Meyer did actually write some interesting characters she just lacks the skill to get it across or the wherewithal to know when to present certain things as negative. Take Edward. He's a telepath so he knows everything someone is thinking. He spent the first decade or whatever of his life drinking the blood of humans who were about to/ did commit terrible crimes, and justified his murder of those people as such. But in doing so, he would obviously have such a god complex, deciding who lived and died. He eventually stopped because he didn't want to kill anymore, but that's such an interesting idea l. Now in the books, he has, for years, been surrounded by teenage girls fawning all over him and teenage boys being jealous, so he hears all of that unfiltered adoration or hate knowing that he wouldn't be able to fit in with any of them anyway, so he gets a superiority complex and you see that with how he treats Bella- as a child because compared to him, every teenager he meets is. If he could read Bella's mind, I don't think he would have been half as interested in her, he would either have killed her or just left Forks because by knowing her thoughts she's just as vapid as the rest of them but extra tasty. Being a telepath, no one has secrets from him. He isn't allowed a boundary because he can hear everyone's unfiltered thoughts about him, so I'm sure he would eventually slip into not thinking boundaries were important at all. So now you've got a character with a god complex, a superiority complex, and a complete lack of understanding of boundaries because of it all. What a fascinating character this could have been if Meyer had gotten Bella to make Edward realise these things and be a better person because of it.

9:30 While the lack of boundaries does make sense for his character(being a telepath does kind of remove majority of boundaries between people, seeing as you can hear every private thought they have without their consent), it should be treated as a negative. Honestly, people keep saying Edward is boring but if his character was approached properly it would be a lot more engaging to watch him. Not sure how awkward that would have been. Immortality and shared burdens might mean more than being on different sides of a war where everyone else is long-dead. And Jasper left the Civil War just to be thrown into another one, so maybe that gave him a certain perspective on war itself. Then again, the American Revolution vampire was singing the same song against the Volturi as he did the Brits. But oppressive hierarchies exist no matter what you eat. One of the most baffling things about the Twilight franchise is that every single vampire who isn't Edward has a much, much more compelling background than him. It's almost as if Meyer threw in some murder so his past wouldn't be completely uninteresting compared to, again, literally every single other vampire.
@pedrovallefin8406
@pedrovallefin8406 2 жыл бұрын
I feel like he was made to be uninteresting. Partly to match with Bellas blandness, and partly because hes the archetype of "the Beast". You know, the cool asshole that has done horrible things becomes better after falling in love with some beautiful girl (nevermind that Edward dosent really change all that much though the story).So, because he has to fit the archetype he cant have a particular complex story like the others do.
@noelbernabe8704
@noelbernabe8704 2 жыл бұрын
I honestly don't believe Edward is uninteresting. I think his backstory as a mind reading vampire who went on a vigilante period is as interesting as anyone else. Really the difference is we got 4 books and 5 movies focused on him, to the point where he was ramemd down our throats. THat in contast to characters like Carlisle or Jasper getting 1 chapter exploring their history. If Twilight focused on Carlisle instead of Edward for 4 straight books, we'd probably see people argue Edward was more interesting and deserved more focus. I think the only character that is legitimately uninteresting is Bella... but that's sort of by design. Lead female protagonists in YA fiction are designed to be blank slates, so teenage girls can self insert themselves.

I dunno, dying in a pandemic and not getting the chance to join the army to fight in WW1 is pretty interesting. It also explains to some extent why he's stuck in a permanent state of sulk -- though he quite literally dodged a bullet (and mustard gas) by not joining in the fighting, there was still a sense of extreme patriotic duty for men to enlist and a social stigma against those who didn't. That, and it seems like he embodies the nihilism of the Lost Generation, although I doubt any of this was intentional

