You actually allude to a really interesting point that I hadn't considered before - people coming from team games have been conditioned to never go into a fight they don't think they can win, never start queuing up online until they have a really solid foundation, because they're going to be ridiculed if they don't carry their team from their first game. That's not something you have to worry about in any 1v1 type of game, whether it be a fighting game or some other kind of 1v1 game, and so that fear is misplaced.

Was thinking about why, when picking a new FG, I want to know everything from start and get scared cuz there's a million things to learn (especially as a novice in the genre), while I enjoy trying f2p card games and never think about knowing every card day 1. Maybe it's seeing high level FG games that make me put the bar stupid high? Even a complete beginner can understand parts of a pro match, like pressure, baits, combos, footsies, etc. The viral fighting game content is pretty much high-level plays (and sometimes braindead), but there's no viral stuff about "today I learnt Okizeme", "Today I practiced X vs Y matchup",... So maybe when I get back at the game, I instinctively wanna find the next step to reach, and based on the content I watch, I go "Ok, bought the game, now I'll have to... know fkin everything", and get discouraged because of that On the other hand, when I pick a card game (I tried many, and always love checking out new ones), I just check starter decks, play it, and seek for more strategies over time as I get new cards and watch what other players do, which... sounds exactly like what I should do for fighting games lol Maybe shame has something to do here to some extent too... When you get rekt in online FG, your character is supposed to be 100% able to beat the opponent depending on how you both play, and assuming you know all your moves, getting stomped feels like really sucking. Meanwhile, when I get stomped in a card game, it's not a "me" issue, it's a deck issue (I mean really stomped, not losing on rng). Maybe it's also easier to go "ok my deck is wrong, gonna search for a better strat" rather than "ok my fighting is weak, I gotta find what's wrong, how to fix it, and practice to make it natural", although the main problem is wanting to know everything, not seeking for optimization

Interesting. I feel the exact opposite when it comes to Card Games and Fighting Games. I get extremely angry when somebody beats my ass with some Meta Deck they just copied online. But while playing FGs I can for the most part say that they just outplayed me. Or maybe I played bad this round. But at least the opponent put effort in and didn´t just press copy/paste and play. I guess the focus is different. You say that you/your deck sucks. Meanwhile I say my opponent is strong(and sometimes full of bullshit😅)

I think that something we have to focus on in the fgc when it comes to onboarding is helping people to understand that FG aren't hard because of mechanics. They're hard because you're playing against another person. Unlike in pve games, in pvp games like fg, your opponent is ALWAYS trying to win. I've noticed that alot of people who are extremely new to fg play them like they're single player games with no regard for their opponent and get upset when they start getting counterplayed. If you never accept that there's another person on the other end, then it doesn't matter how good your combos are or how much game knowledge you have, you're probably going to lose. If your friend asks you some variation of "What's the best (move, character, strategy, combo)?" when starting then they're probably coming at it with the wrong mentality.

Funnily enough for me as a souls player I enjoyed the demo of the most complex fighting game (Tekken8) more than anything else My first experience with non smash fighting games was Guilty Gear Strive, a friend convinced me to play it and I caved after the release of Testament cause I loved the design and overall vibe of the character, I did not enjoy a single second of that game, I played for 15 hours, It took me several hours to complete the tutorial because I got stuck on a motion input tutorial for like half the time, then I learned more or less how testament worked and I went online, I mostly lost but I actually won some games since im a stubborn ass Souls player that will do a boss until they memorize the enemies attack patterns and bust them, but all that time I had no real fun because a lot of times I wasn't fighting against the enemy but against the controller, "oh your mind reacted fast enough to that and you tried to use an input attack that counters it but you were to slow so you failed" or "you tried to do a cool combo that you memorized and found a good situation to use but the input attack on the combo was done to slow so you finished it halfway" In souls like games its me vs the enemy, I lost, it was MY fault and I know why and how In GGST it was the enemy and the controller vs me, and I fucking hated it Yesterday I downloaded SF6 demo, I played for around an hour, I did enjoy using modern controls more than playing GGST but in this case I just didn't vibe with how the game works, it felt boring mostly, maybe I would need to get the game and try online to actually play other people and maybe I would enjoy it but then we enter into the hurdle of "why would I buy a new fighting game for 60€ that im not 100% unsure if I would enjoy when I did not enjoy the last one and the demo wasn't really that enjoyable" Then we reach the Tekken 8 Demo, "Oh I can use 4 different characters instead of the dumb Popeye of SF6 (sry Luke fans)" "Oh wait it doen't have motion inputs" "Oh the tutorial is not bad I have to actually fight CPU Ghosts of increasing level using the knowledge I acquire slowly" "Cool, I pressed left punch left kick right kick and the game basically said Congrats you discovered a new moveset of this character (cause theres 90 billion)" "Okay these super moves are kinda cool (you can only use 1 per round, I like that) and the stages are pretty dope" "Wait, this character has so many dope moves and I do not need any meter to use them unlike those other games" "Oh cool I can fight a bunch of CPU ghosts in ghost fight and theres a list of them per skill level" "Wait its been 3 hours already what happened" I really had the time of my life, I just did not buy the game immediately because when went to the steam store page the recent reviews were mostly negative cause apparently Bamco did some stupid monetization shit and theres some serious balance issues but I have been looking into it and im seriously considering getting it if things improve a bit Conclusion, I hate motion inputs, Modern controls are okay but I found SF6 boring, and Tekken is very cool but capitalism To add an extra, I would have played SF6 if it wasnt 60€ and instead free to play which I think both SF6 and Tekken8 should be specially if they insist so much on putting a lot of dumbass microtransactions into their games

