It's all about what you're there for. Sparring should be mutually beneficial as well as positive. When I get popped, I don't get mad. I look at what I did wrong and try to learn from it. At the same time, when light sparring is what you're supposed to be doing, you don't need to go all wild on your opponent. End of the day, you're both there to build each other up and respect each other.
@Kunai-b2x2 жыл бұрын
Shane could you maybe do a video from the new person’s perspective and how to be a better sparring partner and also how to overcome some mental blocks? I started pretty recently and am still not sure how hard to go or proper “sparring etiquette” that is super obvious to people who have been doing it a while. Thank you!! Edit: mental blocks being that I feel bad about landing a clean shot and also if they start like flurry punchin me I forget my footwork and just shell up

The part about blanking out just takes some practice to get over. Stress inoculation is one of the benefits of sparring but it doesn't come right away.
@belikewater4202 жыл бұрын
I find for how hard to go, I like to start from slow, kata like strikes with a new to me partner. Not all fancy form, but just slow, steady, and like they said, perfect your form there. Try to keep the intensity low and slowly increase to match. If you start to notice your partner is getting landed on a lot, slow down. If they are pummeling you, be honest and respectfully ask them to slow the pace. Find a good flow where you both are landing lightly (really subjective with experience) but are blocking, evading, etc more often than landing. Staying light and loose in all your movements helps. Don't think hit to hurt, think move and stick. No heavy, planted explosive shots unless you are both hard sparring. Which some people don't ever do at all.

Great video, as always! Thanks for sharing this knowledge. I have that one student that always gets mad as soon as he gets hit then he goes into berserker mode. When I spar with him I often have to clinch up just so neither of us get hurt! I have a video request for you: Can you give a video for coaches/instructors giving an overview of how to divy up curriculum and training to cover all the bases? Since at my gym I try to balance traditional TKD stuff, kickboxing, and grappling it feels like there is SO MUCH to cover! So I'm just curious how you organize workouts and class structure to adequately cover everything eventually and also to balance between drilling, sparring/rolling, and teaching. I want to give my students everything they need and sometimes it feels like things can get a little scattered and out of balance. Thanks and God bless the work you're doing here!

I spar with both male and female and maintain the same light touch because for me it’s more about working out techniques and not outdoing each other. However, 8 out of 10 times you’ll find that person with a different philosophy, which can spoil the session. But you guys make a good point about not seeing red because it demonstrates a lack of control.

The arts are good at humbling a person. You may dominate with an aggressive style, but eventually a good counter fighter will make you pay for your transgressions. Likewise, the controlled fighter will learn that getting overrun is also possible, and sometimes, terrifying.

I was winning on points but suddenly got angry and started slugging trying to knock the other guy out even though I did not have to, I lost my stance and he scored a knockdown. Train to be faster with delivery. Fast twitch muscle fibers, explosive training. Also, slower styles seem to lend to counter fighting or wrestling. Let them make the move and capitalize on any mistakes or openings you find. Sometimes slower means reacting instead of initiating.

Hey Coaches! I’ve recently started out in my MMA journey and just got the green light to spar mma. I’m coming for TKD/Karate (plus I’m Southpaw) and habitually I’m having some crossover issues. Can you show some sparring and some bad habits to break when getting into MMA? My lead leg has been getting chopped due to my stance. Foot vs. Shin Using Tkd/linear footwork effectively I also treat punching like an accessory to kicking…
@ahmedalhamadi12312 жыл бұрын
I saw once Gabriel varga in video talking about his stance transition from karate to kick boxing and they were tying rope between his legs to prevent him from taking the wide karate stance.
@belikewater4202 жыл бұрын
Ahhh, the difference in kata and mma practice. I remember how hard that was. Funny that stance is everyone's first realization like "oh crap, this doesn't work here!" I got swept and leg kicked soooo many times at first because of my traditional stance. You gotta learn to shift weight better and be light. Boxing goes well with tkd in my opinion. Helps you learn a taller stance and better hand work. Then you find a middle ground MMA stance. And learning sprawls and good takedown defense to counter that wide and planted base tkd teaches you helps too.

I just started training and I find it very difficult to control my power as a large guy who hits very hard. My biggest issue is when I cut my power my speed has to dramatically drop, to the point where It doesn't even feel like I'm throwing a punch just kind of moving my arm. At this point I refuse to even hit anybody in sparring because I'm scared I'm going to hurt them if I land clean. Does anyone have any tips on how to keep your speed up without hitting too hard? Is it supposed to feel like im just moving my arm?

I think this video covers exactly what you're looking for with the kicks: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zoe9e4efm86Hjq8

When it comes to multiple kicks with lead leg, emphasize on chambering your kicks(leg extension from the knees and proper support of the rear leg/foot as well as hip rotation. On the subject of consecutive techniques, atart witb a teep to a roundhouse to the head. Once you can do so comfortably then you can add an axe kick at the end. If you're having trouble with the above then try doing multiple roundhouse kicks(center mass first) without bringing your lead leg back to the floor everytime.

So this has actually happened to me... Kinda. I was at a visit at a kickboxing gym, one of my very good friends invited me, and I was thinking about training with them. We got partnered up, and I stand acroos this dude, dead look, 25 pounds heavier. I'm no new guy to fight sports. I started karate at the age of 8. But he just didn't give a shit. I'm used to sparring as technique, and not force. And he did. I looked to the trainer, and was like "What da..."... I never came back. I don't want to train in a gym, where lack of controle and respect is acceptable. At least as I saw it. I ended the session, but never returned. I was the newbie, and he was a prick. Sad.
@newkindofviking67012 жыл бұрын
And I could not let my self go at him. Don't have that in me for sparring/Training. I could have hurt him pretty bad. My friend and I talked about it after, and maybe he was irritated, that I came in, and was a bit harder to get into. Also, they told me to have my right leg in front, but after MANY years of strict routine, I found that very hard as well.
@LLANTALOBOTOMIK2 жыл бұрын
I think you got salty because in karate you never got rocketed by a punch, which is normal in boxing. It's not like karate tho, obviously you have to punch and get punched.
@belikewater4202 жыл бұрын
Control is important, especially in practice. But also remembering that others can do what they want, especially in a street fight, is also important. Never lose your own way, but grow it such that you understand your own weaknesses and vulnerabilities inherent in your approach so that you may overcome them. A strong aggressor is weak to a better counter fighter. A strong counter fighter is weak to a more clever aggressor. Not to say you shouldn't be respectful in training, but some styles will be more forward and overpowering if you aren't prepared physically and mentally to overcome them.

Direct communication. It's not always easy or comfortable but it's within your power to say "hey, we're getting kind of wild with the strikes, let's slow the pace down a bit" Most people don't want to be jerks, they're just defaulting to bad habits under pressure
@belikewater4202 жыл бұрын
Lock ups/clinches work well on untrained spaz fighters. Take away their strength. If you like slow and technical, clinch work helps so long as you have the sensitivity for it.
