The issue with steel is not the patterning it’s the fact it doesn’t pack a punch like lead
@markhuskey67574 жыл бұрын

Lead kills more ethically. Apparently lead messes up our waters even though it’s readily found in nature. Does that make sense at all.
@medicatedflowers8214 жыл бұрын
ReptilianX Lol yes it does accrue naturally but not in small pellets that ducks and other animals can eat, I don’t see a problem myself used steel years for ducks and have shot some ducks at great ranges it’s about putting the shot in the head not the body
@jmkhenka4 жыл бұрын
@@reptilianxlol934 the issue with lead shot (metalic lead) is not that it dissolves into water. The problem is that many birds eat stones from the bottom of waterways, and they thuss eat lead. Lead is later found further up in the food chain. In sweden the main argument is that birds of prey have stronger acids (they dissolve alot more stuff then we do, for instance) and they die of lead poisoning.

Charlie, have you ever considered making a long form video of the beautiful landscapes FSC has recorded over the years? It could included soothing music for insomniacs or serve as a stump to explain the conservation efforts in various regions for various game and non-game animals. Regardless I do so enjoy what FSC shares. Thank you so much!

It’s not that often we see rabbits any more in West Yorkshire and I must admit it’s a bit sad to say the least. Am 57 now and was brought up with ferrets and nets and running dogs. Many happy days out on permission with a few friends long live the rabbit.

Shooting for 60 years and only since the introduction of steel shot have I seen so many wounder duck struggling in the water near my part of the Lough. my father used Eley grand Prix 5s and never lost a bird. Last bird of the season and it had ONE pickle in it,s head any other time and it would have had a couple of lead, other birds we picked up had broken wings and very much alike until dispatched, as you can guess I detest wounding any animal and using steel shot.

Stop worrying about steel shot. I used steel #2 for everything from teal, wood ducks, mallards, pheasant, quail, grey squirrels, rabbits, canadian geese to mute swan. I recommend steel BB for geese & mute swan. But at 45 yards, steel #2s will take any game down. They even work on coyotes at close range.

Here in the States we can use other kinds of non toxic shot, such as bismuth and polymer/tungsten. Will such alternatives be allowed in the UK? Regardless, California has gone completely lead free last year. For the smaller birds and rabbits steel works fine from my experience. For the larger species like pheasants I use bismuth. With large game with rifles I have come to prefer copper alloy bullets over lead.

Great video as usual the guys who was hunting BAD practice need educating. People like that give antis the bullets to fire at hunters pardon the pun. I started at a very young age and if your using a rifle if it's on its bi pod bolt open magazine out shot gun broken so every one knows your firearm is safe. If the police did get involved they should make them go with a keeper or experienced shooter to educate them. When he shot in to the wood I was thinking what if there Is a Walker or a deer. Where was the back stop ffs. It's not right to have a gun it's a privilege. Stay safe folks fingers crossed we will be out soon keeping the fox numbers down. Stay safe guy.👍

I would disagree with the idea that owning a gun is not a right. The right to arms was enshrined into English common law with the Magna Carta. Subsequent governments and court findings have greatly eroded the right, but it still remains. The English common law was the inspiration for the USA's 2nd Amendment. The belief at the time in both England and what became the United States, was that the right to own arms was a natural right given by God and no ruler had the right to restrict it. Obviously things have changed politically, but the idea of a free man being allowed to do what he wants and own what ever he wants as long as he does not harm anyone else is still a powerful one. As for the bad examples from the video that behavior seems more the result of lack of education. Ignorance rather than idiocy if you will. The propper thing to do in my mind is to separate the young men from each other to stop them from reinforcing their bad habits. Then as individuals introduce them to small groups of more experienced shooters that can show them how to do things correctly. Young men need role models and teachers to correct ignorance, not an arse kicking.
@justinpaffvett33674 жыл бұрын
I agree with the not giving the kick in the arse and they do need educating. As for the right to own a gun yes I agree any normal person should be allowed to own what he wants. As if that is going to happen in the uk I would like to see hand guns come back for pistol club shooting instead your only allowed certain long barrelled pistols in northern ireland you can own a 9mm glock on mainland uk you cant. If you feel so strongly about it why dont you start a petition to have gun laws relaxed for legal gun owners. Cheers👍

Forgive me if I’m missing critical information, but wouldn’t rabbit come under “pest” and therefore not be subject to the game/lead shot issue? Things have gone quiet from the orgs but shouldn’t they be aiming for a distinction between game and pest, commercial food and personal pot??
@manofkentcatapultsgunsando50694 жыл бұрын
@@danp6755 Thats an interesting point
@colinjohnston54654 жыл бұрын
@@danp6755 if we have sufficiently effective alternatives which are the same price or lower than lead why wouldn'tyou use a non-lead alternative? As I understand it we still need to get the biodegradable wads / shot cup right to ensure barrels are protected. If we get that sorted then steel is sort of okay in most situations unless you are shooting at ranges in excess of 35 metres.
@danp67554 жыл бұрын
Colin Johnston I don’t believe that “sort of ok” is ok at all. Yes, a bio wad/cup should be mandatory to reduce plastics to the environment, and I completely agree that on a commercial scale where game is processed and sold to the wider public we must maintain that market, however I feel that game for personal consumption should be shot in the most humane and sensible way the individual sees fit. I see no sense in stipulating non toxics for pests. As with any blanket ban, there will be situations where previous alternatives are better. The shooting organisations should be fighting for a sensible solution and viable scenarios for non toxics to find a middle ground.

that's funny... in the US they tell us how much freedom we have all the time, but we can't even touch a vehicle with a loaded long gun
@Aikibiker14 жыл бұрын
That depends what part of the USA you are in. I have several times shot legally from inside and around vehicles in FL and CA. As part of training classes and competitions. FL also specifically in the law allows people in the state to carry loaded weapons inside cars with very few restrictions, aimed mostly at safety. Don't want a loaded pistol rattling around without something to protect/cover the trigger. However having that same pistol in case, holster(with retention device) or your glove box is perfectly legal. FL only restricts shooting alongside and across roadways. Mainly as an anti poaching measure.

Simon Whitehead's piece is interesting but not very scientific. No information about comparative numbers of pellets with the different loads or penetration (of the back board). The pattern plate test is worthless unless you know where the pattern is centred and the "plate" simply is not big enough for that. The comparison of the strike wounds on the rabbits is equally unscientific as there is no information as to range or whether the rabbits were presenting comparable targets, crossing, quartering or whatever. Did he say what choke he was using? If not another flaw. What about doing a proper test along the lines of Dave Carrie's videos, where the range is measured accurately, penetration is assessed, we know the loads and the chokes used etc.? Otherwise the information is relatively worthless and anecdotal.