And we did so, and I'm glad I did, because it allowed me to play a character that I otherwise wouldn't really think to, only to find out that their playstyle really jells well with me (That being Yuel). So if you're looking to branch out a bit in terms of characters but not sure who to go for and you got a buddy or hell just do it against CPUs, just randomize for a bit and go for it!

I dislike the common defense of “Fighting Games aren’t hard” from people trying to defend them. Because in all honesty, they are hard. Inputs, spacing, strict timings, and a whole load of other things that generally make them both unique from the skills tested by other games and just generally unpleasant to try and learn from scratch. As someone who enjoys them, however, I do still want to defend them, usually with the defense that they’re learnable, and that the difficulty is worthwhile. Saying “No they’re not hard actually” just kinda feels invalidating to the newbies who’re struggling. Choosing to not only acknowledge that difficulty, but celebrate it as one of the things that makes these games rewarding does a much better job with at least making players leave with a positive image in their minds.

Base Tekken is actually quite simple. You have directional imputs that do exactly that: launch an attack or move your character into that direction. And two "hand" buttons and two "leg" buttons. Hold a direction to dodge or approach and use one of the "hand" or "leg" buttons to start a combo.

I think you're blatantly wrong on this, Gekko. I got into GGST shortly after the release of Brisket, which, I am told, is one of the easier fighting games to get into, and I still only barely lasted a year (which includes a multi-month break in there). I say this as a League of Legends player: The knowledge checks in that game (and, as far as i know, the genre as a whole) are simply too much. When an attack animation is a state that leaves someone vulnerable, what someone's combos are, how their specials, supers and normals works, are all essential to fighting at even a medium level. Add to that having to know your own char's combos and their different routes, and you have a fuckton of work to play at the low-to-mid lvl of the game (floor 7-8 in GGST). Even after literal hours of practice, I couldn't get the wakeup super to work more than 1 in 10 times and I never hit a single DP input outside of practice. If you want to play in a community, it's even worse. The GGST community I was in had maybe 5 players under Floor 10 and, as far as I understood after asking around, that was more-or-less the norm (scaled to size, obviously). Hell, there are "Beginner tournaments", which allow people with char lvl 250 to still enter. I nigh-exclusively played Giovanna and I don't think I ever got her over 100, so you can probably see why I find that ridiculous as all hell. So, unless you want to keep losing 40-2 (that's a real scoreline I had against someone from my group in a single session), you have to start learning about safejumps, tick-throws, fuzzies and all that other shit. Which would have taken hours more time I refused to put in. Maybe I just suck at mechanics more than other people, but I decided to quit because it was simply getting too frustrating, as I couldn't progress further without studying GGST like I would a school/uni subject. So, with all that said, I think I can safely say that fighting games are scary as shit and I have no idea what you're on about.

