it's interesting that male reviewers comment on how the nudity is aimed at women, and most women I know who saw it comment on how the nudity is clearly editted for straight male sensibilities, so I think from that we can conclude that the films use of nudity is just a total failure

the only one i've seen say otherwise was dan @ folding ideas, pointing out that the female director in the 1st movie shows greys nudity in an explicitly sexual manner VS the male director in the later two movies showing him shirtless and Getting Buff (and on occasion as a tool to show he's being more emotionally open with her, but not necessarily sexually)

Well there is the issue that both men and women tend to prefer looking at women. Lesbian porn is the most viewed by women and not by a small margin.

That final message is a good one. When you're in an abusive relationship, even when you know things aren't right, They often manipulate you into making you think it's your fault. My ex, would start a fight almost daily, Say the most cruel shit, to the extent of even putting me down about the fact I had to watch a family member Die. I'd sit there for over twenty minutes, forty, sometimes an hour of her just going on and on about how terrible I am, All until I snapped, because she thought it was sexy when I was pissed. She'd just wait for the smallest thing each day, no matter what it was. She'd flirt with other guys infront of me, while She constantly tried to force me to break contact with my own female friends. Would get pissed off at me, ANY time I decided to spend time with someone else in general, even family, unless I told her days ahead of time, and if getting pissed at me didn't work, or if at any time I was at my wits end, ready to end it, She'd threaten suicide, and say how she couldn't live without me. It finally all ended when she cheated on me(or at least when I found out she did, Not sure if she did so more times.). And was able to get her out of my life. In the end, I knew it was shit, I knew what she was doing was terrible, Hell, it got to the point, a week or so after I broke up with her and got over the sick feeling out of me, That when I was actually happy, It was honestly an alien sensation, It took me a few moments, when I was laughing, To actually realize what it was. You'll tell yourself anything, make any excuse, when they manipulate you well enough. Let me tell you something that would of saved me years worth of agony, and stress. You do NOT owe someone your life, If someone threatens to kill themselves over you wanting to break up with them, It is NOT your obligation to stay with them, it is NOT your duty to keep them alive, and at least with my scenario, Anyone who THREATENS suicide for a break up or to manipulate you at all, Is not someone you should be with. It doesn't matter if they say they'll stop, she said it once a week at least, that it'd just take some time, to just bare through it, Odds are, They won't. It Doesn't matter how much they say the love you more than anything forever, then flirt(or more) with other people, Or say the most horrible things to you. Someone that loves you, WILL NOT do this to you. So for your sake, Please, get out. It will be hard, Trust me, I know. I was so addicted to the person, that I couldn't eat for days no matter how hard I tried, and even when I didn't, I'd be up all night and morning puking nothing but acid out. But it does get better, It get's so much damn better, after it. Do not ruin your life, for someone that abuses you. Mentally, or Physically. And if you know someone in this position. Tell them, even if they don't listen, it may make them think about it. And the more they think about it, the more of a chance they'll take the right step. Fuck this book/movie series, for ever romanticizing ANY type of abusive relationship.

I am so sorry that this happened to you, and I am glad that you seem to be in a much happier and healthier place. My mom was in a relationship before I was born where the man she was with would threaten suicide EVERY time they had a disagreement or they were on the verge of breaking up. It worked for him until it emotionally drained her enough for her to be able to look past the manipulation. It's a horrible, horrible thing to do and that your ex would do such a thing (not to mention all of the other terrible acts you mention) because it gave her a power trip of all things shows just how much of a disgusting human being she is. Thank you for sharing your story.

Wow...that sounds horrible.. :/ My Ex was like that aswell albeit to a lesser extent. She would like count the fucking time I spend with friends and compare them to the time I spend with her - even if it didnt had anything to do with onanother..and after I dumped her, she wen to mutual friends and tried to blackmail me as the one being abusive and bad and I hadnt dumped her but it was just a "Break" even I clearly told her its over.. and other stuff. Nearly lost my best friend due to her fuckery. And yes you are absolutely right - it doesnt matter if they claim they love you or do this because they love you... its bad. To be honest - that this Book gloryfies and romanticises ( Is that even a word?... sry not an native Englishspeaker) such a BAD relationship is beyond my understanding. Plus that it is so damn popular. No words really.
@ssg4predater

