The training takes place in Norway, close to the Russian border. It comes as tensions between Russia and the West run high, with the UK Defence Secretary warning countries must "defend against Russian aggression."

+Mats RB Not really, the Royal Marines have been to our Mountain Warfare Training Center at Bridgeport CA on numerous occasions. We have our own facilities and have been adept at cold weather combat since the intervention in Russia and the Chosin reservoir.

We Norwegians USED to be the specialists on cold weather operations in NATO. During the 70s and 80s our training was among the very best, developed from the Americans. Many of our allies would come here to learn from us. But the continuous downgrading of the Norwegian military, combined with the fact that many of our allies have stepped up the game means that we just simply are not where we should be any more. This should be our game, but we have dropped the ball.

Eh? I was a border ranger in the army, means we patrol the border and is the first line of defense between Norway and Russia. The captain in the company had been given the equivalent of a medal of honor from Afghanistan, we also had winter survival training from a guy that had crossed the south pole alone and only with the stuff he could carry with him. It took him three months. We are dead qualified when it comes to winter warfare. Not to mention most Norwegians learn to ski at an age of 5.

Arishtat we have trained with Scandinavians several times. I agree that taking advice from the britsh isn't the best idea. Hell those very British troops were probably trained by sweds, Finnish, or norwegians. But this is the media, they don't really know what they are talking about.

"You just have to suck it up and go on" said the marine. He's absolutely right. I've been there myself when I served in the Norwegian infantry. It's no fun when you wake up in the morning and have to exit your warm sleeping bag. You're still tired and most of your clothes are wet, cold and maybe even a little frozen. Then as you start doing your chores you start getting warm and drying up your clothes again. Life improves gradually and you're ready for another day.

As a Canadian Vet, we trained US Marines and British Royal Marines in Cold weather fighting and survival. Having grown up and playing as a kid in the Winters it was a natural thing for us....given that a lot of Americans and even some Brits have never seen snow (or at least as cold and as much as we got) I recognized the Northern born Marines vs the Southern ones even without talking to them. A lot of fun, great bunch of Men and found memories. I respect all warriors on the side of Freedom and even our "so called" enemies in the Russians and Chinese. We can't control our governments, but we have more in common with all warriors than we don't.

As a norwegian this really entertains me. I love the thought of me outskiing top trained marines, and im 15. They really should focus more on cold weather based training. And btw, I think they dont give enough credits to the norwegians involved. No british officer could have done this type of training without a norwegian somewhere backing him up.

I deployed to Narvik, Norway in 1987 with the USMC back when the USMC was there on regular deployments. I was totally impressed with the Norwegian Home Guard troops, I hope to go back there some day on vacation. I asked one of the Norwegian troops how long Spring lasts, and he responded; "About a day."

While watching the start I was like: What the U.S. Army has no mountain troops organized as bataillons? We Germans have multiple Gebirgsjäger bataillions. And while we might not learn directly from the Norwegians, we appreciate the opportunity to train in other spaces other than our mountains (which are much warmer and much smaller).

Mc Mortimer first off, if I'm not mistaken these are typical infantry marines, most of whom have never operated in arctic environments, so obviously someone who's lived in one for 15 years would have developed greater skills then some marines have in a few days. Secondly, movement though important, is not the most important element of warfighting, do you think you could grapple, outshoot, or Out-ruck one of these fine marines? Arctic environment or not.

One of the better military winter training documentaries I've seen. When I was a Nordic ski patroller in the snow belt of NW Pennsylvania I trained US Army ROTC cadets in winter survival for several years. After an in-depth classroom talk we would go on an overnight survival bivouac, inserting into the country via Chinook helicopter. The cadets, met of whom were airborne qualified, always came away with a new appreciation of what it takes to do even the simplest thing in very cold weather and deep snow. Keeping your clothing and sleeping relatively DRY is of prime importance. Wet clothing and bag mean you will suffer and maybe get hypothermic.

