Wonder if the body would disintegrate once it was ejected at that speed. I'm pretty sure it would have broken apart immediately. This is what I think at least. Quick way to get med boarded is to eject out of an aircraft anyway the stress alone compresses your spine and you lose an inch of height. Twice and its an automatic grounding for the rest of your career.

I feel like the opening scene on the carrier could have led to a scene where the Hornets are supporting troops in contact in some unmentioned desert country. Then they could've explained that after 20 years of GWOT, focusing on air to ground combat, fighter pilots had lost valuable dog fighting skills, hence the need to expand TOPGUN and explaining Mavericks return

I can't believe people actually thought that there was no CGI at all. Even the producers said they used CGI. They just placed the actors in backseats of planes to capture genuine reactions. Thats what the producers meant when they said "it's real".

I don't know the extent of the CGI or how they did it, but I interpreted it as them using real airplanes for the footage. Even if they took that footage and spliced it around in different places. Like the footage looking up through the canopy going under another hornet. I figured the other hornet was actually filmed but then spliced into that scene instead of using digitally recreated airplanes. I'm probably wrong because I haven't seen the behind the scenes of the CGI stuff.

The reason for the Hornet stick is because it was an F18 that was used in this scene, the sonic boom that lifts the roof of the guard shack was real, in fact it was not planned, but accidental, DarkStar was CGI in the sequence, and the Mock up DarkStar aircraft build along side Skunk Works was used for close ups, taxing, ETC.. The most important thing that I enjoyed about this movie is getting together with many military veterans, active personnel, and their families. It was a joy hearing all of us making comments of our own experience with F18s, F14s, being on the carriers, seeing my squadron insignia VFA-151 and the tiger stripes on the F18s as they were taking off bringing back so many good memories, along with many familiar scenes of San Diego that I miss so much. Overall it was a great movie and I can't wait for the Blue Ray and I am buying a sick surround sound system too.

I didn’t have a problem with the Darkstar sequence (well, except for the whole surviving a Mach 10 wipeout). I think it helps set up the situation that he has finally mothballed his career. The biggest plot issue I have is one you have mentioned several times. Rooster. The movie never really shows us why he is “same old Rooster”. I think an intro after the opening sequence showing us Rooster’s problems is needed.

Providing any supporting character development or exposition, would have meant less screen time for Tom Cruise, so.... This was not 'Top Gun II", it was called "Top Gun: MAVERICK", because it was all about how Tom Cruise, I mean Maverick, was even more awesome and legendary than he was in 1986, and isn't really getting old AT ALL.

I assume the whole Darkstar plotline was a big, fat homage to the early Muroc/Edwards-Yeager days in general, and "The Right Stuff" in particular. That would explain the lax security (apparently, the early post-war test flights were conducted in a rather relaxed atmosphere, that is until General Albert Boyd moved the flight test center from Wright-Patterson out to the Mojave Desert), and the scene with Maverick appearing at the bar somewhat mirrors Yeager's crash in the NF-104A (amped up to 11). My head-canon explanation for him surviving the Darkstar completely disintegrating at hypersonic speeds is that I assume the Darkstar had a similar escape system as the F-111 (capsule).

@@Silversmok3 That was an unprotected ejection seat at Mach 3, NASA had a Mach 5 design that incorporated a windshield, literally a shield to protect the crew person. A Mach 10 design would likely incorporate a capsule with a passive (no power of fuel needed) braking system to control the capsule's attitude and slow it down enough for chutes to open. It's not that hard, you're looking at a FBW aircraft, all the connectors between the cockpit and the plane are just large plugs that carry data and power like those you find on computer motherboards.

I'm an old fart, and was once stationed at Kadena AB when the SR's were still there. That after takeoff scene where you see the two burners climbing up into outer space. That's exactly what the SR-71 looked like after takeoff. I'll also note that F-117 flew almost exclusively at night for a long time until it was about to come out of the closet. This Dark Star was not the first. The LM RQ-3 Darkstar UAV was the first. At time my brother worked for an LM competitor on UAVs. After the first prototype crashed on its second flight he started calling it 'Dark Hole'. One last thing. I'm begging you guys to ruin 'Red Flag, the Ultimate Game'. Just got home from 5 years on the flightline in Kadena a year or two ago. Would've been awesome to see a sight like that. We briefly did get a U-2 or two temporarily stationed at Kadena because their runway in Korea was being worked on. Sometimes we'd debate who had the loudest engines on base, the Awacs TF-33s, the F-35 engines, or the U-2s, but I think the U-2 had everyone beat. That thing was LOUD. Got to watch it take off a couple times.

