Immigrant parents have sacrificed A LOT for their children's future and that's why they have such high expectations from their kids. Love your mom she's so sweet
@MinhTran-ib8zx3 жыл бұрын
@@user-fj4pd1zx4s that’s not true. Do you realize how hard immigrants have to work to provide their children with better futures? There’s a reason why immigrants are the hardest working in America. They work the hardest jobs and try to give their children the best future they can. There’s a reason many immigrant’s children are very successful, because of the life their parents worked so hard to provide for them. Don’t make that generalization that immigrants don’t work hard, when they are the hardest workers ever.
@Jyeah893 жыл бұрын
yes. so many earn minimum wage, and don't buy nice things for themself. they don't eat out at restaurants, they do not order in, they do not travel, because of the minimum wage. i know so many like this. its a life of discipline, hardwork and saying no to immediate gratification.
@parisadian22763 жыл бұрын
@@user-fj4pd1zx4s Immigration is extremely hard. Learning a new language, moving away from your family, a new culture,...and yet you need to adjust yourself with a new pace in life.Now many move with kids,so have to focus on them rather than working 60 hrs a week.It's really one of those things that only people who went through it can understand.
@parisadian22763 жыл бұрын
@@user-fj4pd1zx4s I complete;y understand your point of view. Part of what you're saying is to take "responsibility"in life. Parents and kids no matter what they're going through. And that's correct.Parents can encourage their kids to become successful like Dr.Rabah or continue to have a minimum wage job for the rest of their lives. It's 100% their call. But immigrant parents do push their kids cause they think it's their "responsibility" they chose to bring their kids into this country :)
@parisadian22763 жыл бұрын
@@user-fj4pd1zx4s And please don't get me wrong. I'm 100% against emotionally blackmailing kids. but it doesn't seem like her mom did that, she was being supportive and encouraging to her kids:)

As a Mexican immigrant, I completely understand. The standards were sky high and I'm grateful my parents saw the potential in me.

I come from an immigrant family as well and I believe that it’s very toxic for parents to say things like bringing a B grade home will not be accepted. Or any result other than an A is looked down upon. Some students struggle with grades despite working really hard and that’s how I was too as a student and the toxic Asian culture affected my mental health as well as my performance at school. There’s nothing wrong aiming for the best and doing your best but mocking a lower letter grade is not okay.
@sonamm11372 жыл бұрын
agree. I think it’s good to have high expectations if your child can handle it. For them to be struggling and depressed that they aren’t doing well is not okay.

Thanks for sharing this video, I'm glad KZbin recommended your video today :). I'd love to get your (or comment readers) thoughts on something. While it's brilliant to see how you and your siblings thrive, a lot of children are crippled (metaphorically) by the weight of high expectations of parents, and do not rise to the occasion as you and your siblings did. I am curious as to how you and your siblings navigated your own feelings around the weight of expectations (perhaps fear of consequence, disappointment, etc.), would you be able to share? Sometimes I wonder, is managing these expectations is a lot simpler for children who are intellectually/academically gifted or intrinsically smart; or what qualities from the parent/child dynamic determine actual success (as opposed to developing psychological trauma in the child).

Moms should raise kids in order to be happy, not successful. Success is a notion that comes later in life, during the first steps happiness and self respect are the most important. Success comes after and is not a high-priority (so as high grades at school). I think that is a better subject/title! Your mom looks adorable!
@GhadaOthmani3 жыл бұрын
I have a lot of respect for your mom and for you. I have been raised the way your mom raised you and I am also a doctor now. However I would never do the same for my children. Telling your kid that getting and A is not an option beacause there's A+ is simply wrong, harmful and unhealthy. We love our parents but we have to admit that they are humans ans they make mistakes, one big mistake is judging your own kid by the marks he gets. We are raising humans, not robots. And sucess is not about how prestigious is the position you get to and how much money you make at the end of the month. Success is about what kind of human being you beacome.

I am a Palestinian-Canadian with older parents who were most certainly raised in a very conservative family in Palestine, but I do not agree with setting my standards to getting " ALL A+'s and A's" ---all or nothing. Yes, school is a TOP priority and excellent grades are absolutely ESSENTIAL to succeed and further your education. BUT, I know many people who have gotten a mix of A's and B's and so on...and are successful Physicians, Pharmacists, Dentists, Lawyers, Engineers, Business people etc today in North America. I think we are human beings...and sometimes we come across a specific course or subject that we may struggle in. Regardless, I would not be disappointed or want to instil fear in my child if he/she makes a mistake in school or doesn't achieve that A+ on some occasions. That can create a lot of pressure and anxiety/stress for someone. I can also tell you..that when you go through the medical school admissions process...each Medical School has a LIMITED number of seats for the incoming class...and usually they get 1000's of applications....if they can only accept 500 students...then 500 will be denied admission and MANY of those students are those A+/A students. So, good grades are NOT the only key to success. There is work ethic, common sense (which I can tell you some medical professionals do not have), community involvement, critical thinking, emotional intelligence etc.. Anyways, just my thoughts.
