Grey... has a therapist? What kind of THERAPIST is he that he lets Grey DO these things? Did he get his degree from a university that Grey owns? Did Grey just find his old college buddy and say "you're my therapist now, here's money!"? Or (more realistically) does the AUTHOR just have no idea how THERAPY works?!

As The Dom himself put it, "this author doesn't know what words mean", nor does she have a basic comprehension of what a healthy BDSM relationship is, so why would she know a thing about therapy?

Could be that it was court ordered since grey is a dangerous sociopath who probably did something to get himself in legal trouble, but since he's rich he only got court ordered therapy. That's how I'd fix it at least.

So, his ex sub goes crazy & wants revenge? That sounds to me like a woman who didn't like being punished (just like anna) and thought christian was gonna fall in love with her after awhile (just like anna) but didn't & tossed her aside feeling abused & used. I don't think that's "crazy" i mean I guess it is but its also kind of sad..damn how dark

Your voice almost makes these books sound intelligent, like they're purposely written to showcase an unhealthy relationship between two human beings with screws loose. Too bad it's just a mediocre author's uninformed and ludicrous sexual fantasy with a "plot" taped onto it. This could not have been easy, The Dom. I appreciate your sacrifice in reviewing these books for us. We appreciate you greatly.

An hour later after watching this I just had a thought - if Grey doesn't like using condoms and he doesn't want kids, WHY THE FUCK DID HE NOT HAVE A VASECTOMY?! Sure, they can fail (rarely) and a woman can get pregnant anyway, but men should be JUST as responsible for birth control as women. You don't want a kid? Go get snipped. It's easier for men to do that then it is for women. Just ask pretty much any childfree by choice woman - for instance, most doctors will give a man, married or not, a vasectomy without comment. But if the woman is married and wants her tubes tied most doctors require the husband to sign a permission slip. Not to mention that recovery time is a lot quicker for men and it's easier to get reversed should he change his mind. Granted, Ana should insist he use condoms anyway because of STDs - Grey's been a LOT more sexually active than her and could have something he's not admitting to. But if the dude is that concerned about making babies he should just go in for the snip and not force Ana onto the pill.

With a minimal rewriting effort, one could turn this into a psychological horror story. You only need to change Anna's perception of Grey into that of a normal human being and suddenly it's about a young woman who gets stalked and abused by a wealthy and powerful sociopath,who can buy his way into the police department, doctor's offices etc. And if she tries to expose him, he hauls her off into the psychiatric ward. Just the thought of it is scary. Yikes.

It is a fantasy. He is a rich man they can "fix", the abuse is just the cost or struggle to get the "dream outcome". Besides this type of literature is literally porn, just pornoliterature instead of pornographic. It is for women to be sexually stimulated by, not for deep plot, and porn for men doesn't have better morals or plots either.
@tenebrae3754
@tenebrae3754 6 жыл бұрын
Carewolf If it were just porn and be treated as such, I would be okay with that, well not really, but at least the "book" would be self aware. But that is not the case. These books as well as the movies are easily accessible to the wide public and are advertised heavily, I have never seen so much hype around a porn ever. AND! (and this pisses me off the most) the "author" stated that she sees this thing as a love story. A LOVE STORY, REALLY?! I'm sorry to be this salty over this, I'm normally more composed and I understand that you are just reasoning and I don't blame you for that. This is one of the only subjects that can get me this agitated, and that is partly because I and some very close friends of mine are also aspiring authors and it personally pains me to see such things considered as "good literature".

Cassandra I actually read Twilight. Edward never forced Bella to eat. At first he forgot she needed to eat so frequently, so he made a point to give her an opportunity. The exception being in Port Angeles, but he admits it’s to keep him from hunting her attackers and he thinks she’s going into shock. It wasn’t a pattern and he sure as hell never commented on her body. Edward did cross the line a few times in regards to control, but he was willing to listen to Bella and trust her judgment. He changed his behavior because of her objections. And that’s the difference between a guy messing up and a guy who is abusive.

