I remember my cold weather training...sleeping with your clothes on or tucked into your mummy bag. Warming water and washing using our helmets . Warming our Quonset huts using oil burning pot stoves. That was no where like this training, our training was on Mauna Loa , Hawaiian volcano. SEMPER Fi....1961-1965

Of course they are. They are good at what they do but they ain't got the grit and toughness of a para or marine. Even the bog standard, bottom of the barrel soldier is tougher.than the pampered fly boys..

- 25C? Here in Canada, we look FORWARD to when it WARMS UP to -25 in winter! We were still flying when it was -35C, and finally shut down when it hit -45C. In the field - we were doing Exercises at -40C at CFB Wainwright. Of course, we just went through a summer heat wave where it hit +37C. Welcome to Alberta! Poor guys down in BATUS were probably dying in the heat (just like the rest of us!). It was still FUN when I was in the Military! Flying around mountains is also VERY dangerous - one thing you CAN'T see is that the winds can often deflect off the mountains and go straight UP or STRAIGHT DOWN - either way, it can crash an aircraft in MOMENTS!

It's pretty fun for a Swede to see this who has been out for weeks in the Norwegian and Swedish mountains in the winter and having survived quite pleasantly. We use skis - its actually requires much less effort and is a lot faster to move compared to walking even in the summer. Skiiing works fine with a backpack 20-25kg..

I live in Colorado for my hole life Respect for anybody that fights or goes to work when is below zero .you really learn what you are made of and how strong your mind is i Cycle rain or snow im crazy like that .

Dont worry m8. If you are born on it, molded by it it becomes a part of you. Going camping (or fighting for that matter) in well below -20°c is second nature for us up here at ~70°N. (Its easy if you know the tricks)

Well, we have really good winter training areas here in Canada. Wainwright, Gagetown, The Arctic... So unless its a part of a bigger NATO training exercise, I doubt we would ever need to utilise Norway as a place to train in Arctic Warfare. Unless it was to work with our Allies in Arctic conditions.

Not just the Royal Marines. AMF(L) was a massive organization established to give a one-two punch to anyone who attacvked a NATO country or ally in the 70's to 90's. We all got cold annually!

Thanks for the chuckle. You really put a smile on my face telling us all of the difficulties experienced at -7.6°F. Your-25°C. As an Arctic Warrior & ex Senior NCO US Army who still lives in Alaska I can tell you that temperature of yours is warm compared to the -45F+, without wind-chill, at my home this winter. I have operated in the open with my troops with wind chills below -160F. So cold you had to craddle you Peninsula in your Arctic Mittens and back up while urinating bc the urine froze on contact with the ground and that peecicle quickly rose up to you. You don't want contact. Nobody wants to lose body parts to frost bite. You really don't want me to tell you about defecating on the open Arctic in a blizzard at those temperatures. You don't need that picture in your mind..... Forever. It's all relative. Good soldiers and airman adapt. Bad ones die. Have a wonderful weekend 😀

-160f is -106c. It doesn't even go that low in Antarctica, how did you see -160f and live to tell? If you had surely that would be the lowest temperature ever recorded by mankind. Even lower than the middle of the Antarctic with wind. I don't doubt you've seen -100f, but -160f is a push!

A balmy -15 is not Arctic conditions. -40 is Arctic conditions and no one would be outside speaking to reporters in an area where if you don't keep a fuel fire going under the heavy equipment, like the diesels, the oil gets so thick in the cold that you can't start the engine and exposed skin starts to freeze in just a few minutes. So if these chaps think they are doing "Arctic" training, they are in for one hell of a disappointment if they ever get sent into the Arctic.

Jack Stephens chinook is operated by the RAF, so the crews do the same survival training as the RM.

Those who had their rank slides on show were aircrew ranks, I'm not sure what you think defines aircrew rank but they were Flight Lieutenants and Squadron Leaders which are both flying ranks in a lot of squadrons

Jack Stephens they're most likely engineers as the presenter said that both aircrew and engineers take part in the course

They're non-commissioned aircrew employed on non-pilot flying duties, in this case Loadmaster. Check the RAF careers website for more information.

Because although the new handguard with the rails is very common and fitted to most army and marine SA80s (can’t speak for navy and raf), not all do, and like anything are in limited stock. Chances are the weapons on this camp for this course aren’t seen as important enough to change just yet, so as to facilitate the regiments who are still yet to get them and need them more importantly first
