I've worked at EVO the last three tournaments, and yeah, highly recommended if you've never been. Not just the hype of being on the floor during the fights, but also the side tourneys, hands on with upcoming games or new 1up cabinets, the free arcade section, they're dead on that it's more like a convention and if you love the FGC scene, it's heaven. And you know, VEGAS.

Thank you Justin, Matt, and Maximilian for these found memories. My first actual tournament experience was going to the arcade for the weekly SF2CE ladder which had a side Daytona competition ladder. After appearing regularly, I got ropes in to working the registration table and making the brackets. Fun fact, got kicked out of Battle by The Bay for selling unlicensed T-shirt back in the dark ages because at that time selling merch was frowned upon. Really glad to hear that the big tournaments have become more like cons. One of my adult children went to evo just to support their friends who wanted to participate in Smash and wound up getting really in to MK after watching some of the spectacle. Sent this video to all my old FGC friends who should get a huge kick out of this.

Dang Justin had some hilarious stories on this topic 🤣 I only went to one tournament, which was CB in 2019 (the last year in the old building). I had such a blast and really wished I could've gone this year! I've missed out on going to tournaments and locals due to my schedule and the state of the world these past 2 years, but I miss meeting new people and bonding over some matches. You should give a shot to local tourneys in your area if there are any. If you happen to lose at that place, it's gonna feel a lot less bad than say, losing at a faraway event that costs a lot of money to travel, pay for a hotel, entry fee, etc.

Reminds me of my experience with online tournaments. Sure, it’s not as immersive as physical tournaments. Especially not one as popular as Evo. But it’s still just as intimidating especially whenever you’ve trained with 12 years of Fighting game experience to see where you measure up with the BEST OF THE BEST in whatever game it is you love.

The first tournament I remember going to was an X-Men vs. Street Fighter one up at Seattle Gameworks sometime around '97 or '98. After that, our local mall's Tilt held occasional tournaments for a variety of games in the late 90s to early 00s, some of which I personally organized. I've never made it to a standard Evo but I took time off work every summer to just stay at home and sit with streams open for that entire weekend. But I have made it out to all three Evo Japan events so far, the latest of which is my all-time favorite tournament memory. Day 3, I've got a front-row seat. I'm a Sakura main, and there's a Sakura in the top 8. Then there's a Sakura in the top 4. Then top 2. Oh, Karin resets the bracket, ah well it was a good run. Then Kasugano Residence appears on screen and Sakura 3-0's the championship set the rest of the way. That moment was so hype that, after it was over, I walked from Makuhari Messe over to Ikinari Steak and ordered one of their most expensive steaks to celebrate being able to get to watch that live in person from the front row.

My brother and I worked at a "Tilt" arcade in '00/'01 and four of us that worked there were big into fighting games. Getting MvC2 was a HUGE deal with us. We played whenever we could trying to unlock all the characters. When it dropped for Dreamcast we held an after hours "tournament" in the office amongst the employees. We ordered a pizza and told the confused delivery guy we were doing inventory.

this is a special podcast episode for me. I went to the first Capcom Cup 2014 at The Warfield in San Francisco. I remember this because I had just started watching Max's streams. I managed to sneak into VIP just to meet Max there right at the end of the tournament. I did get my photo with Max and as I was riding this wave of excitement I walk outside to get some fresh air and I met Justin Wong right outside the front door. Got my photos with Justin right then and there. So far this has been my only tourney experience. Still never been but want to go to EVO.

It would be so cool if you guys did an episode talking about locals. I run an organization that hosts locals in an area where the scene just didn't really exist and it's been such a great experience so far. Lot of work but also just a lot of fun and so worth it. I'd love to hear you guys' thoughts on growing your local scene, grassroots movements, and things like the recent sponsorship program from Junkfood that seems to be really helping local scenes a lot. My organization has had the pleasure of being a part of that program and we are absolutely loving the opportunity they've given us.

Don't know if asking what I'm about to is selfish, but could you do episodes about specific fighting game communities and your experiences with them? First tournament I joined was when I was 10 years old. Tekken Tag just got to the Infinity Arcade in Rowland Heights. My cousins and I frequented the PC cafe next door to play and Starcraft, and I told my cousins (who are older) that I was good at Tekken, so he paid my entry fee. Anyway, I didn't know shit about tag mechanics or anything, so I didn't win the tourney. But I did win a few matches just because I was really good at T3, and that felt really good at my age. And from that moment, I was known as the "little man" who played Tekken Tag at that arcade. I played at every monthly tournament, and even money matches in between (my cousins organized them and took some of the money lol). Then 2002 came around, and I heard about a big fighting game tournament happening in LA, but I skipped it since they said it was only Street Fighter. Then in 2003, one of my friends who went to Cal Poly Pomona told me Evo was being held there and they were gonna have Tekken. It was close-by too, so I just HAD to go. I remember competing in Evo 2k3 and 2k4 and doing fairly well, considering there were international players there. I didn't make it to top 8 or anything, but I did like 3-2 or 4-2, which was an accomplishment for me. People always ask, "whoa, you were there for moment 37?!" And I have to answer, "sorta". Because Tekken was already done by the time Third Strike finals came around, and I didn't play SF3 at the time. Consoles were set up next door and I played a lot of casual Tekken matches. I remember everyone getting loud, but I didn't actually see the Daigo parry until it was uploaded online lol. Even though I didn't compete in a major tourney until Evo 2010 for SF4, I did do a lot of local tourneys and eventually money matches in the Namco arcade in Vegas. My brother would take bets and we would make hundreds a night. Oh, and get this. The college I attended was Cal Poly Pomona, and you're damn right I played Third Strike in the school arcade, and SF4 at Super Arcade. When I graduated I moved to Oklahoma, which had a strong Tekken scene, and close to Texas for some awesome regionals. Now I live in Florida and I already signed up for Tekken 7 and Third Strike at CEO. I can't wait, since the Space Coast has a shit Tekken scene lol.