@Milky_Bats That's terrible, I'm glad your mother was able to get out of that. It is draining, It truly is, You get to the point where your constantly worried about what they will think, It will get in your head that it's your fault when they do it, So when just want to go out, watch a few shows with your brother, They'll use it against you, Saying that you never spend time with them anymore, and how it breaks their heart, And if that doesn't work, out comes the killing yourself stick. And seeing as my ex supposedly(I say supposed because now I realize she was a pathological liar, Even about things that she didn't need to lie about.) tried to kill herself months before we met. It somehow made the threats more real in my mind. It got to the point I dreaded when friends asked me to spend time with them, Because I didn't want to say no, However I also knew the fight that would break out because of it. Draining is the perfect word, The only thing it brought was depression, stress and anger. Not a way to live. Thank you for sharing your mothers, The more people talk about this, the more other people may see it, and get out of it themselves.
@ssg4predater

@Calhaora Lightsbane Trust me, it was. Yours doesn't sound like a pleasure walk either though. She didn't do anything with mutual friends against me, Mostly because we didn't have them.(Her only real friend was a serial cheater. So I never liked her... I should of seen that as a redflag. Peoples friends often relate to them.) I'd already lost most of them by the end, Thankfully I've been reconnecting though since this all happened. Well, I'm glad that your best friend took you side in the end(Though I'd have suspicion about them truly being a friend, if they chose her word over yours.). It truly doesn't matter IF they claim they love, it doesn't even matter if they BELIEVE they love you, Actions truly speak louder than words. If someone loves you, they would never do that to someone they cared about. No bad background, or sad story can make it okay either. Yes it is indeed a word, What is your native tongue if you don't mind my asking, mostly for curiosity? Your English is very good by the way, so good job on that. The whole reason it's so 'loved' a combination of the kink of submitting to another person(As submission is sort of ingrained into many women thanks to evolution.), Now of course not every girl is submissive, not even close, BUT it is there for many, as shown by this movies success. And the misunderstanding of what love is. Love isn't the butterflies in your stomach when you look at them, It's not the lightheaded and chest feeling when you're together, It's not the absolute Desperate Need to be with someone. Love is two complete people choosing to be together, because they want to, not have to, It's the little things, and wanting the Other person to be happy. But let's be honest, This movie has no idea what love is, as well as it's core fanbase.

@c.d.dailey8013
@c.d.dailey8013 2 жыл бұрын
Even the outrage has an additional blessing in disguise. It provides validation for the victims of abuse. This validation is so nice and so refreshing. Abusers have some tendency to twist the truth. This is doing things like gaslighting, victim blaming and reactive abuse. The Fifty Shades series has a twisting of truth in the themes. It romanticizes abuse. This makes the victim think that they are in the wrong. It makes them suffer so much more. They tend to have lowered self esteem. They can get so confused that they question their sanity. It is really nasty stuff. What Dominic is doing is bringing a great big reality check. He gives blame to those that actually deserve it. Christian and abusers in general are the ones that are the ones in the wrong. Abusers are always 100% in the wrong. So they are ones that the outrage is crucifying. There is nothing that the victim did to warrant the abuse in the first place. Making tiny mistakes don't count, such as figuratively stepping and crushing eggshells. Lashing out in reaction doesn't count either. If a victim hears that they were not in the wrong, it helps them feel so much better. Validation sounds like a such a small thing, but it helps so much.

I'm really happy about your disclaimer at the end. The uncomfortable thing about this series is that it does a really good job at portraying a victim tangled in a web of abuse, but in stead of making the story about her getting out, it glamourizes the entire situation and makes her a hero for staying.
@rosalynnejames6346
@rosalynnejames6346 4 жыл бұрын
The first movie didn't give her enough reason to stay, so simply leaving him would have the weakest impact on the audience. Instead, they rolled with the fairytale, and said: "You are a therapist! (Even though you have no education in the field and never chose it.) Do your best!" I know. People like this should see a proper therapist. Unfortunately, many people in your life, not limited to lovers, WILL ask you, indirectly, to be their therapist. This movie is a fairytale for those who say yes, in the hopes of saving the relationship. It could be your mother, your friend, your colleague, your neighbour, your lover, and it can hurt to say: "No, you need a professional. (Something is wrong with you.)" This fairytale is a cute idea, and in a world where not everyone can leave their mental wrecks, it brings hope. That said; hell yeah, leave this guy. Never say yes to his abusive ex, either. If that sounds bad, get the actual education, so you at least know what you're agreeing to treat. Yeah. But this movie is the fairytale version, so nobody breaks from the strain. Fairytale characters are immortal, after all.

