Do you guys ever wonder about the wrong people learning and getting your stuff? For instance i was asked to teach alternative high school students who are in gangs etc. I don't feel comfortable teaching them how to be better bullies.
@Bazilisk_AU3 жыл бұрын
... Alternative... High School Students ? in Gangs ? ... you mean in a Band ? (I'm sorry, I couldn't not creatively misinterpret what you meant xD) I for one wouldn't worry about who learns, not just from a statistical point of view but from a mindset point of view. As a martial artist, it's not our place to police other people's morality. Perhaps I live in a different world where I can't conceptualise 'gangs'.

Much, much more respectable than a dude who thinks he knows exactly that one move or technique for any and every situation. We call those type of guys "smoke sellers" over here. Kudos to you, Mike. @@drummachine5787 Not much to it. Almost never in my adult life have i been involved in so much as a shouting match. I like this stuff as a hobby, but walking away long before things get sketchy is my prefered tactic. Once though, a big guy didnt like the cut of my jib at a party. Couldnt apologise, couldnt keep my distance, anything. Stand up fight, or even on the ground, id have been dead. Guy came at me on a couch though, got himself stuck, and couldn't get leverage to get up, or get a hit in. I stuck it out till he blew himself out, don't think i even got a proper strike in, just tangled the guy up and put pressure on places he didnt want pressure. At one point he tried to lift me and that pretty much just resulted in him becoming immobile. I'm no tough guy, it was scary as hell, i was shaken after, but i walked away with nothing but some rugburn from the couch, and so did random big guy. Even in cities like Rio de Janeiro, if you look at the statistics by neighborhood, you will see a brutal difference. In what we call South Zone (middle class/upper middle class) we have European homicide rates, despite much worse rates of robbery or theft. Basically, as with most places, not being a member of a gang reduces your risk of being murdered to almost zero.

I absolutely love this. I cant wait to have some conversations & viewpoints from you guys on this sort of topic. I have actually been talking about this a lot the last few weeks with my students. I'd offer up, on the couch situation here, the only thing that could save Ryan's position IS jiu jitsu. No biting, bent wrist, eye gouging from there, not going to get you the escape in real life. And this is where all the controversy would be...when I say jiu jitsu, I mean REAL jiu jitsu, not sport based point fighting. Ryan does real Jiu-Jitsu, I think most guys that started back in the 90s do. That's why hes so comfortable fighting there. Somewhere down the line, lots of jiu jitsu gyms took out the punches and kicks and became more sport. And the sport is fun, but if your only escapes are basic shrimps or a bridge, youd be in big trouble in that position. Thank you guys sooo much for putting this one up!!! Awesome stuff to open a dialogue that needs to happen.

Give me a school teaching t-shirt chokes and techniques focused on navigating our current reality every day of the week! We need people studying and compiling traditional training just like other historians. Still, the past 25-30 years or so have been the greatest leap in true martial arts knowledge, training and skill in the history of man! It's amazing to see how much more sophisticated martial arts training is now! We need modern Martial arts that are more than just sport ,that reflect the times, and I think this kind of training really captures a lot of it. This is really exciting stuff! I would be sick to my stomach about the liability if I ran it though. I would love to see a video about how you manage the liability, what it takes to insure a gym like that, and If I am just spewing a bunch of anxiety, please explain why (Feel free to mock me!) Not going to lie I'm interested in the most affordable solutions you found for reinforcing things-- because lumber had been unbelievably high. This is cool stuff! I think if Icy Mike is going in this direction with his coverage, it's a great situation for everyone involved and perfectly lines up with what I come here to watch

I trained with at a club years ago where we would try different scenarios, slamming and pinning each other onto the walls was one we did a lot, our instructor often used to randomly turn off all the lights so you were sparring in darkness . I've been in that situation, pinned to a sofa. It was really hard to get the other guy off me, your natural instinct is to try to push the other guy off, but there is nothing solid to push off of, you end up wasting energy while they conserve theirs by mostly using their weight to hold you down.

So true! I figured this out mostly because i have cross sparred a lot of wrestlers in many places. And boy they are different from Judokas!!
