Fig Newtons remind me of my youth. They were one of my Dad's favorites but I don't think we ever had ones with rum in them! That sounds delicious and I will make them soon. Figs are one of my favorite fruits and I wait patiently for them to be ready to pick and enjoy... but dried ones will do in a pinch. I love fresh figs cut and sprinkled with just a touch of brown sugar, placed under a broiler/salamander and then topped with a drizzle of fresh cream... so good. Thank you.

HI Julie Joy. I recall Fig Rolls from my childhood too. I don't think I liked them much then. But now I love them. I do like fresh figs, and they are good in tarts etc too. But for the fig rolls the soft dried ones are best I think, and so much cheaper for me than buying the equivalent amount of fresh.

My gram used to make these all the time! Yours looks almost exactly the same as hers which is amazing because she unfortunately died a few years ago and I never got her recipe for them and none of the recipes online were like hers. I'm definitely making these as soon as possible. You may have just gifted me a lost recipe Geoff. Thank you.

Does it need to be white sugar? Can you use demerara or brown?
@geoffsbakingblog3 жыл бұрын
Hi therealrodhull1. You can use demerar sugar instead, though it tends to have larger grains which take longer to dissolve. So, if I was going to use demerara sugar in this dough I would blitz it first to reduce the size of the grains . An alternative might be soft light brown sugar.

Hi Geoff where do you buy figs from? I have found them in ASDA for £3
@geoffsbakingblog2 жыл бұрын
Hi Robin. Figs can be quite expensive. But you don't need fresh figs. Soft dried figs are best for this recipe. I bought a large bag 1.13g from Costco. I think the ASDA price is pretty similar to Tesco, and not a bad price for about 450g.

HI Marshall. Not having a processor isn't a problem. You rub the butter into the dry ingredients, between your fingertips, until you have the breadcrumb like texture. Then beat the egg and add it with the vanilla and use a spoon, or a hand, to briskly mix until it all combines and use a hand to pull it all together into a soft dough.
