Crinicle stated that the treble seems broken. That may be what you picked up regarding the tonality. And then other reviewers absolutely love them so it may just be ear anatomy and hearing that makes the difference. Thank you for the review

I would think if it sounded like the extremes/peaks are all rolled off they would make very good IEMs for popular music, especially those from the 80/90s, since most are plagued with subpar recording quality which sounds rough and edgy. But I truly understand what you meant when you say they 'lack soul' as that is a very real deal-breaker. The ikko OH10s would probably be a safer bet over the FH3 at a similar price point. You are truly an honest audiophile and i really appreciate and value that for my decision making when buying headfi.

That's how I felt about the Moondrop Starfields, and now I always use the FH3's. Maybe I live in opposite world, and have opposite ears. Maybe it's because they sound like a refreshing change of pace after having DT 770 Pro's clamped to my head for part of the day. Either way, it's always interesting to hear all the different experiences with equipment, and pairings. So many factors to take into account that every purchase is like unraveling a new mystery, no matter how much information you gathered ahead of time.

Agree with you. Fh3 is really good sounding iems and best for me in their price so dont know what reviewer heard and with what source and tips but i see ears we all have completely different and this is normal. Happy to use and hear fh3.

I have one of these and dig them. Nice bass extension. I still think my preferred IEM in this range is either the Legacy 3 or Moondrop Kanas Pro [haven't heard the Starfield]. Good review, as always sir. Cheers!

The Starfield is a more mellow and laid back listening experience with a treble that never steps out of line. The FH3 are more engaging and exciting with a more impactful bass with more treble presence. Neither is better than the other but I reach for the FH3 more often.

Hi Dave, a big thank you for your very honest review of FH3. So you don't want to use the FH3. Would you say the same for Starfield ? I feel that the starfield is rather soft on the bass but do well in the mids and treble. So if the FH3 is not for you which alternative will suit you in the same price range ? i get that feeling when i use most tips on these; occasionally some odd disjointed sounding thing going on and sometimes just boring. but I love them when i use tips around ~4 or 4.5mm bore (kz starline, spinfit 145)

Interesting . I didnt care for silicone tips at all on the FH3, added sheen and glare or made them as tou say made them boring. Foams didn't add the weird glare or sheen but a lot made them very boring. A very tip sensitive IEM for sure.

Tin Hifi T3 has morr natural and realistic tone and timbre and is more energetic and engaging. The Aria is more fun, more note weight but has a bit of pesky upper mids and lower treble. I'd pick the T3 over the FH3 and the FH3 over the Aria.

@@TheHonestAudiophile Understandable as I have certain criteria for any headphone for me to really like it. I have the Focal Elegia for example which is an amazing headphone in so many areas however the bass energy could be increased for my tastes. So I’m still deciding if they’re something I want to keep. With the FH3 I feel it’s a significant step up from the EA3 and EA1. I’m not sure if it’s fair to compare them considering the price gap but they’re from the same company so I feel it’s warranted.

David, I’ve watched a lot of your videos and I know you praise the JA EA1 and Tin T2 Plus as best budget iems. Which budget IEMs you suggest for a person that wants neutral sound signature, natural sound (good timbre) and a decent amount of detail? Price up to 50-60$. I only ask because I can’t remember all the details from so many reviews. Also thanks for posting well structured reviews that are not adverts but instead actual honest conclusions and opinions. Edit: Reasoning for me wanting neutral sound profile is because I worry that a V shaped sound might drown out the vocals and I do want to hear intimacy in the vocals.

The FH3s come with pretty much the same accessories as the FH5 and FA7 models. Apparently, the FH3 stock cable is of lower quality than the stock cable found on the more expensive models (I own the FA7s.) Clamshell storage is probably the exact same one found on most Fiio IEMs which isn't surprising given the fact that the FH1s and FD1 come with a very nice storage case that puts most budget IEM storage cases to shame. At around 140ish US dollars, the FH3 looks to be a nice starter IEM that does a lot right at a relatively low price point. The accessory kit is definitely top tier at the sub $150 price point, I don't think most other IEMs that compete in the same price bracket offer a better accessory kit. The only one that comes to mind is the Meizu Live which is an obscure IEM that surprisingly went under the radar when it came out back in 2018.

They do everything right is enough for me! Emotions are personal and I fully understand what you say about how these grab you, David. After having these for three months my conclusion is that foam tips are not good for these - foam tips are taming the highs of these. Black silicon tips from the package are best for me since make bass more punchy, keep the resolution and clarity and do not tame the highs - again, this is my experience. Otherwise I can say the Voyager 3 is more fun and emotion for me; and FH3 have other advantages.

