i have so much respect for ice skaters, and athletes in general. i mean all we, the public, see, are the pretty costumes and the amazingly performed routines but behind the scenes there are hours -no, scratch that, years of training that go into those skills. also it must take such a huge toll on them, not only physically ofc, but mentally as well. how many times have athletes wanted to quit bc they couldn't take the hard training, the sprained ankles and the feeling of not feeling enough/not getting any better? or when they fell way behind the classment in a championship? honestly, huge props to them. not only to the pro ones, but the beginners as well. i feel like i'm too old to start ice skating to be actually be any good at it, but i saw some comments abt teenagers wanting to start the sport and i think you totally should give yourself that chance. don't give up when things get hard! at the end, when you manage to pull that triple axel, i'm sure you'll feel accomplished and proud of yourself for keeping going at it. i believe in you, young skaters/athletes! 💪

Anniina Luukkanen same here actually. I'll be 15 next month and I really wish I started skating earlier. I love it so much but I've been training to be a tennis player since I was four. I love the sport but it's so hard because want to do both but that's not going to happen now

As they said never too late. I'm 20 and just starting lessons now. Though I probably won't be able to do anything professional, there are adult competitions anyone can get into. They don't go past any doubles, but I'm sure they'd be just as fun. Apparently it's difficult for people who start learning after puberty to land or even make triples. Unfortunate, but I'm sure if you're a natural and/or just put in more work than others you might get there.

I've fallen in love with figure skating thanks to Yuzuru Hanyu. In the past year I've learned myself how to skate, do spins, jump (not high xd), skate on one leg and skate backwards (kinda, I'm still learning xd). But I know if I want to become better I'll need professional help. But everyone around me tells me I'm to old to do it. I'm 15 (in few months 16) and I'm starting to believe theme. I've always been a shy one and now that no one is supporting me in my dream I'm even more scared to do another step.

I'm 14 and I started skating about 3 months ago. I've wanted to skate ever since I watched Yulia Lipnitskaya and Gracie Gold at the Sochi Olympics, but my family never had enough money to put me through lessons or even take me skating. But even without having ever gone skating, I still knew I'd love the sport. Even though I started 'late' I'm still gonna keep skating to be the best I can be. I won't be any of my idols, but I can still be a great skater. I hope every else who feels too old can push through that fear and do what they love cause I've learned that it is worth every hour on the ice and every almost broken tailbone

I started dancing around three years ago and I have loved it for so long. I think it’s time for something new because my passion for dance is fading and I hate that it’s not that I dint love dance it’s just the team I’m on isn’t fun anymore I will always love dance but I’m starting ice skating soon and I couldn’t be more excited. I think I’ve finally found something for me it’s dancing on ice and that’s amazing plus I like the idea of it being cold because I’m always really hot 😂 I’m 14 and I’m staying pretty late but I started dance late too so what’s stopping me. Edit- do whatever makes you happy it doesn’t matter if people tell you you won’t be successful because you are starting to “old” work hard and you can catch up to the people who have been doing it for longer it doesn’t matter if you start at 3 or 14 you can still be successful

I’m a figure skater and started when I was 6. I’m at the rink 11 hours a day 6 days a week. I personally think that this makes figure skating a fun sport with fun training but on the inside it’s harsh coach’s that make you break , drama, a lot of sweat and tears and I mean that. I’ve scacraficed my child hood for this sport and spent tons of thousands of dollars a year. This represents the pretty side of figure skating the the real one. The real one is pushing you self until; you can’t anymore push and pushing until you break.

Feel sorry to hear it… figure skate is really hard sport , is sayin one of the difficult sport in the world, and expensive sport …a lot sacrifice on it cause i have my kids that pursue the dream like u… but im not push them to spend 11 hours a day 6 days a week , they only spend 9-10 hours a week so they can do other thing like in art, music , school , horse riding anything they want to try … cause when they feel enough in one thing they still have backups and not wasting time for just one thing …and 1 thing peoples have to realize this sport is one of expensive one, even u have to pay when u want go to championship , so yes peoples with limited money have to reconsider it carefully before getting serious to this sport cause is not only u paying for coach on ice, u have to pay coach of ice, fitness training, dance training , costume, shoes, blade . If u only have average income , if ur kids not that much for it i think u should reconsider it carefully for get serious on this sport ..

One thing that I have to say about skating is that Ah- ha moment. I have been skating since i was eight. I realize that that is not the youngest age to start, but I worked my butt off. Last year I just figured out how to land an axel, and i have been pretty consistent with that lately. When I started working on freestyle 6 I had a moment where i just realized that I had gotten so much better in the past two months than I had in four years. then I started landing things and doing footwork and spins that I have never done before, and not only that, I am doing them well. so once you reach that Ah- ha moment...you finally realize why you started.

I love figure skating but sometimes I wonder whats the point? I think I started at a late age and really wish I couldve started young. I just wonder like what if Im wasting my time going out on the ice to the same rink over and over and over investing so much money into something that I may not get anything out of? What does someone who begins figure skating at the age of 28 have to look forward to considering the majority of skaters start at around 6 years old and quit at around 21? Can I still go far or have something to look forward to considering my age?
@bryanvoo48089 жыл бұрын
Then stop, why continue skating when you are expecting to get something out of it? Why go through all the trouble of the relentless training and pain if its not for the passion of learning something you love. Life is always unfair and its filled with what ifs. What are you expecting to get from skating?
@feaseyough65549 жыл бұрын
Bryan Voo Im expecting to become good and compete in competitions. I just feel like I missed out on doing that since most skaters stop skating professionally once they get into their 20s.