If there's one thing I've come to learn in the last couple months of trying to get more into fighters proper, or at least through the modern selection of fighters,...and it's that the FGC goddamn sucks. Like damn, there is so much hostility and condescension towards newcomers, it's no wonder so few want to stick around. Even the people who try to help by giving tips generally aren't good at giving advice and just make things worse. The biggest enemy to the FGC is the FGC itself. Besides that, I've realized that a lot of the fighters I liked and wanted to learn were the wrong ones. When it comes to the FGC, they might as well not exist: "Daemon Bride", "Spectral vs Generation", "Nitroplus Blasterz", -redacted-, "Chaos Code", and so on. Or worse, be considered kusoge. But that very much is a me issue. It's my fault for having incorrect tastes after all and I won't necessarily blame others for that...as frustrating as it still is. So yeah, I've mainly been trying "Granblue Fantasy Verus Rising" (Zooey main) and "Under Night 2" (Mika main). The former hasn't been going well much at all. Every time I take even a week off and return, it's like I'm trying to relearn how to do even the most basic of things. The latter is fairing a bit better but not by that much. I can at least pull of a combo consistently I guess. Maybe "Skullgirls" (Annie/solo main) might also count since I actually have an IRL friend that plays it but I only see them like once or twice a month, and even then we don't play it every time. Oh well, sucks to suck I suppose. As you folks put it, I just gotta "git gud". Play thousands of matches getting my face caved in until I finally get it.

Not unexpected, since the people that'll stick with Xrd are mostly veterans who prefer it over Strive, but it has given me some determination to get better. Some of the main things I think that can turn people away from fighting games are the inputs and blockstrings. It's very difficult to even activate certain moves, let alone time them or use them properly and overall it feel like the controls are both way to precise but also really laggy, since many combos basically have to be input before the previous move even hits in order to not get stopped by hit-lag. As for block strings, I think it's self explanatory why new players won't find that fun, wondering when it's their turn to play

The extension of "most people want to land one move" that beginners don't learn for too long is RESIST THE URGE TO PUSH BUTTONS. Most of the low ranks in any game just mash moves and push buttons in all situations and what separates them higher ranks (generally) is where people stop doing that. Doing nothing is a choice and most people miss it because it's not a button, but you can watch some of the best players in all games going back all the way whose main skill was doing nothing until their opponent messed up. If you practice resist ingthe deep seeded urge to panic and mash, you're going to start seeing all the places you can blow your opponent up. Just letting them fall on their face, instead of you tumbling yourself onto their fist, will win you so many matches. Also just go and get rolled and you'll see that you're not as bad and they're not as good as in your head, and no one's going to message you and bully you afterwards or even remember they played you.

Fighting games experience as a newbie Funnily enough for me as a souls player I enjoyed the demo of the most complex fighting game (Tekken8) more than anything else My first experience with non smash fighting games was Guilty Gear Strive, a friend convinced me to play it and I caved after the release of Testament cause I loved the design and overall vibe of the character, I did not enjoy a single second of that game, I played for 15 hours, It took me several hours to complete the tutorial because I got stuck on a motion input tutorial for like half the time, then I learned more or less how testament worked and I went online, I mostly lost but I actually won some games since im a stubborn ass Souls player that will do a boss until they memorize the enemies attack patterns and bust them, but all that time I had no real fun because a lot of times I wasn't fighting against the enemy but against the controller, "oh your mind reacted fast enough to that and you tried to use an input attack that counters it but you were to slow so you failed" or "you tried to do a cool combo that you memorized and found a good situation to use but the input attack on the combo was done to slow so you finished it halfway" In souls like games its me vs the enemy, I lost, it was MY fault and I know why and how In GGST it was the enemy and the controller vs me, and I fucking hated it Yesterday I downloaded SF6 demo, I played for around an hour, I did enjoy using modern controls more than playing GGST but in this case I just didn't vibe with how the game works, it felt boring mostly, maybe I would need to get the game and try online to actually play other people and maybe I would enjoy it but then we enter into the hurdle of "why would I buy a new fighting game for 60€ that im not 100% unsure if I would enjoy when I did not enjoy the last one and the demo wasn't really that enjoyable" Then we reach the Tekken 8 Demo, "Oh I can use 4 different characters instead of the dumb Popeye of SF6 (sry Luke fans)" "Oh wait it doen't have motion inputs" "Oh the tutorial is not bad I have to actually fight CPU Ghosts of increasing level using the knowledge I acquire slowly" "Cool, I pressed left punch left kick right kick and the game basically said Congrats you discovered a new moveset of this character (cause theres 90 billion)" "Okay these super moves are kinda cool (you can only use 1 per round, I like that) and the stages are pretty dope" "Wait, this character has so many dope moves and I do not need any meter to use them unlike those other games" "Oh cool I can fight a bunch of CPU ghosts in ghost fight and theres a list of them per skill level" "Wait its been 3 hours already what happened" I really had the time of my life, I just did not buy the game immediately because when went to the steam store page the recent reviews were mostly negative cause apparently Bamco did some stupid monetization shit and theres some serious balance issues but I have been looking into it and im seriously considering getting it if things improve a bit Conclusion, I hate motion inputs, Modern controls are okay but I found SF6 boring, and Tekken is very cool but capitalism To add an extra, I would have played SF6 if it wasnt 60€ and instead free to play which I think both SF6 and Tekken8 should be specially if they insist so much on putting a lot of dumbass microtransactions into their games (Now i gotta try GFV)