On Kate's brother (who hooks up with Mia) missing from the film, that's one of those instances where the Twilight plagiarism is so crazy obvious. Mia is the Twilight!Alice counterpart so the Twilight!Jasper counterpart had to show up in the fanfic to finish up the Cullen cast. It's crazy to me no one thought to cut that out once the fanfic got turned to an actual novel (though I use that word loosely) but that implies any editing would have happened. The PSA at the end was very nicely put, and I’m glad you said it. Being unable to escape an abusive relationship and/or not seeing the red flags before it’s too late don’t make you a bad person. Being unable to stand up for yourself due to the abuse doesn’t make you bad, either. Abuse is always the fault of the abuser. And if E.L. James had been a better writer, and had intended this book to be about abuse, a character like Ana would be far more relatable and understandable. It’s not that abuse victims are to blame. It’s that E.L. James can’t write for shit. Anyway, moving on. This movie was such a slog to get through. Better than the book, but that’s not saying much. Although the woman who played the former sub in this movie is a really talented actress, and I felt more for her in her limited screen time than I ever did for the main characters. Her confrontation with Ana and Christian was actually somewhat interesting. I wish I could say that about the rest of the film. Thank you for doing these videos. They’re some of my favorites (your videos, definitely *not* the books), and I hope you do the third book sooner rather than later. Although I understand needing a long, long break beforehand. There’s only so much 50 Shades anyone should ever consume at one time.

@@GhostHelwig Wow--a two-year-old commenter answered right away, lol I guess what disturbs me the most is that Ana sees what Christian has done to this poor girl and apparently it has no effect on her. I feel sorry for EL James--she seems to have some serious self-loathing or something. She presented this scene to show that Ana is his real "true love" and oh this poor deluded ex-sub just can't accept that she wasn't "enough" for him, or something? Sad.

@@grumpyotter KZbin sends me notifications of replies, or I wouldn’t have noticed. Lol I think it says a lot about Ana that she feels no empathy for that woman, nor for really anyone but Christian. It’s a very selfish thing, when all you can bring yourself to care about is yourself and your SO. For all that Ana is described as being someone who cares deeply for others, her actual actions are incredibly self absorbed. I think E L James must be similar, just because she seems so blind to Ana’s flaws. Or she’s just a bad writer with a lot of ingrained sexism that makes her unable to realize not every woman is her lead’s romantic rival. Or both. It’s probably both.

Welcome to capitalism! James couldn't find a publisher at first, so she self-published. And it made so much money that a "legitimate" publisher took it over and it made even more money. If I can believe the internet, she has made something like 100 million from this series. I actually do feel sorry for her though, somehow, if these are actually her fantasies. I mean, my brain comes up with some pretty twisted stuff and some skirts the line of non-consensual, but my "Fantasy Dom" never goes too far. If I wrote it down though, I'd read the room a bit first. I can't imagine her publishers were thrilled that they were forced to publish the first as-written because it is so terrible on so many levels, but it was already out there. For the second though, I imagine the editors staring at each other in a room and just looking bewildered. "How the fuck can we even begin to fix this? It needs a complete rewrite just in structure--don't even get me started on the moral issues." And the editors (I tend to think of editors as people who really love books) are pulling their hair out in an all-night brainstorming session with occasional suggestions of "Maybe if she didn't say 'oh my' so much?" or "Could we have something fall on Ana's head as a child so we can blame it on a brain injury?" Then morning dawns, and exhausted bodies are sprawled all over the conference room amidst half-empty coffee cups and thousands of crumpled post-it notes, and in springs the owners of the company asking brightly, "Why, what's wrong here?" After the editors explain, owners just say, "Who cares? It sells! Print it!" One brave editor raises her hand and says, "Sir, after the first book was published there was a direct correlation found between people in abusive relationships who had read this book and we think it would be irresponsible to . . . " Owner fixes her with a steely glare. "We are not in the business of being responsible. Print it. And watch the money roll in." I wish EL James would take some of that money and get some therapy for herself. (lol, sorry--didn't mean to get into a tangent there. Now I am wondering if the brave editor quit after that . . . )