I did most of my mandatory service up there! Aaaaah, memories... We arrived January 8th. I saw the sun again sometime in the middle of February. They were in the field three nights? We were out there 18 nights after two months of training. I remember one day the temp got up to about negative 25 degrees C. That was a good day. The rest of the time it hovered around negative 30-35... good times :)

Interesting that very few units or soldiers in general in Britain and America are trained properly for cold climates. My dad was in a NATO exercise with Americans back in the 70s while serving in the Norwegian army and the Americans had huge problems with the snow, while Norwegians having grown up in the snow, had none. Every single Norwegian soldier learns how to use skiis(pretty much every civilian knows it too) and to generally work well in the snow and cold conditions. Weird that since both America and Britain have plenty of cold and snowy areas, you would think they too would prioritize it a bit more. I guess its partly cultural.

Scotland doesn't have mountains, so no it doesn't snow all year round. 4400 feet is not a mountain and the difference in temperature at 4400 feet from sea level is like 3 degrees. England is a wishy washy country, their idea of a "mountain" is what most other people regard as a pretty big hill. I live on the coast of California, and there are mountains with roads over them 45 minutes from my house the same size as the biggest mountain in England.

Stolen glory. The training in Norway, Sweden, and Finland, for example, are under the best cold weather training regime, and trainers and been going on for close to 400 years in Swedens case (counting the northern units then)). Started with Swedish king Charles X's change of military structure.

+Paul Snape It's also just typically light on facts. The US is also an Arctic country. Units do train above the circle in Alaska. Marines can train in areas that receive more snow and are colder on average, than Finland. The issue is that the force is so large, if you train at the Mountain Warfare Training Center in California, or above the circle in Alaska, you either do the summer or winter course.So guys who do the summer course, by chance, might never cycle into a winter training environment. Or even serve in a place that gets below freezing.

I served in GSV Kirkenes in Norway (main job to prevent boarder crossing and recon the area) and Im quite an experienced artic recon soldier. We operate 24/7 no matter the weather and temp. Driven a lot of snowmobiling and skiing with heavy bagpack pluss weapon in temp down to -49 Celsius, thats fucking cold I'll tell u that :P

Dick Varga So are other nations like the British. The SAS swear by using old tech. Look at the toughest place in Afghanistan, Helmand Province. The US couldn't capture it so asked the British. The British not only captured it but held onto it for years before admitting that they couldn't go any further because their prime minister at that time, Gordon Brown, was refusing to send out equipment that they needed. But they captured and held it for years by using very old tech from the Vietnam era. And they and other nations are trained in harsh conditions and bad rations. its all part and parcel of being a soldier.

I just believe that Siberian & Northern Euro Russians are by upbringing more cold hardy & used to poor living conditions than American soldiers from temperate & semi tropical climates and more comfortable middle class life at least initially until they acclimatise. Some USAmericans are from cold winter stares, the northern tier stares & Alaska but most are not. I suspect the old tech vietnam era fighting, holding villages was old even then. Didn't the Brits use similar tech in 1900 against the Boers ? Against Afghans for 50 years before that?

As a former server of the norwegian border-patrol (military) I can conclude that these marines would have a tough time getting through the basic winter training conducted by norwegian military force. Also adding that almost everyone has to serve compulsory military service in Norway, a large quantum of our population has the knowledge needed to survive in such climates. Makes one proud to be norwegian.

Back in 97 I had the pleasure of treating many frostbitten Marines, freezing their nuts off because they were soaked in sweat from working. They had been wearing their full winter gear while working or manouvering/skiing. And from this video, the Royals did not teach these Marines how to dress in winter either. 3+ layers of warm winter clothing while building snowcaves.. Madness! Thats your warm clothes soaked in sweat, in -20C(or lower).

+HMSDaring1 Well the US Army has trained Mountain Divisions I think they train up in Alaska at NWTC but Arctic training for the USMC, I think this is a great idea they just need to keep some kind of proficiency going, I am sure when I was in the Navy the Booties worked with US troops in Norway before now though, not sure which branch they were , I remember a RM telling me on an Ex the weather closed in and they were pretty much stuck but the US forces just had some C-5s roll in and take them all the way home lol

+Pablo Jay you are right Pablo, they've cross trained with each other for years - I met a USMC Gunnery Sgt in Norway who I then went to Alaska with, he was a cold weather warfare expert and an Avalanche risk specialist - seconded to train with Royal Marines and cross pollinate their skills back and forth - this isn't a new story at all, just a strange attempt at spin I think.