One of the BEST things Meyer added when writing midnight sun is that in the baseball scene when James, Laurent, and Victoria are chatting with the Cullens, jasper is subtly shielding Bella and Alice from them by controlling their moods and making them seem utterly, mind-numbingly boring so the nomads will glance at them and move on quickly. It only fails because of the gust of wind that blows Bella's scent towards James but wow I thought it was such a good detail for her to include Also I loved that Charlie's thoughts are hard to read too, like Edward can only see abstract feelings not specific thoughts Otherwise that book was painful to read and I'd love Dom to give it a crack 😈

The things sometimes that helps characters survive is some of the supernatural side characters in twilight were written way better than they should had been. In other hands maybe you get novels and novels of fan fiction or something that gives credit to these characters. The Tribe of Wolves, Jasper whole physical and mental changes as a vampire during the American civil war, how Alice with her gifts would be making the culled and others a killing in crypto currency etc, Rosalie being a urban legend in Chicago.

She reminded me so much of Edward at the time and I fell head of heels for her. Long story short, she became abusive. To the point the only real safe place I had was those books. They gave me hope that things would change. Edward got better. Eddie changed. She will too. She loves me just like he loves Bella. It'll get better. It didn't. It got worse. Now is any of that Meyers fault? No not really. But did her works have an affect on me and kind of push me to stay in a bad relationship? Yes it did. Unlike media for young adults and adults, media for teens need to practice a bit of mindfulness. And parents need to better monitor what their teens get into.

"Not seeing the world that way" As like, a half defense of Meyer here, I also grew up as a Mormon in Utah, ingrained in that specific culture and history, so I can say with certainty that statement is absolutely true: we aren't taught to see the world that way. It's absolutely horrible, inexcusable in the current era, and is something I had to consciously change within my worldview for several years. While the group of people five years younger than me are actively fighting against that notion, the people five years older still cling to the idea that everywhere is like Utah (which is a HORRIBLE thought). So like yes, Meyer has that worldview because of life circumstance, but also none of those things are good ideas to have.

I suspect a more likely reason is she wanted all the other Cullen siblings to be in relationships so that there was no chance of any of them competing for Bella's attention, and she didn't think through the implications, as she failed to do with many other aspects of the plot. Bella's instinct reaction is that it's a small-town mentality to be scandalized by that, then immediately admits to herself that even at home that would've caused gossip. As I recall, Pierce Brown said he was rejected by over 120 agents before finally someone accepted Red Rising. If Meyer just called them SOMETHING ELSE she could have kept them as they were and not pissed off at least 40% of the people who hated the story. Vampires come in lots of different flavors, but when they don't need to drink human blood, can move around in the daytime, are unharmed by sunlight and have goddam SUPERPOWERS, then they really aren't vampires anymore, are they? She coulda called them 'Cold Ones,' alluded that their myths were distorted over the ages to became what we know today as vampires and half of her detractors would have never existed...

@@Vainone009 True, and this idea sounds a lot more interesting than straight-up vampires. However, I disagree about the traits you think would discredit being a vampire. Dracula wasn't hurt by daylight and could walk around in it, and also had superpowers (scale vertical walls, super strength, mind control, etc.). Plus, a lot of more modern stories with "good" vampires in them have them drinking animal blood instead of human blood; it's like the de facto way to signal that the vampire is one of the good ones (if not the only good one). Sparkling in sunlight was a new take, but it fits for a romance story and isn't inherently bad; just different, which some people may like and others may not.