Your final message hit home for me. About 18 months ago I finally - FINALLY - escaped a horrendously abusive relationship. I'll not go into details but suffice to say that I should have seen the warning signs from, literally, day one. She was all kinds of trouble. I was trapped in there for four years because I just could not see it for a long time. I rationalised, excused, apologised, all the hallmarks. About two years ago I finally cottoned on, but it took me about six more months to finally cut the strings. I don't know why. Fear of loneliness? Fear of change? Fear of looking like "the bad guy" for ending it? My friends and loved ones were constantly asking me "Are you happy?", "Is everything okay?" and every time I would think "No, not especially." But I'd say "Yeah, yeah, fine, we're fine." Hell, she even left me once, about two years into our relationship, and I ended up asking her to come back. Fuck only knows why. I should have danced a jig that day and let her go with a smile on my face. Every day I kick myself and curse myself for four miserable, wasted years that have irreparably damaged me and left me emotionally scarred. I'm only grateful that I finally did what was in my best interests and told her to get out, that I was done taking her shit and her games. If you have taken the trouble to read my little post, and you are in an abusive relationship, then I implore you to end it right now. Today. This minute. Every moment you spend with them is a waste and I promise you - I promise you - you are far better off on your own than with someone who makes you unhappy

Jamie wasnt comfortable with the nudity keep in mind he had a pregnant wife with high hormones and tripple mood swings, while Dakota had just broken up with her bf. They were just friends but the directors and movie promoters wanted to give them a twilight scandal of them hooking up , they declined that shit especially after the damage a twilight Scandal did to Kristen Stewart yet she was a lesbian. They hated the pressure EL put them into while filming , especially Dakota who had the worst share of being nude , no direction on how to do the scenes , overdoing the scenes and being into a character that is abused .

For what it's worth, as frustrated as you've been with the characters and writing, I do appreciate that you've always been 'on Ana's side' as it were. You never throw up your hands and go 'fine, she deserves this'. It's legit heartwarming that as pissed off as her character can make you (amongst everything else that pisses you off) you do keep diverting to 'and then she leaves him and lives happily ever after'. It's just a nice reminder that you don't have to like someone/a character to want them to be in a better place.

First of all I felt your final message was very well handled & I earned a lot of respect from me; as have all your real life thoughts on this delicate subject matter. The big take away I have from these awful films is just how fundamentally apathetic the executives must be as everything about the marketing, in particular the soundtrack, seemed aimed towards teenage girls - the softer rating and hiring current & young artists for the soundtrack, mostly woman such as Beyonce. The books maybe mostly for a middle age demographic but the films seem definitely like they want to cash in on a younger crowd. This is abhorent to me as this teenage demogtraphic is one almost universally accepted as naturally insecure as this is the point in ones life when most body changes occur as well as being a period of social transition from childhood to adulthood & the inherent pressures to conform to new norms from both adults & teenage peers. In short (and i'm aware this comment is anything but) gift wrapping this abusive horror story as romance, with a 'sexy' romantic soundtrack, and releasing it for Valentines day and actively making it not only available for 15+ teens but actually trying to make it appealing to them is monstrous. I understand many teens have the common sense to appreciate the toxicity of the relationship in this film & most others will come to see it when they've matured a bit more, but many will still be suseptable to this films normalisation of this toxic relationship and that is just wrong!! P.S. Your Mystic Meg joke has honestly made my day. I hope 'you'll be celebtrating tooooooo...' xx

I wanted to thank you for the message at then end of this video. I spent two years being emotionally abused by someone I considered a sister to me. I was so desperate for her acceptance that I allowed it to happen even after I knew what was going on. In the year since our friendship ended, I've had a particularly rough time and have gone through a serious bout of depression and self hatred that involved many nights of crying myself to sleep because I felt I was stupid for letting it continue and pathetic because I still craved her acceptance. Hearing the message that I'm not stupid for what I went through, especially from someone I look up to, has meant a lot to me, and I actually cried because for once I didn't feel like such an idiot.