7:41 Yes, you are correct. As a vagina owner who loves sugar, I want my sugar out of my vagina, where it won't cause a yeast infection, thank you very much. 11:17 So, I'm not a contraceptive expert, but does she really need the shot AND the pill? Depo-provera is 94% effective and birth control pills are 91% effective when taken correctly. Also, I don't think doctors just carry pills on them. When I was on the pill, my doctor had to prescribe them to me, then I had to go to the pharmacy and get them myself every three months. 12:42 In the wake of MeToo, I hope this doesn't need to be said, but, guys: If your girlfriend is being sexually harassed or abused by her boss, offer her support, understanding, and encouragement. Don't try to get him fired, don't tell her she should quit, don't pick a fight with her boss, and DEFINITELY don't try what Christian Grey does. 15:56 Ah yes, all Doms are villains of the week on Criminal Minds. You are so correct E.L. James, so spot on, this is how ABSOLUTELY EVERY DOM IN THE BDSM COMMUNITY IS 100%. (I'm being sarcastic, BTW). 18:18 Has this idiot ever heard of therapist-client privilege? Not only should the therapist not be going to his client's parties and messing with him, but he also shouldn't be divulging his darkest secrets to his client's girlfriend. 19:36 So I'm told that his helicopter crashes over Mt. St. Helens...what business does he have at Mt. St. Helens? It's a national monument owned by the federal government (for now). There's a geological institute there, studying the volcano, I thought Grey did random finance stuff? In fact, what is Grey's business? Wikipedia says he's an "entrepreneur", so what does he sell? At least with Tony Stark's bottomless checkbook, we know he's a former weapons manufacturer who had a contract with the U.S. Armed Forces, who also holds many doctorates in various scientific fields. WHAT THE FUCK DOES CHRISTIAN GREY DO? 19:40 HE CRASHES OVER A SEMI-ACTIVE VOLCANO WITHOUT A SCRATCH ON HIM? I've been to Mt. St. Helens before, if he crashed over the mountain, he should be more covered in ash than if he dumped a bowl of ashes on himself on Ash Wednesday. WHAT? 20:03 Is it really wise to fly low over a semi-active volcano? I know it hasn't erupted since 1980, but there was steam escaping the mountain in as recent as 2008.

Luna Gale I feel like calling it "fanficcy" is an insult to the fanfic writers who do care about their work and aren't complete idiots who do little to no research on what they write, but like...it just looks like a bad fanfic, where something dramatic happens, like, super dramatic, then it's done with next chapter. It's kind of like My Immortal (sorry I'm bringing it up, but it's true). Voldemort would appear in a scene with his Death Eaters at a My Chemical Romance concert, and the next chapter they're all back in the Great Hall with Dumbledore having put up Avril Lavigne posters. They're never connected, they never build upon each other, they just happen and then it goes back to the status quo. Also, tbh, I'm a proud Washingtonian and I have a LOT of opinions about how this film portrays my fair state. And it seems I'm not the only one, Washington State University Vancouver has an article dispelling factual inaccuracies in the first book. Although they later invited E.L. James to the campus, and then gave the film studio WSU merchandise to use as props.

Despite what EL James thinks Christian Grey is the real villain of this series. But not the interesting and entertaining type of villain where you hate what they do and know they're evil but you like and are interested in them as characters. No he's just the type of villain you want killed off the moment they appear.

How the Hell is Christian NOT the villain of this series. It’s 50 Shades of too late to attempt “love redeems” with this character though honestly you can’t even consider this “love redeems” as Ana doesn’t even try to get Grey to see how much of an obsessive stalker psycho creep he is. Bella Swan has more of a backbone than this character and Ana is a rip off of her.
@DonnaBrooks
@DonnaBrooks 5 жыл бұрын
Even Robert Pattinson said there was something wrong with Bella for wanting a relationship with Edward and that there was DEFINITELY something wrong with him. I just saw a video of him saying it in an interview. I love your description of Christian: .... "how much of an obsessive stalker psycho creep he is." I think women are just so longing for romance that if you tell them a story (even a really shitty one that's just a veneer for porn) about an abusive relationship between a weak female character and a handsome, successful man, then they will accept it as a "romance" and a "love story". She's infatuated and lacks self-esteem, and sadly, that describes a huge number of young women who flock to this hog slop. It just speaks to how twisted our society is that the author called this a love story, when it is the antithesis of real love.

