't be themselves now anyway! Bob monkhouse!! One of my favourites ❤

I was never a fan of Bob back in the day but I enjoyed this. I watched a program about how he was obsessed with jokes and he catalogued them all - he was dedicated and professional. He seemed to genuinely want to please the audience - really make them laugh - and not take it into the gutter.

I was born American 5 generations ago, but a cousin from a place I yearn to visit in Yorkshire, then the part called West Riding (the newer designations, just terms for politicians to cram their pockets) sent my Grand Dad audio cassettes of Bob. Why would two farmers/coal miners generation after generations stay in touch; roots and the love of family still generational pen pals, male and female. Two years ago when I tried to put these almost 50 yr. old recordings of Bob on CD, all the tapes played nothing but static & hiss. Still, I remember Bob in the mid '60s; part of my childhood remembered after watching this video. I'd forgotten about Bob until watching him on this site. RIP Mr. Monkhouse.

A brilliant set ! One of his very best. Indeed a master class in stand up comedy. A joke a second. How many other comedians past or present can also sing that well, not to mention dress that nicely for their audience? The late, great Bob Monkhouse still puts many others to shame.

Having had this show on VHS many years ago, I found it available on DVD and snapped it up. Picture quality's not great, but Sir Bob's on great form here. Some of the jokes have dated, but if you're old enough, they're still very funny. Wouldn't get away with half that routine now in today's sanitized PC world, and most of it was reasonably clean.

Great stuff! Incredibly there are comments relating to "would or would not be allowed today". TODAY??? As I get older it is becoming more apparent how the younger generation have not got the correct grasp of what life was like or what was "normal" a few decades ago. If that sounds like ancient history it isnt... when they grow a little older they will notice time fly by and their world that they knew will change also (hopefully!). So although me, my generation and older think we know how life was before us experience suggests we have got large parts wrong too in our understanding. All about rewriting history continually. Cheers Bob you were one of the very best!

Totally different.. Jimmy Carr is toilet humour.. Very good toilet humour but definitely in the blue category and not family friendly... Bobs material was family friendly for its day ( yes, was acceptable even as recent as the 80s/mid 90s) but Jimmy Carr deffo not for family viewing on a Saturday evening on itv or BBC at about 8pm on a saturday... Monkhouse was prime Saturday night family viewing. He'd have to tone it down a bit but still could I reckon.. Michael mcintyre is similar style I'd say, as he seems to fit family viewing and similar style, Jimmy Carr is gunshot jokes, one liners and some double entendres, but monkhouse was a master at puns and double entendre, and could tell a story too. Jimmy Carr has similarity with audience participation though, and keeping an audience in their palm, and all British comedians have wit and sarcasm, with a pinch of irony it's just what we do.

All the greats are gone now, well, with the exception of Stan Boardman, Chubby Brown, Billy Pierce, Jim Davidson, Jimmy Cricket, Mick Millar . Real comics who are naturally funny and don't give a flying fuck about PC or being educational. They just entertain!!