My feelings were further progressed into irritation and tiresome, when the movies came out and they were painfully tiresome. And the second book was basically a complete waste of time and could’ve been condensed into maybe 10 pages total

Just watched your videos reviewing Twilight from last year, and I wanted to respond to your confusion as to why anyone would like these books. For a little context, I was 12 years old when I read the first book back in 2007, and I was a die hard fan until I was about 15. I really loved these books back then because: 1) I was a literal child. 2) Because there was so much manipulation, emotional abuse, and gaslighting I had to deal with from my own mother. I never saw the actions of the characters as problematic because a lot of it was pretty normal to me. I also think I rationalized their behavior because that what I had to do with my own mom. It’s been over a decade since I considered myself a fan, but I wasn’t until your videos that I realized I had forgotten SO MUCH about these books. It was really shocking to listen to your summaries about the books I used to love as a child, through the eyes of an adult. I definitely agree that the books were wish fulfillment for people who had bad self esteem. I used to dream about running away from home, and starting over. Plus, finding a hot dude who was obsessed with me would’ve been a nice bonus 🤣🤣🤣 I’m sure my experiences don’t apply to most people, but I’m sure there are others out there who can relate ✌🏻

In my opinion Meyer is excellent at setting up genuinely interesting characters but can't for the life of her make anything out of them but cringy teen drama that seemingly act out everything that could possibly be wrong with young love. And of course the good parts can hardly be seen through all the bad writing, horrible story, assorted cultural problems and her uncomfortably gushing thighs. I still maintain that the best story you could have gotten out of what she set up was a supernatural-esque "Meeting of the dads"-story where Police-chief Dad and his best friend Local Indian hunt the bad vampires with the help of their tenuous ally Good Vampire Doctor. Where something could actually come of the "Ancient vampire enemy of the werewolf indian tribe"-story as they've learned to coexist in a strained peace, with Police-chief Dad kinda helping the two get along as an unbiased third party who can keep them focused on the bigger picture. Oh and where the connection to Indian folklore could be portrayed as the genuine and genuinely interesting article, instead of "I heard of skinwalkers and have zero imagination so they're just werewolves now".

And if that means all the main cast is white, than so be it. I wouldn't want to get them changed from dark skined to white eather if I imagined them with dark skin. They are my creation. If anyone wants to turn them real, I want it to be as close as possible to how I imagined them instead of pondering to some hollywood diversity just for "diversitys sake"

Fellow hobby writer myself. While I would like my characters to look like how they do in their original material, sometimes you have actors that fit the role even if they look different. Especially as you can’t always get people who look like their IRL counterparts or whatnot. I think you missed the point here, mate. This ain’t about Hollywood Diversity and whatever “for diversity’s sake” means. (Although I like to mention that argument is stupid, the world ain’t all white people, unless there’s a very crucial reason they’re white, I don’t see why Hollywood can’t finally let PoC actually shine in movies. I’m sick of how it’s full of white people, and then whenever we get a shot, people bitch about forcing diversity whenever we get excited to finally get included.) It’s about the fact that not every vampire needed to be pale white, yet Stephanie Meyer instead of being reasonable or logical, constantly wants to die on her hill that all her vampire children must be white as milk, and gets upset whenever somebody suggests she gives us some black or asian or latin vampires. She as the creator has the ability to encourage diversity through her work, to actually show what vampires with other cultures are like, to actually give us some goddamn representation in fantasy, where you’re often either white or some unnatural colour. Then again, this is the same person who glorifies Jasper being a Confederate Solider as well as her overall treatment of an actual Indigenous tribe. What I’m saying is, don’t give her a “to be fair”. Not every character needed to be white, she does not deserve to get extremely upset by the thought of diverse vampires, and it isn’t “Hollywood Diversity” to actually make your URBAN FANTASY setting, aka our world mixed with fantasy, at least somewhat as diverse as our real world. So yeah, in summary, Hollywood needs more diversity, and so does our media as a whole. An all white main casts are ridiculous nowadays unless they need to be all-white, or your idea of a group of people important to the story is that they need to all white. Grow up, accept you cannot have everything in your specific vision, and maybe wonder why we call for some goddamn diversity in movies.

