SNK box arts always manage to be eye catching to me no matter how generic they can sometimes get, so glad it finally gets some spotlight in this video. Also, I think why they paired Ryu with Terry in certain CVS game box arts is because Terry was the main protagonist for SNK's first fighting game and also he would later become the mascot of the company.
@velostation6309 Жыл бұрын
I think Terry would have been slightly more recognizable to US audiences because of the anime films. But pairing him with Ken makes more sense, like in the Japanese SVC Chaos cover.
@pablocasas5906 Жыл бұрын
For the Neo-Geo Pocket SNK vs. Capcom Card Battle the key art shows Terry representing SNK and Ryu representing Capcom, which makes sense considering they're their respective mascots for their companies. That's why I personally don't like when in Capcom vs. SNK they make Kyo Ryu's rival, yeah, Kyo is has been the longest lasting protagonist of KoF, but he doesn't have that much in common with Ryu, in fact, Ryo would be a more logical rival to Ryu
@velostation6309 Жыл бұрын
Ryu vs. Terry is also interesting when you realize they were technically created by the same person (Takashi Nishiyama, SFI designer who later joined SNK, with FF being envisioned as a spiriual follow-up to the original SF, until Capcom made SFII on their own).
@frozenray007911 ай бұрын
People in the US know who Kyo is, but yeah I do think that Terry is more instantly recognizable. Fatal Fury has always felt more popular, and *accessible*, in America than the brilliant KOF games.
@pablocasas590611 ай бұрын
@@frozenray0079 some developers at SNK recently commented about the popularity of their games abroad, they said The King of Fighters franchise is popular in Latin America and China, while they noted that Fatal Fury has more fans in the U.S. I think I can see it that way, especially since games like Real Bout 2 and Mark of the Wolves were released on the NeoGeo with only 2 language options (Japanese and English), despite previous games since Fatal Fury 3 included Portuguese and Spanish options, but all of the games from KoF '96 onwards were translated into Portuguese/Spanish It could be that RB2 and Garou: MoW didn't have enough memory to include more languages, but who knows

Just to add up some extra info: The UMVC3 original cover was actually reversible, with the other side using American style art much more in proximity with the original MVC3 cover. That reversable cover for UMVC3 is certainly an intresting choice to have as the reverable. Its not bad or anything but the faces look a bit more off the the Vanilla MVC3 in my point of view. Having the MVC art book there are tons of promotional art worls that i think would have been more suitable.

One piece of cover art I really like but never see many opinions on is the Japanese Saturn art for Virtua Fighter Remix. It's this really detailed, hand drawn piece with some harsh, but pleasant coloring. You don't really ever see VF characters depicted in that style after that. The US/PAL version's cover is hilarious in comparison, but that version was also a mail order game Sega sent out for free to apologize for the poorly received original release, so I guess having appealing art to sell the game was less of a priority. Love the video, glad to see so many more aspects of the genre are being explored!

I've always loved the Mortal Kombat box arts from the first game to Armaggedon. Just comes to show that all you need is a powerful logo to tell what the game entails without having to resort to elaborated characters. MK1 to 7 covers felt dark and somewhat intimidating, like you know if you see the dragon brand, something's about to get bloody. From MK vs DC to MK11, the covers just felt too loud. Plus, the logo was just a background this time. I'd say the same for the latest MK1 but based on the lore of Liu Kang restarting the timeline, I'd say the cover was justified for its light and vivid theme. At least the dragon logo was bigger this time.

I've actually been posting on Reddit some "best of a franchise" collages, with boxart being one of the categories. And yeah, it got me thinking about how people are going to associate games more with their menu icon now, than actual boxart. I will say though, that consoles are now using more dvd-boxart-shaped pictures than the squares of Xbox and Nintendo. I have an idea for future content. One of the categories in my reddit posts was game logos. And I'm curious what you think about them, or your philosophy on what makes a good one. For Tekken, I chose T2. For SF I chose SFA1. And for MK, I chose MK2.

Do you have an all-time favorite Boxart? Also, it would be fun to dream up box art for future games, like a Smash Bros. 6 or Capcom vs. SNK 3

Im absolutly right there with you in not joining the bandwagon that the SF6 CD art should have been the main box art for SF6. I get people really hate the luke one but that doesnt mean we gotta settle for less with the CD one.