It's OK if you don't like the FH3's. I understand it's your own opinion. However, I have the FHS1's and the FH3's and you're right about how they compare to each other. And the FH3's are perhaps the best IEM's for the money. To my ears, I don't detect a lack of timbre or dynamics. It's very dynamic and almost three-dimensional yet it doesn't add or subtract anything from the sound. Having said that, I understand that this is just my opinion. For what you get at its price point, I can't imagine a set IEM's that get nearly everything right. For those who are curious about the FH3s, go ahead and take the plunge. It's worth it and you will enjoy how they sound.

I tried to pinpoint what I don't enjoy about them given the good FR and seemless driver integration. So, I've had a similar experience to you but after your review (thanks!), I'm still not really closer to finding the words to describe it. Also, I agree on the silicon tips being off-trebly--I exclusively use foam tips on them. That said, on the hip dac they sound surprisingly enjoyable, timbre becomes much more natural plus the beryllium driver seems to take eq very well. Not overwhelming, but I have no regrets for the price...What's your choice of IEM at the moment in this "affordable" ballpark 100-250$?

Weight and comfort. Check. Fh3 L shape... Loving it. Ikko oh10... W shape... Could be great for some... Wierd on others by lacking uniformity like a piano run left to right sounding out of wack instead of linear.. Starfields.. Safe harmon tuning ... Possibly leaving me wanting more?.. Legacy 3...far varying sound profile bc of quality control producing different sounding sets... Gamble for the win or endure long return... Sounds like a potential headache. I went with fh3s

Leaving aside the technicalities and going into just loving the music I hear, my Starfields, like FH3, is warm and pleasant. What I only noticed in the Starfields is that it seems the bass lacks a bit of detail for me though that is not a drawback for me since it delivers every music I listen with it quite well and enjoyable. Somehow, FH3 hits all the right nerves for my taste from bass to treble. It makes every music I listen to relaxing and enjoyable. My basic goal though when buying an IEM is to enjoy my music and not be bitter scrutinizing every single missing, almost unnoticeable, detail in the sound it produces. Sound is indeed subjective, the FH3 fits very well to my taste. The only time I go "audiophile mode" is when I edit music. Apart from that, why be one?

i'm looking for a pair of IEMs to use mainly with a digital piano. which do you recommend in the price range of around $100-200 ? i was considering the er2xr then realized there's no way i can handle the ergonomics. I was thinking of getting the Fiio FH3 or meybe the Ikko OH10 but having second thoughts if one will actually sound great with piano/rhodes specifically.. is there a better alternative with good imaging, detail and a wide soundstage that still has nice bass, though puts more focus on the midrange while not having sharp/sibilant trebble? (I legit feel quite uncomfortable every time playing higher notes on my piano (a pretty high quality Yamaha Clavinova). For an idea, some musicians i listen to regularly: Vulfpeck, Scary Pockets, Rudy Mancuso, FKJ, Hollow Coves, DOMI & JD Beck, piano covers and bass covers...

The foam tips aren't great, they make the sound dull. I would recommend you to pair these with jvc spiral dots. They will preserve the upper treble and remove that edginess from the sound. You could also change to your silicon tips and pairing the IEM with a warmer source, your iPhone dongle would do, give it a shot!

I ordered the fh3s. Have spinfits and dekoni foams.. But also ordered ludoz foams. Will report back with feedback. I prefer spinfits over foam isolation so I might be biased away from foams but I'll try to be subjective and give them an honest shot.

Very big disappointment. Maybe my set was faulty i dont know but. Annoying treble. Ks ks ks. Insane ammount in every track. Terrible. Mids are BA clean, sharp not grainy, very small, thin and rigid, no signs of lushness or smootness. Lifeless to me. Nothing enjoyable here just BA clarity. Coherency is good. Bass really fast, not basshead amount. But somehow not dense, its foggy or airy. Hard to descibe. I find it no one time to be good during 50 tracks. There is hybrids with more warm and smooth mids and with much precise treble. (to be honest i used one red tips on it, but it was enough). Its jus not good to listening. Again maybe my set was faulty because I read reviews and they said its a very good set..

I regret of buying these iems... didn't sound good at all... too dry sound. ROC INDY IV ARE FAR BETTER AND THEY'RE CHEAPER. I DON'T GET THE HYPE FOR 'EM.

The FH3 is my least favorite IEM. Wish I never bought them. Haven't tried the bass tips yet. Maybe that would help. They just sound too sweet - like too much sugar. They actually bother me. Too much sugar. Please let the bass tips work. Using the Spinfit CP100 and that's not doing it.