And then there's Skullgirls where playing pvp will be the equivalent of signing up be a punching bag. I'm not a good player, but I'm definitely an avarage player in most Fgs, I'm able to be a challenge to my opponents in Sf, Them's Fighting herds, and Guilty Gear. But Skullgirls make me feel like I'm the AI on easy mode, i get mixed by everything, i get destroyed by combos, and my combos aren't the most optimal thing (even if they do a good amount of damage) If i manage to take a round or kill a character it'll alredy feel like a victory. But i still enjoy Skullgirls Multiplayer.

by any chance have you ever talked about the "Wake up super" Strat. My friend just got into fighting games and he abuses the hell out of things like reaction supers and rage arts, and just wonders why I get so irritated by it. I didn't know how to describe it to him, and I can't say it's not a bad start, but more like.... cheap? Maybe it's a Strat that works on lower level players because I don't mind it in granblue where I am higher rank, but in tekken 8 where we practically started at the same time but I just have more knowledge in fighting games, It makes me want to eat myself.

I didn't spend $60 on a game plus bundles and DLC-exclusive characters just to get my ass kicked. I LOVE fighting games, but I'm a perfectionist. If I continue playing fighting games (despite my love for it), it will only be a matter of time before I destroy my own house because I absolutely HATE losing (being a perfectionist and all). I play single-player games where I can always feel like a badass even when I die multiple times.

I literally just got guilty gear strive today and I’m stoked on getting my ass kicked. My first fighting game experience was smash and I’ve clocked in about 4000 something hours, for reference. I’ve tried 2D fighters and they seem generally pretty easy. It’s just fundies. I love fundies. Guilty gear though? It’s gonna be a monster dude. I’ve only watched gameplay but I fell in love with the game for reasons I won’t mention because I’d be gushing for who knows how long. So yeah, wish me luck. That said, I’m gonna try taking your advice, oh wise Australian man, and start with an easy character for familiarity, then work my way up. I’m gonna start with Potemkin because I’m a “goo goo grappler main” so he feels most at home like any fighting game, then after I get comfy I’ll switch to my beloved ✨Faust✨. I have a couple others I wanna try but my first objective is *survive*. I reeeaally have to get used to the movement in airdash games because, yknow, goo goo grappler main, and I’m used to more patient matches that put majority focus on fundies and not mechanical skill. That being said, I appreciate the advice oh wise Australian man. I finally get to play one of my favorite games ever, hopefully I’ll still have the will to live.

I would say it depends on the fighting game kinda If you havent picked one up they WILL be intimidating and there is really no way to solve that. How long that lasts depends on you and the game itself. Now it can also be game dependant. Even haven olayed fighting games myself I just cant wrap my head around Tekken 8 and just havent played. Its too different/complex and even if it wasnt the SHEER AMMOUNT of moves every character has just turns me off. There is actually too many things going on to keep up
@danieldameron22458 ай бұрын
ive always had a hard time with fighting games. im more of a co-op kind of player. i prefer to have a good time with friends over seeing who is the best, so its been hard to find reason to play these games. ive also had issues trying them. picking a character wasnt easy at first. i understand i prefer a more brain dead strat of being big and painful. but i cant stand the lab. being in a padded box for more then 10 minutes tends to bore me and make me turn things off instead of going on. it is at this point trial by fire has been my best friend... even if it hurts. all this to say that its not impossible, but depending on who you are it may be harder then for others.

