look up what boxing looked like before the Marquess of Queensberry rules became a thing. A lot of boxers had long guards, one hand down to cover the liver and be ready with a cross. because of the lack of gloves they didn't favor guarding the head much. the stance looked like the stance of traditional martial arts.

This. I'm a taiji guy but I've always sparred with people who did other things to learn to adapt my fighting to other systems. My taiji school didn't spar at all, but I like to fight. I wasn't learning other systems, just training the way they did. Turned out to be the best thing for my taiji. I've since added other systems, like eagle claw, xingyi, wing chun, and yiquan. They all work fine with the proper training methodology. It's just that few schools spar, fewer spar hard, and fewer still spar against people from different systems. I'll also add that they appear to be fighting under boxing rules. I don't see any throws, locks, or ground fighting.

Yep, Tai Chi is grade A if you already know how to fight. It's a system that's designed to integrate underlying combat skills, even seen it incorporated into gun play. I think it was the dominant style of practical kung fu pre Chinese cultural revolution, but what it was has been greatly diminished.

1:43 it proves that if you want to get good at fighting, you need to fight. Some of the stuff he's doing like 'sticking' can be attributed to taichi as well as the strength of the pawing and his interception of the overhand right. But I think it's the experience. Boxing has regular sparring so he can apply himself. Some of his Tai chi will come in but he needed that pressure testing to find what stuck with him. He did alarmingly well though.

Exactly! I'm a taiji guy who was frustrated that his taiji school didn't spar, so I joined an open sparring group. It made all the difference, because you have to train with people who don't fight like you do, and you have to learn to hit and get hit and keep going. Too many schools forget that they're supposed to be learning to fight.

Loved this. Wearing gloves in a sparring or fight brings any tai chi or wing chun guy in need to adapt to boxing techniques. The size of the gloves disable a lot of movements especially used in close distance attacks, and on the other hand you don‘t need to execute many typical defense techniques because the gloves provide cover. The tai chi master adopted well to boxing, but he kept the principle of defending and counterattacking simoultaneously, you can see it in a number of scenes. Well done, respect.

I think Tai Chi combativley is designed around four very practical real life conclusions 1. An incapacitating bone break and or ligament damage. 2. An incapacitating strike to vital areas, mostly with fingers, palm heels, shoulders, head butts, forearms, elbows, and wrists, with very sparse use of knees, feet and fists. 3. Launching opponents into inanimate objects in the immediate area and into each other. Using your environment as both a weapon and a shield. Also incapacitating power slams. 4. Joint and tendon seizing based submissions, blood and air chokes, and manipulative cavity pressess. If you didn't see much of the above in a combat tao chi demo then I wouldn't call it Tai Chi IMO, although there is some variation between the main styles. Not much about effective Tai Chi lends itself to knocking out opponents or trading, dodging or blocking blows at all, nor is it pure grappling, is why it's not so good competitively, but incorporating sports fighting into it is extremely easy to do.

Xu shadong student kept sticking to a 1,10 combo to set up whatever he needed to do. But if that doesn't work for the 3rd time, you need to"adapt" to another game plan. Like the masters long torso was a big target. But I think the student would have been successful with a 2,5,3 combo

Taiji seems great for stand up grappling, as alternative to Judo and Greco Roman. The latter focus on takedown and grapple, but the former is all about takedown defence. It also has a large bridging/clinching focus in comparison, with extended arms ,and good footwork. It shines through more thanks to boxing making him able to endure in the ring.

To date, only Mantis Kung Fu has demonstrated efficacy against Muay Thai practitioners. Anecdotal evidence suggests effectiveness in street fighting, although this has only been observed in three documented cases. Furthermore, I have only witnessed two practitioners successfully apply Wing Chun techniques. We anticipate a broader representation of Kung Fu styles in future competitions. Tai Chi Chuan is unsuitable for stand-up fighting but may offer advantages in grappling scenarios.