That looks like he does about 30 degrees of turn a second (1/12th of a circle) at mach 9 (ballpark 2700m/s). The circle circumference is thus about 32,400m, which gives a radius of just over 5000m (2×pi×r=c). The acceleration on the airframe (a=v^2/r) is thus ballpark 1400m/s^2 or close to 144g... The only believeable reason I see for Maverick's deliberately flying the Darkstar beyond mach 10, destroying it is that he knew after this unauthorised flight they would likely kick him out, or ground him permanently. And since he was in his self worth so dependent on his "naval aviator" identity (as he himself admits), it was his attempt to "go out in style" with that plane instead of being kicked out and grounded from fast jet flying. And spending the rest of his days sitting alone in his hangar, pining after what he no longer has. He had to know for some time that his friend Ice was quite ill and would retire sooner rather than later, and without his protection, his flying days were over. Bit of a suicidal streak there with the Darkstar.

I quite like what Mover said about moving the Darkstar scene else where in his previous videos… Personally, I think moving it to the end of the movie, and cut it at the explosion, would be a perfect way to end the movie.

So, on a lot of the Darkstar stuff, my impression was that it was not a government owned plane. Darkstar has Lockheed's Skunkworks insignia (a skunk) on the tail. My read was, that the government has not yet purchased the plane, pending fulfillment of the test requirements (mach 10). I'm probably wrong about much of this, but I'd welcome thoughts/feedback.

Yep, that's what it was. The Navy working with Lockheed Martin to test it. Fun fact: That plane was actually designed by engineers at Skunkworks for the movie.
@dallasyap3064

Well in a way yes. The Navy has not bought it yet bcoz its still in testing and development phase. Contractor company will work with the military's test and evaluation units and personnel to test the planes until they achieve their objectives/performances stated in the contract. The military will also be providing funding for the development (I'm not sure full or partial but they do fund the R&D, depends on the contract). If the plane meets the objectives the military would buy it and it will enter mass production.

One other change in the opening text about Top Gun: Not only did they add "women", but they also changed "insure" from the original to "ensure". Most people use the former in English vernacular, but that's bizarrely incorrect (even though it seems to make sense with the definitions we accept).

The fact that a Navy test pilot is evaluating the Dark Star really makes no sense. For one thing, his plaque in the hanger said 412th Test Wing (which is my former unit). That's an Air Force wing at Edwards Air Force Base, which is obviously where he's supposed to be (Mojave, California). There are Navy exchange students at the Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards, but they are mostly O-3s and O-4s. Not O-6s. And none of them are serving in the capacity of "test pilot". Also, the "Dark Star" aircraft would not be exposed like that with no security. The fact that he just rolled his POV onto the flightline, and walked into the hangar with no ID check is ridiculous.

First time i saw the Darkstar I immediately thought to small. Look at the SR71 and the cockpit size in relation to the overall size of the jet. The SR71 is literally a flying gas tank and can hold up near 100,000 pounds of fuel to go mach 3.3. To go mach 10, it would require a lot more fuel.
@petrairene

There is a film theory that everything after the Darkstar wipeout is a dream. Maverick actually DID die when he hit Mach 10.3. The reasoning behind this is everything after the wipeout goes perfectly, he completes the mission, no loss of life, makes amends with Rooster and gets the girl. Maverick is basically living the dream in heaven.

9:07 as far as I know, all the F-117 flight tests were done at night, at least in the beginning, because they were afraid of soviet satellites. And when the thing was taking off, everyone on the base who wasn't cleared to see it had to stay indoors, it was that top secret. So launching this thing at night does make sense. The Darkstar sequence is obviously a tip to The Right Stuff. Another theory is that Darkstar sequence takes place after the events of Maverick, and in a realistic world, Maverick dies at Mach 10 as his somewhat reckless behavior at times end up catching up to him. He even says "one last ride" prior to departure foreshadowing the events about to take place.

Here's my theory about the Darkstar crash: the ejection works similarly to the F111, which jettisoned the entire cockpit section of the plane rather than just the seat. Probably deploys a parachute to reduce the airspeed of the cockpit, then ejects the pilot after the cockpit has reached a safe airspeed.
