I’m telling ya’ll, I do not understand Drake’s appeal, particularly as a rapper. I understand that he’s popular when it comes to Pop music and some R&B. I get that. What I don’t understand is why Drake is even considered a good rapper. Please hear me out: first off, having a ghostwriter is a big, fat NO-NO in rap. But for some reason, everyone lets Drake get away with it and still calls him a GOAT. Maybe I’m just an old GenX OG hip-hop lover, but I will never understand this. Second, please listen to his rapping. I mean, REALLY listen! If you’re being honest, this man has one flow. If I listen to “First Person Shooter,” “Push Ups,” “Family Matters” and this latest travesty, I notice a pattern: Drake doesn’t rap. He is READING lyrics. The rapping on all his songs sounds the same! He doesn’t perform like Kendrick, Eminem and Lil Wayne do when they rap. His rapping often lacks energy; it’s repetitive and monotonous; the rapping is akin to reading a nursing rhyme where each stanza rhymes perfectly with, as some point out, like words. There’s little creativity. No real cadence other than a monotonous framing that bores the hell out of me. For all the criticisms of “being boring” leveled at Kendrick Lamar, the one who truly bores me is Drake. While “Family Matters” may be his best work, the rapping on that song bores me to no end. Drake completely loses focus when he directs his bars at other artists rather than Kendrick. I’m sorry, guys, but I will never understand the hype behind Drake. There’s not much anyone can do to convince me that he’s one of the greatest rappers of all time. OF ALL TIME? Greater than Jay-Z, Nas, Eminem? Greater than his mentor Lil Wayne? Greater than Nicki Minaj? He’s not even greater than J. Cole!