@@lazulitrueblue of course more diversity is nice. What I mean by "Hollywood diversity" and "for diversitys sake" is when Hollywood makes "diverse" characters for the sole beeing of getting good guy points for having, for example, a black characters. Those characters are often shallow writen and stereotypical and always will wave there color/ethnetisity around like it's there only character trade (scratch that, for most of those forced characters that IS all of there character trades) No one says anything about good, dynamic and actually human diverse characters. But Hollywood rarely puts the actuall effort in to make those, and that's a shame. (Btw, I'm using Hollywood as an overhead term for the american movie industry. Since not all american movies/shows are made in Hollywood.) If I wanted my book/show/whatever to have a diverse cast, I wouldn't want to do it to get brownie points, but to make interesting characters that just happen to be from different backgrounds. Characters that are actually interesting and have more about them than just there skin color. (Like, for example, Luz from Owl House. She is latina, speaks spanish from time to time, but the show never makes a big deal about "oh my gash, look! A latina mc! Isn't that great?!", which is amazing becouse there is so much more to her character than that. That's the kind of diversity I like! Where the characters just are themselfe and not some card bord cut out sorry excuse of a human beeing) And I know that live action is limiting in how people can look and that you often have to simply go with the actor that fits best acting wise (which is why I like animation more, since how the actors look is irrelevant since there voice is the important thing), but one can dream. If my MC was a chinese girl with black long hair, I wouldn't want to settle on a scandinavian actress that has blond short hair just becouse her acting is great. Sure, the hair color and leangth can be changed through wigs, but the rest of her looks just wouldn't fit. I would keep looking for an actres who at least somewhat looks like my character, like an actres that is actually chinese or at least "looks" asian (for a lack of a better word). For the background characters, not so much. For that I would just pick whoevers acting fits best. But the main cast? They are like the cover image of the story! They are who I put most of my work in, the characters who I relate to the most. Finding actors that looks as close as possible to how I imagined them, that are also good actors, would be fantastic! Also, people more often than not write characters that are from there own etnicity. Since I'm german and as pale as snow, that's what most of my characters look like. If I where spanish, I'm pretty sure most of my characters would be spanish. But I'm not xD And my mind never thinks out of the box enough to "let" me make a more colorfull cast. I think the culture I branche out to the most is japanese? But that's probably becouse I'm extremly influenced by anime xD Btw, just as a side note, I don't know if you read/watched all of Twillight, but the vampire cast does get more diverse as characters from different countrys are introduced. There aren't that many, but there are some. (Also, I don't get what problem american have with Jasper? All the Vampires come from different time periods and places, and he is a pretty good character. There isn't even that much info put into his convederate backstory, mainly just that he was meant to die there. It's been a view years since I read the book, but I'm pretty sure he changed as a person between his army days and book present. There where years in between after all)