There are many suspicions based on E.L. James' behavior in the past that she is more like Christian than Ana, and that she glorifies abuse in her novels because she is possibly an abuser herself. It would explain a LOT.

Right now we are in the middle of an anti-sexual harassment movement with many young woman coming out about being assaulted or even raped by men in positions of power who used their power to get away with what they did. Yet that the same time woman are flocking to see a movie that romanticizes that very same idea.

This is a bit long, and personal, but I really felt the need to say it. I discovered your channel fairly recently; about 2 months ago to be more precise, and boy do I wish I found you sooner. As a person who's been sexually abused in the past, and also happens to be religiously involved with the bdsm community, I always struggled with the thought that I will never be able to move on and enjoy my life the way I want to in a healthy way. These kinds of thoughts have been especially troublesome for me lately, but watching you tear a new one into these absolutely horrible books has been strangely therapeutic for me. Seeing someone ACTUALLY look and react angrily towards the abusive behavior displayed by Christian Grey is so relieving to me. I feel like I'm not crazy for feeling so massively insulted by these books and how misrepresenting they are. Other reviewers usually just make jokes or briefly mention the abuse (which is fine, these books are hilariously bad) but I always felt like they didn't quite hit the mark. Despite how mind numbing it probably was to read this series, I hope that knowing my experience watching these videos displays at least a bit of a silver lining for you. Keep doing what you're doing, and I cannot WAIT for the next upcoming videos!♥♥♥

BTW, I hated these books for all sorts of reasons and it's like the awful was so rampant I almost forgot the FORCED BIRTH CONTROL part of the book. Hormonal birth control can be crazy harmful on a woman's body and is a medical decision she and she alone needs to make but of fucking course E L James thinks it's "cute" that scumbag Grey is so controlling he thinks he's got ownership over his girlfriend's body and can force her into a medical decision all on his own. GROSS. (Slight spoiler for everyone: just wait until the harmful romanticization of trying to fix and love your abuser gives way for the harmful romanticization of marrying your abuser who you've known for like 3 months).

It's a real danger that it's so popular with no one really talking about the abusive nature of it (the dom is the first person i've heard talk about how bad it is from a non- writing point of view i.e how it's written rather than what is written).

Simona Katsman were you not watching The Dom's review? He outlines the part specifically where Grey, simply because he hates using condoms, books Ana an appointment with a doctor to get a depo shot and then makes her switch to the shot from the pills without her permission or input. He alone decides what birth control they use even when it's all hormonal BC on Ana's body and because they're idiots who switch through like 3 forms of birth control in a few months and keep forgetting about follow up appointments (spoilers again) yes, she gets pregnant. (And then turns out getting pregnant by your abuser is even MORE emotionally crippling and dangerous).

Don't trust the New York Times Bestseller list. It's not actually how many books are sold, it's how many _select_ bookstores _anticipate_ will be sold, and since it updates weekly, seeing "#1 NYT Bestseller" on a book cover looks impressive but really means next to nothing.
@BadWolf739
@BadWolf739 6 жыл бұрын
Getting #1 NYT Bestseller isn't difficult. Maintaining it is. If your book got that title really all it means is that it is highly anticipated and you had good marketing done. However if you can manage to stay on the list for two weeks or more then its a sign of good book sales (generally signifying reader satisfaction). If a book can boast, "six weeks on the NYT Bestseller list" or something similar then it's impressive. If it just got on the list it's amongst about fifty percent of all books.
@gunsandammo92

The New York Times monitors certain bookstores and if one book is sold passed a certain threshold it goes on the list. #1 is impressive at least but maintaining the #1 slot like someone said shows that people kept buying it. In regards to quality. Look up a book called valley of the dolls. 1966 this book was HUGE. Think of it like 50 shades of that time. People loved it or at least it sold a lot.