I think the reason that we enjoy seeing you review these books is your honest feelings. Usually we see a calm and collected Dominic (using the full name because of this particular subject), a Dominic that stands in front of the camera, ready to detail without much emotion (not charisma though). In short, a very British Dominic. But when someone is overflowing with emotions, be it anger or joy, they tend to reveal their true self. And I see a truly caring person. You care for your friends, your audience, you even care for Anna, a fictional dumbass who was created to be manipulated by a rich psychopath. That's why we love seeing you do this: it's the best way to see the best you as audience. Beyond the basic pleasure of seeing a critic comically loses his mind...

I'm pretty sure she has only seen the movies because she tried to convince me it was a romance. I just had to tell her there were only three days between the first and second and she stopped trying.

I can respect that you hate the shit out of the series but I LOVE you doing more of it. Not only because I find it entertaining but because it'll attract more people to your channel which I consider vastly underrated and undersubbed. Sort of blows my mind you haven't hit 100k subs yet given your obvious comedic talent and skill at editing.

I feel like, if you ever do an episode on twilight, its badness will be overshadowed by this. Dont get me wrong I'm sure Twilight won't be enjoyable but even the internet took its "cause of all the evil in the universe" crown and gave it to 50 shades.

Twilight is bad but it’s like run of the mill bad and in hindsight the internet overreacted. I mean think about it, there are plenty of worse popular books out there that don’t get nearly the same scorn. The crown is rightfully where it belongs now.

The Books where pretty formula egg but Book Bella is MILES better than what this "Actress" pulled off. And yes...read them...all of them. fml. xD The only thing in my opinion what made it bad was this forced loveshit. Let her get Shovelface and good is. Wolfie can still be her best friend - could even have still the hots for her, which would have made for an interessting Char.development on both sides. But the Movies... ergh. ERGH. SO. Painfull. And yes. The crown sits where it belongs - on the Head of the TwillightFanfic.

Hey you just made me realize that we found a love story that's worse than Twilight. We're going to have to completely redo that meme.

Twilight had the excuse that it was a Mormon Gothic Romance. Of course it had an insufferable Byronic hero and unhealthy attitudes towards sex, pregnancy, and marriage. 50 Shades tried to be BDSM erotica, an erotic thriller, and a modern romance, and it failed on every. Single. Level.

25:40 i appreciate your point here to not blame real people who dont see red flags. i wanna add that it's because someone else CHOSE to be manipulative. sometimes it's more complicated than simply aggressor-and-victim if youre dealing with serious mental illness, but the “it's not your fault someone else is an asshole” sentiment remains the same.

I love the bit at the end, I was stuck in an emotionally abusive relationship and if it weren't for my now girlfriend, I would have still been trapped in it.

There's a specific subset of fanfiction called Infinite Loops, the basic premise of which is that something happened to Yggdrasil, the computer running the multiverse, and in an effort to save those universes the admins start damaged worlds looping back in time to stabilize them, with specific people retaining memories every time their loop resets. Info-dump aside, I'm half tempted to do that for these books just to deconstruct them as you're doing now. But then again, I'd probably have to subject myself to them to do that, so maybe not.

As much as I laughed listening to your take on this godawful movie, I would also like to thank you for your ending take. I have a person in my life whose relationship gives me giant red flags, but my attempts to bring it up has crashed and burned, to the point where I’m afraid our relationship might be irreparably lost. I’m often pained by fantasies of how I could have handled the whole thing better, by doubts about possibly being completely off, or scenarios where their relationship is actually worse than I’ve supposed. It is a comfort to hear someone say I was at least right to attempt to voice my concerns. Cheers

Despite the Fifty Shade series being set in Seattle, I'm still actually amazed they filmed in Seattle because they never do usually XD. Also thanks for the talk during the credits, a lot of people blame domestic violence victims for their situations and I'm grateful that you acknowledge that some don't even realize they are in that type of relationship. I had a client once who was absolutely shocked when she saw the power and control wheel and realized how the abuser had been controlling her life and abusing her, because she never realized she was in an unhealthy relationship until she decided to leave.
