john and Hannes outstanding job, never really knew much about the SADF involvement in this detail. I knew a South African who was PATU and was deployed to Rhodesia also around the same time. I look forward to seeing the next parts. This is an outstanding project. Being a kid in America we followed this closely in Soldier Of Fortune, I think we all dreamed about going and fighting ourselves. I know this had a great impact on me Joining the US army and eventually seeing the world to include Somalia.

Great interview, thanks both. The 'Jock' mentioned at 35:10 is in fact Henry Gow, now a Barrister in the UK. He was originally in the Paras in the UK, joined the Recces in SA and went from them into 22 SAS. His book 'Killing Zone' is very well written; he wrote it under the pseudonym 'Harry McCallion' - in it he praises Kocky du Toit as the best officer he ever met...

This guy is as genuine as they come, I will never forget my time at 4 Recce as Support Staff. Those guys are hard as stone. I will never forget the one day I had to take them equipment, and they were in the hanger next to the diving tank. They were obviously planning an operation. All that I can say is that hells bell they did a proper planning of an Op.

I want to thank Schalk Fourie for this episode and Hannes for doing a very interesting interview. I remember Felde Airfield near Hartley was a base where the South Africans deployed into Rhodesia from. C130s flew out a lot of their kit after the war ended. The part played by the Recces and Parabats was kept under wraps and one only reads about it now in relatively recent factual accounts of the external ops. There were some Germans who left South West Africa to settle in Southern Rhodesia. I knew of a few families in the Eastern Border District. One gentleman made and sold German sausages, hams, etc....he was very kind and always left people have a taste to decide :)

Thank you, Sirs - for a very interesting S.W. Africa/Namibia + Maubalahauta war stories (including PUMA 164) and Hunter airstrikes in Mozambique against Frelimo bridges + railway lines. Schalk Fourie was in the thick of things and speaks very well of his personal involvement in numerous fire fights.

Thankyou for this upload. I believe 'SW' is referring to the famous 'Green Leader' raid on Zipra "FC/Mkushi" west of Lusaka. Squadron Leader Chris Dixon led a Section of Canberras, radioed Lusaka ATC, warning them to stay out of it: "Lusaka Tower, this is Green Leader, I have a message for the Station Commander at Mumbwa, from the Rhodesian Air Force"... The Scouts had a source in Lusaka at the time, who visited the hospital on the pretext of offering to donate blood. He observed a gratifying influx of wounded terrorists

My letter to the ' Oom' may have been I did get my call up but please excuse me from service, however, I have not one day yet regretted doing my service as rear echelon with an old Portuguese diesel tanker leaking like a tea sif

Even Wiki (despite Left bias & censorship) says Hendrik Witbooi fought FOR the Germans for a while, wiping out smaller black tribes, before turning against the Germans again. Today Witbooi is held up as a national hero by the Namibian establishment, despite having murdered many black Namibians while he was in the service of Germany.