Personally, I like the SVC Chaos boxart more than the CvS1 boxes. But that might have to do with personal bias Also, I like how you just had a blank spot for MK vs DC in the Mortal Kombat reel 14:58 don't think we wouldn't see that "Cheat Loaded" pop-up, lol

Some thoughts I personally will say Terry vs. Ryu feels way more appropriate than Kyo vs. Ryu for 2 major reasons -Terry and Ryu both fill that archetype of the wandering warrior seeking fights and improvement. Yeah, they're personalities are a bit different with Terry being more outgoing and Ryu being more reserved, but something about the two really feels like you'd get an intense yet friendly fight. -Both are protagonists of the games that serve as the progenitors of their respective companies fighting game legacies, without Street Fighter there is no Darkstalkers or MvC, and without Fatal Fury there isn't a KOF for Kyo to come from. Mortal Kombat is a great example of how less can be more, the logo is distinct yet not overwhelming, and can act as very good shorthand for communicating expectations people should have for the game, especially when combined with any entry specific flare added onto it. I find Sakura is kind of appropriate in the SFA2 art given that she's not just a new character but also one who practices a self-taught version of Ryu and Akuma's style of martial arts. Soul Calibur's box art I think does work, largely due to the logo. Having that cool angular blue logo contrasting with the warmer softer abstract art really makes the cover stand out. I think what also helps is the use of the Calibur in the title, calling to mind not just Excalibur but also Caliber as measure of quality, so Soul Calibur can bring to mind not just the sword itself but the testing of the souls of the cast. The logo when combined with the art, that still clearly shows human, creates a sense that something grander/epic is going on. So, while not clearly showcasing the fighting element of the game, it does give a sense of the scope of the game's world/story. It's also a cover that really screams turn of the millennium, something that could really only be done then and on a system like the Dreamcast.

I agree with you, I'd say making Kyo and Ryu rivals representing both companies made sense back then when Kyo was the main protagonist of The King of Fighters, despite them having very little in common, aside from being Japanese, in some aspects Ryo Sakazaki being Ryu's rival on the cover would make more sense The alternative SvC cover featuring Terry against Ken looks great and there has been some comparisons between both characters, though the similarities are pretty superficial (kind of like when Terry was added to Smash), in some aspects the SNK character that is more similar to Ken would be Robert García from Art of Fighting If a new Capcom vs SNK gets made it would be cool if every character had a rivalry with one another, I imagine things like: Ryu vs. Ryo, Ken vs. Terry, Chun-li vs. Mai, Yuri vs. Sakura, Luke vs. Gai Tendo, Akuma vs. Iori, Dee Jay vs. Bob Wilson, M.Bison vs. Rugal, Cammy vs. Blue Mary, etc.
@UltimateMovieMaster Жыл бұрын
@pablocasas5906 I would like to see some Ryu and Ryo interactions in any new VS. game, probably keep Ryu vs. Terry at the forefront and have a bunch of Ryu and Ryo stuff as extras -Special intro animations -Special dialogue -Bonus art, like say a picture of Ryo,Ryu, and Dan all doing their dp attack, bring it all full circle I can only begin to imagine how many interactions and deep cuts one could include I'm a new VS. game. Just with Ryu, you could probably give him custom intros with all 4 major protagonists
@baberuthless Жыл бұрын
I actually do agree Terry is the better rival To Ryu imo but I just found it odd they back peddled on Kyo being the rival since in all the marketing and in game he’s propped up as the main rival
@thekid8224 Жыл бұрын
Some of you guys show your bias terry is a popular character with the fans especially in the west but snk clearly prefer kyo. Kyo has been snk's mascot for a while now while mai is the female face of snk. Terry isn't a better rival for ryu they're not similar at all ryu is on a journey to better himself while Terry learnt how to fight to get his revenge. Ryu travels all over the world Terry lives in Southtown he never left it was Andy that travelled to Japan. Terry became a dad to Rock and has a relationship with blue mary, Ryu doesn't even have a student. Terry and Ken are better rivals

I've come around to actually liking SF6 box art tbh. Might be bias since I'm slowly picking up Luke to play as lol I remember the memes and hate for the box art when it was first revealed and I can see why since this game has such a distinct theme/identity compared to 5 so people were hoping for something more representation of that. But idk it's kind of hard to pinpoint why the box art grew on me. And yeah I agree that the art for the music of the game would have been too busy and hard to tell who's who if this was on store shelves at first glance. The dull colors don't really help either
@baberuthless Жыл бұрын
I respect that! For me even if the cover was replaced with my favorite character chun-li doing a similar pose I still wouldn’t like it. The art direction just seems lacking to me personally