You complaining about the book is far more entertaining than the actual book. Love your style, Dom. P.S I've always been confused at this book being sold as a female fantasy since the main female never seems to act like a real person is really just a receiver for male abuse and power-play. This seems more like a male fantasy for me. "I can do whatever shit I want and she still wants to have sex with me" sounds rather appealing if you have no morals while "No matter what I do, I have no power or rights and can't control my sexual urges" sounds like a living hell.
@simonakatsman974
@simonakatsman974 2 жыл бұрын
I think some critics have talked about how the fantasy is not about power but lack thereof. They get a hot man and a rich husband simply by existing. They don't have to make choices and still get everything they want. There's also a vicarious sense of bring entitled to whatever you want and at the same time still be a good person because you don't actively pursue the wealth. As for the sex, I doubt a lot of women even today consider having sexual agency a good thing. This book is popular with audiences that probably think that the only valid sex is between two committed adults in a serious relationship. Which is why the main man wanting to marry the main girl is the primary fantasy. This man isn't shying away from commitment- he pursues it. And again, you don't need to make choices. It's a fantasy that doesn't pressure women into mandatory agency- the kind of agency a woman needs to survive in the 21st century. It's gross and insidious, but the truth

I’m a survivor of abuse. There’s no way I’d be able to make it through reading these books because the romanticization of this kind of relationship would probably mess me up. There is something cathartic and comforting about listening to Dom vent about how horrible this relationship is and particularly about how Grey’s abuse as a child doesn’t justify his mistreatment of others. There are still some days when I kind of gaslight myself into having nostalgia for the how simple everything seemed when someone else had taken away my agency. I’m saving some of these videos for those times so that I can listen to a stranger with a funny accent passionately shout about how not ok abuse is. To me, Dom threads the needle really well with his tone. He’s angry at Grey, frustrated with Ana, furious at James, and still really gentle and compassionate to real-world survivors. Thanks Dom. I’m glad I found this channel.

The reason I watch reviews of movies I don't see is b/c I'm interested in the cultural impact of books and films, but I don't want to waste time (and certainly don't want to spend money) on garbage that is polluting the minds of so many people. It's disturbing that the first book was so popular. How many young women internalized the message that this is a "romance" and "a love story" (according to the author)? What a horrible message to give young women: Ignore one red flag after another about that guy b/c he's handsome and a billionaire and you'll have a happily ever after together. In truth, people who don't heed warning signs end up in a NIGHTMARE, not a fairy tale. Sometimes they even end up dead.

Long, long ago, I read this whole "series" on fanfiction.net when it was in the Twilight archive. And what little I remember tells me that there is more sex in the published version than the actual fanfiction version. Also, I now really wish I wasn't eating ice cream during the review.
@Kintsugi23

Fanfiction.net didn't allow explicit sex scenes at the time (not sure if they do now) so there were essentially 2 versions of Master of the Universe: the Fanfiction.net version which contained only implied sex, and the version on EL James' website that had the explicit scenes. This is also part of why some of the sex scenes feel weird and out of place, as some sex scenes got shoehorned into chapters of the "clean" version.

I don't know if anyone has noticed, but in both Twilight and Fifty Shades, the male lead's rival (Jacob/José) is an ethnic minority (José=Latino, Jacob=Native American) who doesn't seem to understand the meaning of consent (both characters try to force themselves on the female lead).

Sabrina Loizides-Merideth i worked at a cafe and am an avid reader so when i noticed that so many people were reading these books i was curious and decided to see what it was all about. I think i got about 10 pages in and was horrified but i thought maybe it gets better so i forced myself to read about 30 pages more before i had to stop while i still had some braincells left. I've read some bad books and some worse fan fictions but this was honestly one of the worst stories that wasn't written by a non-english speaker that i have ever read.