Fease Yough well if you are planning on competing in competitions whats stopping you? there are many older skaters that are still competing and heck they are still competiting in the olympics, i.e Brian Jourbet age 29 in the 2014 winter olympics. Being good only comes with hardwork and repetition. Being mentally strong as well as fear becomes a baricade to excel at something
@feaseyough65549 жыл бұрын
Bryan Voo Ok thanks, thats what I needed, the reassurance that I dont have unrealistic goals and expectations from what Im doing. I was never planning on quitting anytime soon because I love it to much, I sometimes just need the extra motivation and hearing about other people for extra inspiration.

+zeldaria Actually, ask anyone. Everyone in my skating rink can watch a skating competition and point out which skaters take ballet. Technique,Grace, and flexibility are all mandatory. I've taken ballet for over 10 years and judges always comment how graceful I am. If you want that gold medal, I do believe that all skaters that want to be successful have to do ballet. My coach will not coach anyone unless they take ballet three times a week. Think of Gracie Gold, Katelyn Osmond, Dorothy Hamill, all of the Olympic skaters! Do you really think that they got where they were by just doing on ice training!?

Dedication, discipline, perseverance, persistence, belief, passion, hard work, no fear of failures...these are all part of success within any type of purpose and mission. But the joy of true success comes with high cost and ultimate sacrifices. And I’m not talking about money...though that is also necessary, it’s only the commodity. And the purpose for which we do things is far more important than money and whatever it is we do in life. If God is not The Core of our passions and purposes, then we are losers even if we achieve success and gold medals! Do you really think order, discipline, dedication, perseverance, belief, passion, courage, and all good character attributes come from ourselves??? There’s an emptiness that follows success without serving God’s purposes. Something many come to realize and accept and many come to reject and deny.

Im quite concerned that im considered older, i would be the only one in the group classes to be older but yet only starting on basics. I would have to attend classes alone since i dont have friends with the same passion as me and classes are pretty pricey too. Should i just do it to try?
@SummertimeSadnessChannel4 жыл бұрын
If you think you would enjoy it, you should definitely try it! There are a lot of skaters who start learning at an older age, so don't let that stop you. 15 is not too old to start learning especially if you love it. I came back to skating at age 22 after taking a 14 year break (which is like starting over completely). There is nothing quite like the feeling you get when you are on the ice, no matter what level you are. I encourage you to start with the group classes, even if you are older. Also, don't worry about not having friends with the same passion as you since figure skating is really an individual sport/hobby at heart. It's just about you and the ice and that's the beauty of it! Good luck and I hope you get to do what you are passionate about. Love - SummertimeSadness

Don't rush, Find your center, feel it!!, really enjoy the moment, love the edges your are spinning on, make it feel like eating chocolate. When you spin Say to yourself. "I am in control here". Let it come from your heart :-)

Myly Lu spread your toes in your skate to create a more stable base over your blade. Don't curl your toes - it pitches you forward. If you draw a circle, and cut into 4, then imagine you start your spiralling edge entry from the top of the circle, don't hook (3turn) until you get to the 3/4 mark (the last quarter), this will help you centre the spin. Keep everything tense (except those toes!!), and wait a revolution or two until you pull in. This will help you find your centre.

take your time, dont rush before going into it. Be confident. Practice lots of back spins and jumps with back spins. bike riding up hill is great training.

Maki_Hercules_Trissa_Benji make sure you are in a checked position with your skating side leading into the jump. Focus your balance to centre front of your blade then rock forward as the free leg comes through. Don't start to jump up until the free leg is past the front of the hip. NEVER jump with your shoulders squared off over your knee (unchecked). For me, my left shoulder stays forward, until I'm rotating in the air. My right shoulder should never be facing the direction I'm jumping (it's the caboose, my left shoulder and hip are the engine). You'll hit a sideways karate kick position if you follow through with the free leg (think about jumping sideways over a wall). Once in the air, lock up your legs, force your landing leg down, and bring everything over to the landing side (weight transfer). This should, with practice, translate into a beautiful, controlled axle.

If you work really hard and ice skate everyday. Also if you take ballet classes it really helps on the ice and it also make you look more graceful I started ice skating when I was 12 and I'm currently in preliminary, I'm 16 now, I only ice skate 2 hours a week though.

I started skating when I was 12 and self taught for 6 yrs before I got lessons and competed. There are many levels of competition. I love skating and its the greatest sport of all. There is something for everyone and you never stop learning. Do skating because you truly love it.

I started when I was 7 and I'm a junior champ! I'm 11 right now, and btw you don't have to take ballet. By the way it's a very expensive sport. You have to practice very often too

@SummertimeSadnessChannel6 жыл бұрын
Never too late! I personally started at age 21 and I know many girls who started at 24/25/26. It takes a lot more work at first because your body works differently when you start older, but a good mix of work ethic, determination, and passion more than makes up for it. If if is something you love, go for it!