@@aniflowers1998 Before I commence, I like to contextualize both this and my last comment. As I am half-Black, I take conversations about diversity personally, especially when it relates to characters and writing. Therefore I will state that if I ever appeared upset or pissed off, I am not mad at you unless I do think you are a terrible person. That aside, onto the actual response. I appreciate the clarification, thank you. It is still a major issue, especially with big companies like Disney. I agree character should be more than their origin, even if a part of their character relates to their background. Often when I hear those terms thrown around, it’s often from racists who’s idea of forced diversity is different to yours and mine. You can understand why I might have been a tad pissed to hear them being used without (in my view) proper explanation. I as well agree that a diverse cast should exist to be different and interesting characters with unique stories of their own. (Also thank you for reminding me to watch The Owl House, it’s been on my watchlist for a while.) And while that might be a stretch for Twilight to actually do since Stephanie Meyer doesn’t really explore any of her already existing characters’ interesting backstories, definitely would be nice if she made more of an effort, and wasn’t so stuck up about it. Yeah, the disadvantages of live action suck. Animation is always my preferred style, but c’est la vie. I do agree, I still would prefer an actor to still have some resemblance to their character. I should clarify that what I mean is that considering how many characters in films are not so reliant on their race, it should be more acceptable for PoC to try for said characters’ roles even if they’re not 1 to 1 in terms of skin colour, since we’re often type-casted, if you know what I mean. In terms of the main cast, I agree, they are the main part of the story, so they require a lot more thought when it comes to casting. I’m just tired of it constantly being just background roles, but I definitely understand why you want to really nail the casting. Some of my previous comment was harsher on you for that than I should have been, and I apologize. It’s more my frustration on how Meyer herself refuses to even thought to the idea, considering her infamous reactions to the idea of a more diverse cast. (See her explanation on vampires having being pale, she literally says that they all have to be pale, but darker-skinned humans who become vampires might have a BARELY DISCERNABLE olive tint. That’s just insensitive, especially since skin comes in various ways that aren’t just olive-tinted. As well, it just reminds me of the ambiguously brown trope, in which a character is stated to have dark-skin, but that’s it. They can be theoretically from multiple cultures with dark skin, but the writer doesn’t want to actually give them one. While yes, there are people who it’s hard to tell just by look where they’re from, but the writer has the ability to tell us their character’s ethnicity. Meyer’s way of giving us diversity is giving us pale vamps with a tad olive tint, and saying they can be any culture with dark skin). Indeed, we do generally tend to write characters more often like ourselves . Hell, half of my characters often are biracial, due to myself being biracial. But just because that mindset exists, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to break it. It should not be a checklist, or the like, but sometimes we need to step back and ask ourselves: “Do I really need to make all my characters X?” or “Perhaps, it might be more interesting to make this character Y instead.” That’s my biggest problem with your comment. Acknowledging it and understanding it isn’t enough, we need to encourage writers to branch out more with their characters, just as much as we should encourage minorities to write their own stories themselves. You can still have German characters, and they can still take up say, the highest % of your main cast, but unless it’s required for the sale of the story you’re trying to tell, shaking it up hurts nobody. Even then, there’s always exceptions. Anyways, I admit I’m not the most knowledgable/up-to-date on Twilight. It’s been a while, I won’t lie, especially as I never liked both the books or the movies in general. But regardless, I’m glad to hear. However, just because they have maybe a few vampires from different countries does not exactly mean its’ characters are diverse. Nationality does not equal ethnicity. While sometimes they can be the same depending on the group, Americans by themselves, for example, are not actually considered an ethnicity. Also, on your point about Jasper being a Confederate Soldier. Firstly I’m Canadian, lol. I know we often get compared or mistaken for them, but my username is ArgentumKanada (Kanada = Canada). Secondly, I’m not sure if you’re aware but the Confederate Army was the Southern USA’s army in the Civil War. One of the reasons the south fought the north iirc (cause I ain’t American) was because they wanted to keep their slaves (aka my ancestors). The issue is how they glorify it, as it’s used to effectively praise Jasper as a great fighter. Not to mention, he became a General (or at least some high-ranking position, if I remember correctly), so he cared enough about it to get promoted. And thirdly, according to Meyer, he wouldn’t have changed. Supposedly, once they die they stay the same way mentally. So the implications there aren’t so great about all these vampires from times were white people were less accepting… Yeah.

The thing I love the most about the entire Twilight franchise and the conversations that are being had about it, is that no matter how much people disagree about certain topics, we can all *agree* that the SOUNDTRACK for all movies is just completely out of this world. It's so so so good that simply hearing the first few notes of Eyes on Fire instils bittersweet nostalgia in an entire generation. And I will always, always, always love Twilight for that.

The explanation they could've used to explain Edward's stalky behavior could've been that as she's his singer - her blood sings to him, him keeping tabs on her was something he couldn't literally control. Does that make it better? No, but it would've made it interesting if Edward was trying and failing to stay away from her. Or make it so that Edward, due to being able to mind-read can't really shut off thoughts he hears so he's always bombarded. When Bella shows up, he feels peace when he's near her for the first time since becoming a vampire, so while he's actively stalking her and he knows it's dangerous for her, he just does it for selfish reasons.