Another issue with these books, is that books don't really have an age warning or anything? Or even display a warning? I actually read the first book out of curiosity over the media storm, when I was 12 years old,( note I stole them from my mum, not bought them in a shop. side note: MUM WHY) and didn't have a comprehensive understanding of what sex even was (beyond biological function (eg. penis--> vagina = babies ) It was pretty much my first ever reading of pornography. When I read the synopsis of the back it states no warning of any weird shit, my 12 year old brain just though grey was from the summary so dude that was a bit weird, and traumatized. (I think the blurp just stated that grey had 'dark secrets; lol you're telling me.) Luckily, I am old enough to know far, far better about toxic relationships and sex, but as a first influence, It was probably the worst influence a 12 year old girl could have. ESPECIALLY when it's some abusive/messed up version of BDSM. One that note, on the list scene where they 'review' the contract, I remember going down the bdsm stuff, with no fucking idea what any of it was, and being super clueless,lol (thank god I didn't have open access to the internet ) And when the first sex scene did occur, i was really confused why grey was so obsessed Anna was a virgin lol, and when the sex scene did start, it took me ages too realised what they were actually doing. (sex) as it held none of the words one would associate with the act (eg names of genitals ) due to shitty writing. It was also the first introduction to oral sex in the scene afterwards, and that absolutely horrified me once I found out what they were doing. The term 'popsicle' is forever ruined for me, thank god I'm English and the common term is lolly. tbh the american lingo in the book really confused me as it was also the first american set book i read so the pants/trousers stuff confused me and I didnt realise that americans call pants/knickers 'panties' which was a super funny word to me, so any time the word came up, it made me laugh out loud and lose all concentration, and ruin any scene that was occurring. I still can't take the word seriously, especially after I realised from cinemasins that most americans don't pronounce the 't' in the word, and call them 'pannies' or some variant. Either way, it's still the quickest way to get me to laugh.

pingu ferit I don’t think most books have an age warning, and this is coming from someone who’s read a lot of romance novels, most of which are ten times better than this piece of crap. It’s kept in the adult romance section in bookstores, as far away from the kids section as possible. But this does touch on something that Dom mentioned in the summary of the first book, that women read them freely in public and around their families and he found it ludicrous that this was acceptable, given the content.

I find that Americans don't pronounce the 't'? there might be some variants as there are lots of accents in America, but in england we seem to emphasize the t far more.

Sounds about right - From what I gathered from the CinemaSins version of this movie. I laughed a ton because of these movies... All thanks to Jeremy and his crew, none thanks to E. L.'s books/movies. With that said, thanks for this video, Dominic. I am awaiting the follow-up video with glee (Although, I must admit, I m a bit horrified that you have to go through this. Let's hope there's enough brainfood on your list to make you feel a little better). Praise the sarcasm in this video, though. Continuing my ace!Anna reading from the last plot summary, the "fighting and then getting overcome with lust" thing is actually because she's identifying rage with sexual attraction. Because the physiological reaction of fight, flee, and fuck are very similar. And misidentifying something else as sexual attraction is common, but obviously less extreme, before people release they're ace. Then she rationalizes Grey's behavior it to resolve her cognitive dissonance. And while Grey's ex being someone trying to kill their abuser is a good interpretation, it doesn't explain why she targets Anna. But she's actually a paid actress, because the timing is just too convenient.

Wait, he was flying low in his helicopter when both engines caught fire and he made an emergency landing? How low was he, 5 feet in the air? Might be an odd point to nitpick, but if a helicopter is flying at what would usually be called "low", meaning 30-60 feet, engine failiure would KILL YOU! Emergency landings with helicopters are ONLY possible when they are high in the air. Where they can use the helicopter equivalent to gliding (autorotation). Which is why you don't fly low with a helicopter unless you have no other choice. And unless you are SAR or police, you don't!