Yeah, you know, before GGST the only twp fighting games I touched were Tatsunoku vs Capcom from wii (I always played in easy mode) and Smash Bros (There I was a bit better), but never a comand fighting game. It wasn't that hard to get used to, I started with Potemkin becouse he just looked easy to use and also hehe funny glue eater. I didn't took me too much time to get used to (40h already), my neutral keep improoving and I have pretty good anti air reads, I just lack on pressure

Bro, it's not hard, if you have friends just do this: 1. Buy a game 2. Play the tutorial 3. Play a bit of the offline mode, to see the moves you have in your disposal (optional) 4. Meet with your fiends in someone's house. 5. Teach them the basics. 6. PLAY!! You all will suck, but I learnt a lot playing DBFZ with my friends, and you will learn a lot more that what you think.

And just so yall know. If you see a video like this, and you wanna get into fighting games. Do that. But. Be aware. You are not gonna be able to learn everything off of youtube. You are not gonna be able to learn everything you need off of just playing. You are going to need to find a community and go meet people, ask them questions. And a lot of those communities are not perfect or great. That's fine. But. Get in there be willing to ask people questions be willing to come off like a total scrub. If you end up in a community making fun of you because you're asking questions, you didn't need to be there anyway lmao. By that same token. Do not be afraid of the lab. "But it's boring!" "But just sitting there failing to hit combos is scary" "Do you see how much shit is on the UI? What the fuck is a delay tech, I don't even know how fast a frame is --" Don't worry about any of that mess either. Ask questions. Poke around. You'll get to stuff whenever you get to stuff. And finally, maybe you're looking at ranks or whatever, or you're already in the community but you plateau'd or you feel like a fraud. Go back in there. Get on the stuff you didn't wanna do. If you hit a point where you got a high rank and thought everyone was just an untouchable god - They weren't. But you probably didn't wanna fight through dealing with the lab, or spacing or figuring out whatever the hell "Neutral" is. That's fine. Go back and do it. It's not hard. You're not trash, it's just there's a lot of junk about fighting games that's gonna make you think, and you have to be willing to re-evaluate stuff. Don't sweat it, enjoy the ride.

So I am very much not a FG player, though I am a bit interested. Your videos actually keep me looking at them, so thanks bro Rather than tips on how to get started/better though, any knowledge about how to find the most fun in them? I'm not a competitive person by nature, so crushing my friends beneath my heel only goes so far in making me want to keep playing, and it feels really bad and uninteresting when I just get stonewalled. I don't feel the drive to get better just for its own sake - gotta be fun. How to do it in FGs?

Something that helped me was learning things specifically to be silly or cool. For example, I used to play Axl, so I learned how to use his time stop well, even though it wasn’t optimal, because it was cool, and you can taunt in the middle of the game without your opponent being able to do anything about it.

no real way around, its just one of those hobbies that requires time but like the vid said it doesnt have to be so bad. I personally just focus on "small victories" over wins; consistently hitting anti-airs, landing a combo I found online coz it looks cool etc. Then move on to the next thing slowly developing a full gameplan, then it all starts to fall into place forming a playstyle

I won't lie, I mostly haven't gotten into fighting games because I haven't found one with a character that appeals to me enough to push through the Sucking At This stage. Arguably my fault for preferring anime aesthetics and wanting to play a woman but *not* finding any appeal in overbearing horniness, but it is what it is.

Depends, if you like more fast paced and flashy games then strives for you, street fighter is also great but is more slow paced and revolves more around strategy, footsies etc. Both games are beginner friendly, I suggest u watch some tournaments and pick whatever game seems the most fun and interesting to you.

As much as I want to find excuses for the genre and blame the brain rot among teenagers for its downfall, it simply isn't that clean cut. Fighting games have fallen behind the times in terms of the user experience. They can't be bothered to implement a proper tutorial in most of them, let alone tips for dealing with specific match-ups. Not everyone is looking to learn shit off forums and KZbin as a full time job. Some just want to jump in, play and see noticeable progress or at least be able to have some fun playing from the get-go. Fighting games do a terrible job at separating the casual and competitive experience compared to other genres. Games like Counter Strike and League take a lot of knowledge and practice to excel at a high level too, but you can at least have some fun and get used to the game playing at a lower standard without getting absolutely crushed. In fighting games, that is simply not possible and as long as there are no resources for beginners to learn to play properly, they won't be making satisfying progress either.

Extremely specific advice from me: if you mostly play fighting games with your brother and hr keeps beating you no matter how much you learn, that doesn't make you trash that will never be good at the genre. It just means he is also continuously improving. Test your skills against other opponents as well.

Fighting games are harbage and the community is small and garbage. You have to spend 50000 hours to play at even a begginer level, that's way nobody plays them except a very small dying community,
