You've seen her dominate the Figure category on stage. Now get an exclusive look what it's like to compete as four-time Olympia winner Nicole Wilkins.
When Nicole Wilkins graced the stage at the 2014 Olympia, she came in as a seasoned pro. As she stood under the hot, beaming lights-eager to make history with her fourth Figure and first back-to-back Olympia win-she heard nothing. The roar of the crowd fell silent, and the audience's cheers were put on mute. For that single moment, everything came together for the returning champ. Focus was key.
"I thought, 'Walk slow, don't trip, hit your poses the way you need to hold them, make sure you're twisting enough, make sure your chest is lifted enough, make sure you're smiling,'" Nicole says. "I think you're so focused on what you're doing in that moment. Everything else is sort of silent. Even when they announce your name as the winner, it's all you hear. It's just you and the lights."
Nicole Wilkins spoke with Bodybuilding.com about what it was like to compete at the 2014 Olympia, and shared her thoughts on the role figure competition has played in her life.
TWO DAYS BEFORE FINALS
For Figure competitors-or any Olympia competitor for that matter-the competition is about presenting a perfect package on stage, even if things behind the scenes are a little more complicated. "Winning my first Olympia was amazing, but to then lose it and have the motivation to keep going after a divorce was difficult," Nicole says. "I mean, those are extreme highs and lows, but every one of those steps and every one of those moments has led up to this."
The week before the Olympia may be taxing for some but, despite the occasional bout of butterflies-to be expected when defending a title and standing in front of the world in a posing suit-Nicole says it was like the calm before the storm. "With the hard work behind me, it's just about enjoying the moment and having fun."
Part of that fun happened during the first night of the O at "Meet The Olympians," where competitors met fans and signed autographs. It was a place where the size of the crowd at your booth was a sign of your popularity and recognition in the field. "I remember the first year I was there," Nicole says. "I didn't have any line at all. I thought, 'Wouldn't it be awesome to have a line of people who actually knew who I was?'" This year, she had just that.
"It's exciting to know you have that big [of] an impact on people that you never even met before" she says. "I deal with women who've lost 100 pounds or guys who have lost 100 pounds or quit smoking, and they want to tell you about all the positive changes they've made in their life. That's when the reality sets in that you have a huge impact and affect people more than you realize."
It's a level of notoriety Nicole still hasn't gotten used to, and something she never takes for granted. "I'm always hoping people will still want to see me," she says. "I'm hoping that people want to talk to me and come up to my booth. I don't think I'll ever get to a point where I'll expect that. To me, it's very humbling. I'm just doing what I love."
"I went into this sport originally because I wanted it to help my career," she says. "As a personal trainer, I thought it would help my business. I could show people that I could get in good shape too. I still have that mindset."
Nicole won't be quitting figure competition anytime soon. "When you're number one at this, you want to stay number one," she says. "When I feel like I'm not getting that excitement anymore, that's when I'll know it's time to hang up the heels. I don't think I've necessarily reached my full potential yet. I still have room for growth."

As someone that most would judge as "successful" via societal definitions of respect of the community and wealth, I have a different perspective of this imbalance. I've always struggled with moderation. When I was younger and it was time to compete, I went harder than everyone else (never had the genetics to be elite, but the drive to compete against nba players). When it was time to study, I went harder than everyone else (went to Duke Med School). When it was time to learn finances, grow businesses, and accumulate, I was very successful...however at what cost? I tend to go 1000% towards my goal, but at the expense at everything around me. I don't even recognize what struggles other very important people around me are having and/or I am able to live in a delusional state within my head that if I achieve the goal, then the end justifies the means. My personal story is that seeking greatness via insane dedication, while deemed admirable by people from afar, does not lead to true happiness.

B Coral Being intelligent certainly helps when you plan training, food, etc., as well as study those you’re against before going out on stage to see what little details they might be missing in their poses or suit or whatever else. Being articulate may not matter here, it’s just a by-product, but I can’t think of anything competitive in which intelligence wouldn’t give you an edge.

Olivia Stewart I would like to know this as well. I am a mature woman and teach fitness classes. I am at a loss of how to get started. Or even how long it would take me to get even a quarter or one tenth of looking good enough to go on stage. Your nutrition is one of the key components, that I know, but I am into menopause and that in it self is a struggle. I am trying to beat the symptoms of menopause but some days it wins....😔. Good luck to you in your future on stage .

True. She has a subtle sadness that grounds her. It prevents her from having too much ego and even at her success level she doesnt take it for granted because she doesnt feel entitled. The humbleness of her spirit is beautiful (even though leaning sad can make the down time feel worse).

I must admit, I've always been a bit judgmental about bodybuilding competitions. Obviously it takes an incredible amount of effort to get your body looking like that, I just have a radically different aesthetic. When she said this is a beauty pageant for fitness girls, that demystified the whole thing a bit... although I imagine these women work a lot harder than your average pageant contestant. Still can't say I'm a fan of the aesthetic any more than I was previously, but I definitely have a newfound appreciation for bodybuilders after hearing how down-to-Earth Ms. Wilkins is.

@@elease03 As a matter of fact I've been involved in numerous stage productions and competitions as an actor, singer, dancer, crew member, etc. Plus years of competitive public speaking. I know how much work these things require and I never said bodybuilders are the only ones who work extremely hard. Based on my personal experience however, I believe the average bodybuilder works harder than the average pageant competitor. Just my opinion.

Im wondering why they prefer to have than dark tan on them during shows? I know it shows the muscles more, but I see her without the tan and I personally think she looks way better.

+Michael Mudgett It contrasts the muscles better making it more easy to see the cuts. It also makes everyones skin tone very similar so they can compare more easily. :)

thebeatlesrule234 thanks for interpreting and no matter what costume or spray tan you put on your ethnicity never changes- you can be milk white abs still be African or be a deep spray tan brown and still be white. My question wasn’t why she didn’t like the depth of the tan. It was why she said ‘her skin looks black’ as if looking black is a negative thing. FYI. It isn’t.

Agreed. It's getting to the point that they're taking away the femininity just to be as big as they can. Can't say I'm a fan of the look the judges are rewarding. It's just so sad, just when you think they're getting it right, as far as looks, they take two steps backwards.

Sierra688 Keep in mind she's also 30 years old.Dieting ages you and she's done so many shows.Once these women hit their 30s skin regeneration slows down and all that contest prep starts to show.Ive seen natural competitors look much older as well.Im not disputing she's not on anything but I have yet to see a female bodybuilder(natural or not) that doesn't look much older than she is.

I challenge that statement of "....there is going to be a lack of balance somewhere." Balance is the key to harmony. It is a state of peace. I do not want balance to be discarded because it is "boring". So many people already live life in an extreme and it is very damaging.

So they get rid of the Ms Olympia coz the women got too big and now The 'figure' comps are morphing into the same thing. Could all be controlled with the judges not rewarding the bigger and obviously drug enhanced performers.

I think it's true what she said at end, that if you want to be successful at something there will be lack of balance. Why during acceptance speech does she already talk about winning five. It's like she didn't exhale hit of crack yet n already wants another hit (rush of winning, talked a lot about adrenaline). Also why thank ifbb for "letting her compete" ?? I mean she won, again