I met the British marines once when they had winter exercises in Sweden. They had to quit the training and go back to the mountain station because it was too windy. Indeed it was hurricane strength winds, but I was still a bit surprised.

Odd they don't mention two of the most important things in cold weather activity. The first is don't overdress, with some of the activity these were doing at only -19 they seemed too heavily dressed. Being over dressed causes you to sweat and that is one of the worst things you can do in cold environments. Admittedly it was only -19 so it would not have been a concern unless their was a good wind but when its gets to -40 skin exposure and breathing become much more critical. Skin can freeze in minutes and you can get frost damage to your lungs. Its not that big a thing but you have to be careful. Admittedly I have never been in the military but grew up in fairly cold environments. As a kid we used to play outside in -19. The Canadian army has been training with members of the Canadian Rangers who are part time soldiers who are Inuit.

I remember when I was in the army here in Norway, we where on a 1 week skiingtrip where all we had of food and fuel was what we could carry in our backpack and a sledge. and we lived in these small "knapptelt" these diamondshape cloth that you put together to a larger square, the heat came from a primus wich provided also heat to melt snow to water. While on manouver we had to put snow into our canteen and put it at our body to melt the water :-) lost alot of weight that trip hehe but it was fun, bathing was done running out in the snow rolling around and rub in the snow on our bodies hehe cooooold :-) I was a so cold "Tetningslist" the guy who sleeps at the outer edge in the tent, that is the coldest point, every morning I had to rip the sleepingbag from the tent as it was frozen to the walls hehe. But I have a high tolerance for cold so thats okey for me :-) I miss the army life :-)

Jungle seems to be the toughest because of extensive risks of disease. Attrition is simply higher there.

The Norwegian military has the best winter training in the world, the winter school as it is called and they are without a doubt one of the best in the world at this subject. A shame the Norwegians who contributed here didn't get any credit. Strange that they keep emphasising that the Royal Marines are the ones who are training the US Marines here, considering they are in a Norwegian military camp...

A lot of Marines are from the Midwest and South. They grow up in warm climates and usually have never put skis on in their lives. 10th Mountain Division should be sent to do this type pf training. They're specific mission is to fight in arctic and mountain conditions. That being said, I doubt the entirety of the Russian army is specialized in Arctic warfare, it's an incredibly tough environment, if any military would know how to fight in the freezing cold and snow it would be the Finnish, who beat the soviets who wholeheartedly.

well, technically, porsanger is further east than Turkey -which is mostly in asia. In any case, if you listen carefully, he did not actually claim that norway was in eastern europe. He was referring to allied personell being in the baltics, which is in eastern europe, then he proceeded saying that they were "here" (referring to norway) for the same reason.

look, theres a reason our military can train our soldiers to a higher standard than the training the US military can provide.. yes you beat us on man power, but for the US military to be able to train their military to the standards of ours would be too costly, the UK military is a lot smaller than the US thus we are able to train our soldiers to a higher standard than yours, its fact, if you're making honest comparisons id compare the US marines to the same standard as the British Army.. US marine training 13 weeks (basic) British Army training 14 weeks (basic) again this is comparing your 'marines' to our regular British Infantry training Royal marine commandos 32 weeks parachute regiment 28 weeks (could be wrong) SAS training, im not sure, i know numerous people have died during the training and its Brutal.. i guess it has to be since they're the best in the world at what they do!

nano4778​​​ Not really. The US is probably the only country that can maintain a professional force that size. Comparing the Royal Marines with USMCs is invalid though. The Royal Marines are a light infantry force while USMCs is another military branch. Basic USMCs who've gone through basic and SOI training are just qualified infantryman, not ''commandos''. But the USMCs have elite units that are better trained than the Royal Marines. Such as the Marine Raider Regiment and Reconnaissance Marines. Numerous people have died training at BUDs and Ranger School also.

man, don't pack the snow, it takes twice as long to pile and is not really needed. Also I maintain the cold air shelf does not work. I have tried it both ways many times and the cold air shelf is just extra work. Put a pack in the door to plug it or jam a little snow so you only have a few air holes.
