Fierce fighting on Russia-Ukraine border signals new front in war

A large section of a ten storey apartment block has collapsed in the Russian city of Belgorod - killing at least seven people and injuring 17. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Russian officials say it was hit by a Soviet-era missile, launched by Ukraine and shot down by Russia.
Over the border, Ukraine's military chief says his forces are doing all they can to hold the line in the Kharkiv region, where Russia has launched a major assault.
Today, Moscow said it had seized another four villages there, on top of five it announced yesterday.
By stepping up attacks towards Kharkiv, Russia could force Ukrainian troops to divert from the east to the northeast, weakening their defensive line in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which is already under huge strain after recent attacks on the cities of Avdiivka and Chasiv Yar.

If you include all types of aid especially financial aid Europe combined has spent much more than the US on support for Ukraine and its brave people. Should also be noted that when US Congress voted $61 billion this is mostly to cover cost of brand new equipment for the US Army to replace the 20-40 year old equipment and ammo its sending to Ukraine from stocks. Not only is the new stuff of vastly higher spec and vastly more expensive than the items sent but the sent missiles for instance are within a few years of end of shelf live so US Army saved cost to scrap them.

This russo-ukrainian war is pointless in the sense that even if Russia (contrary to the assumption) manages to hold the occupied territories, they still have not managed to win them. According to international law (UN Declarations) it is forbidden to annex other country's territories, so these areas will never be recognized as Russian territories except by Russia itself (and possibly North Korea). The only way for Russia is for the UN Declarations to be rewritten or for Ukraine to voluntarily give Russia these areas (none of this will happen). The territories will continue to be Ukrainian illegally annexed by Russia which will therefore always have sanctions and trade boycotts from the West (formerly Russia's best customers). There will also always be fighting in the areas so Russia will always need to have a lot of its military resources placed in these areas. It will be very expensive in the long run for Russia to illegally try to keep the territories, and the question is whether the Kremlin (and the Russian people) have both the will and the ability to pay this price.

You are correct. I live in Ukraine (in the west-central part) and am ethnically Ukrainian. My grandfather fought against the Soviets in WW2, and my great-grandfather fought against the Soviets in the Polish-Soviet War and the Russian Empire in WW1. The western media lies to western publics, but that does NOT mean the pro-Russian media is somehow telling the honest truth. Most of all, the Russians and Russia-lovers deceive themselves, thinking we are really all just one big Russian family. As you can see even from my own family history, this is not true. Western Ukraine has always hated the Russians bitterly; it doesn't matter what the name of our country has been, or what government ruled Russia. Putin, Communist, Czar...Now, many Ukrainians, in the centre and even the south and a bit into the east of the country have got used to independence, to having their own country. Young generations who grew up entirely Ukrainian in language and identity do not want to be second-class citizens under Russian occupation. I believe Russia may win many more big victories on the battlefield, but like you say that's not the same as winning the territory. People will keep resisting, arms and explosives will keep coming in, even if only a trickle, to do guerilla activities, assassinations etc. They will not get their Russian empire back.

UN declarations were trampled on every time it suited the West, it makes no sense for others to adhere to them when the West does not respect them. Part of the centuries-old territory of my country was occupied, the West recognized it as a state and overrode all UN declarations. Kosovo is Serbia! Long live Russia in the fight against the Nazis!