It goes to show that sparring in a martial arts goes a long way in developing the practitioners. Depending on the type Tai Chi - sport tai chi, tai chi in the park, or combat tai chi - without sparring then it is all talk. But it comes down to the attitude of the school master and the culture that he establishes. It is similar to a karate school that only does kata, or ippon kumite, with no sparring. Or a Tae Kwon Do school only doing poomsae, board breaking, or one step drills, without sparring.

Xu Xiao Dongs student needs some boxing lessons - he's dropping both hands and sticking his chin up every time he punches! the boxer/tai chi guy is at least keeping his guard up. Needs to move his feet more though - especially laterally. He's going straight back after every exchange which means hes still in line for any haymaker from the other guy and even though the XXD guy is hitting with his eyes closed, they are still landing in round 2. Older guy does have the classic problem though - he's old so later rounds are a challenge (speaking as an old fart myself) and you can see his hands starting to drop in rounds 2 and 3. With old and young its always a matter of time before the young bucks endurance tells. If I was going to relive my training years knowing what I know now I think I would concentrate on boxing or muay thai and wrestling for years before I ever bothered looking at the softer styles. IMHO the softer styles are fascinating and really enjoyable, but often are incomplete and often rely on the student having a strong base of actual fighting before they start.

The boxing training gives the TC fellow more experience with actual combative training. The weakness of T'ai Chi - typically in the training, is that it is generally promoted and taught as a health practice -"moving yoga" as opposed to a functional martial art. In the West preticulalry, the people looking for holistic health, as soon as they encounter Push Hands... they're like "OMG! Violence! I'm outta here!" So, in a lot of TC studios, there is no pressure testing, or applied Tai Chi. It absolutely puts a lot of T'ai Chi practitioners at a major disadvantage versus anyone who's trained in a primary combat art. However a deep understanding of T'ai Chi - the physics, and energy movement can inform other arts like Karate, MMA, jujutsu... and make them more efficient. But generally on it's own, T'ai Chi Ch'uan is not an effective art versus dedicated combat styles.

Tai chi forms and push-hands have the foundations for a safe training regimen for MMA. But the best modern-day tai chi fighters tend to hold their own against Judo type stuff instead of boxing. That's because the striking requires much more gruelling investment in zhan zhuang exercises for rooting/planting a solid base for powerful strikes, and then getting into all the timing and strike types. No doubt this tai chi guy has been beginning to join many of the dots from the forms - "learning to hug" probably not necessarily as a boxing clinch type technique, but more as a sort of Judo entry. This video was cool to watch.

At first he came to prove that Tai Chi is superior but lost so he decided to take up boxing in order to prove that Tai Chi is superior. Does he not realize the contradiction in that?

Look at the stance and hand guard at 1:40. He incorporated Tai chi into it.Any bobbin and weaving like Mike Tyson? Any dancing around on your toes like Ali or Bruce Lee? No. Xu got angry after the second round and told his student to use " everything" you learned for a reason. That's why he tried throwing him to the ground like a MMA fighter.

@@CharlesBetancourt-iq9oe First of all, literally all Tai Chi masters will be dominated by an MMA fighter of equal years experience. If he claims Tai Chi is superior than Tai Chi alone should be sufficient. Did he not lose the first time? As soon as he incorporated something of his opponent's art into his own he admitted defeat.

Bwahahahaa. A Tai Chi "master" has to train in boxing just to stay effective. So, he's now a boxer, not a traditional Tai Chi master. So what changed? That Tai Chi cannot hold it's own in any combat sports. It has to fuse with the more effective styles in order to survive. Nothing has changed since the first match. Previously: Tai Chi was a joke. Now: Tai Chi is still a joke.

The former Tai Chi guy did have advantages in height, reach and weight and that is harder to get over as you get older for the MMA guy. But in order for that to matter the TaiChi guy had to learn boxing 🥊 so props for that for him. Of course, this means that Tai Chi didn’t help at all but hey can’t have everything. 😂 ((Glad that you found something you to help you too. Get better still.))
